Mad House - Congress needs an intervention
OpinionJournal.com ^ | August 6, 2007 | John Fund

The House of Representatives almost turned into the Fight Club Thursday night, when Democrats ruled that a GOP motion had failed even though, when the gavel fell, the electronic score board showed it winning 215-213 along with the word FINAL. The presiding officer, Rep. Mike McNulty (D., N.Y.), actually spoke over the clerk who was trying to announce the result.

In the ensuing confusion several members changed their votes and the GOP measure to deny illegal aliens benefits such as food stamps then trailed 212-216. Boiling-mad Republicans stormed off the floor. The next day, their fury increased when they learned electronic records of the vote had disappeared from the House's voting system.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi made matters worse when she told reporters, "There was no mistake made last night." Majority Leader Steny Hoyer had to rescue her by acknowledging that, while he thought no wrongdoing had occurred, the minority party was "understandably angry." Under pressure, the House unanimously agreed to create a select committee, with subpoena powers, to investigate Republican charges the vote had been "stolen."

Speaker Nancy Pelosi made matters worse when she told reporters, "There was no mistake made last night."

The mistake was made last November, when this absolute brain-dead moron's party became the majority party, and elected this absolute brain-dead moron as the speaker. The fact that she is two heartbeats from the presidency is truly a nightmare. Pray for the continued good health of Pres. Bush and VP Cheney.

Stolen election. Votes don’t matter. Where is the outrage from the tyrannical Left?

They don’t care about democracy, as long as they get their way.

Democrats never let actual democracy interfere with their plans.

Pelosi and Reid lowest rated Congress of all time. Both have lower approval ratings than GW. The do nothing surrender Congress is being watched by middle America and according to their ratings, they do not like what they see. Congress will flip back to the republicans in 2008.

1000% bluster! The RATS don't give a sheit about this damned committee. They stole the vote and got away with it. That's all they care about. The rest is just for show.

Anybody else think FR is running kinda slow today?

Ah but, there were many on FR who said that would be a good thing, but what the hey, their animus against mostly Christian people from south of the border lining up and risking their life to take jobs such as cleaning toilets, overtook political logic, all I can say, is welcome to the world you created.

The biggest problem with the Democrats in Congress: they’re too beholden to the MoveOn.org/Michael Moore crowd, and it’s really starting to grate on too many mainstream Democrats.

Funny you should mention it, but all week FR’s been slow for me and I’m on Dial-up. Tonight it’s working very well for a change. Go figure.

ROTFLOL!!! It was great!! I’d love to see more of it. It’s about time the repubs got passionate about something.

Now .. if we can just get that passion channeled toward securing the border.

I say give every one of these career politicians the boot ... and good. Vote the whole lot out and start over. Get someone in there that wants to do good for the Republic and not for themselves. Out I say.

Voted out the door just isn’t harsh enough. The punishment has to fit the crime. This was not a coup attempt to take over the legislative branch, but it could sure be used as a test for one. They got caught and the smoking gun vote was ditched. All the Lib constitutional holier than thou guardians are absolutely silent, and they need to be called on it. If there is no consequences it will be tried again. Giving them a year to experiment with it isn’t acceptable.

No, what Congress needs is a defective fire alarm and sprinkler system and about a dozen sloppy 4 pack a day smokers wandering around.

Funny how border security is a winning issue for Republicans right now. How do you explain that one?

saganite: >>Funny how border security is a winning issue for Republicans right now. How do you explain that one?<<

I believe that Dane is misrepresenting the 2006 elections. For example, Some voters probably voted for or against JD Hayworth because of immigration, but what really got him voted out was Abramoff money and the related scandals.

I think it is a gross oversimplification to say that border security is either a winning or losing issue for 2008. If we do not support good border security candidates, by contributions of money and hard work, you can bet that La Raza and others are working to get Hillary, and an even worse congress than we have now, into office.

I would like to believe that voters will look at the sleazy moves the Dems and RINOS have made WRT illegals and will automatically throw them out, but really I think 2008 will belong to whoever wants it the most and is willing to work for it.

It may prove to be the case. After all, if things continue the way they have been, and the dimwits get tossed out in '08, there are two things that may have been accomplished by the '06 election:

1. The Repubs got the message from the electorate that selling out their principles and becoming too cloistered in Washington wasn't going to fly. Granted, the recent debacle on immigration reform shows that there are lots of RINOs left in the Senate that need to go, pronto.

2. The people have been given the opportunity to see what having the dimwits in control of Congress looks like (a complete fiasco), since many seem to have forgotten that over the past 12 years of Republican majorities.

Please list all of the accomplishments of this Congress. Define that as all the bills that have become law, either through Presidential signature, or over-ridden veto, after passage by both houses.

Hint: You only need a small sheet of paper. And if you cull the list to show only substantive bills, only a very small piece of paper, if that.

I should think such a situation under Madame Pelosi is not unexpected. Sadly, it makes that branch of our government look as unstable as our dollar.
