China: Wrong drug combination may be behind S. Korean diplomat's death (killed by a quack)

Wrong drug combination may be behind S. Korean diplomat's death

(Kyodo) _ A mistake in the administration of intravenous drugs by a Beijing clinic may have been behind last week's death of a senior diplomat at the South Korean Embassy in the Chinese capital, a source informed about the incident said Monday.

Whang Joung Il, 52-year-old minister for political affairs, died July 29 after receiving intravenous solutions at the clinic he visited for treatment of abdominal pain.

As part of his treatment, Whang received Ringer's solution and an antibiotic that should not be administered simultaneously with calcium-containing solutions, according to the source. Ringer's solution contains calcium.

A written instruction for the antibiotic used in the procedure, obtained by Kyodo News says, "Do not use diluents containing calcium, such as Ringer's solution" with the drug as "particulate formation can result."

The possibility of the clinic's improper use of the drugs emerged as a cause of the minister's death after an investigation into the incident by the South Korean Embassy found that numerous blood clots were discovered in the minister's body.

The clinic has yet to formally inform the embassy about the reasons behind the minister's death, and has not offered an apology over the incident, according to the source.

The Chinese authorities, which are also investigating the incident, have yet to issue a formal report, the source said.

The South Korean Embassy has issued a notice on its website warning South Koreans in China not to visit the clinic in central Beijing, which caters mainly to foreign expatriates, for any kind of treatment.

Whang visited the clinic after falling ill eating a sandwich.

The antibiotic in question is Rocephin, which can be used to fight 'abdominal infections,' according to local media in S. Korea.

These guys are on a roll, as if the recent string of food and drug safety problems were not enough. I guess it is true that, when it rains, it pours.

I suspect that this clinic is one of the first class medical facility available in Beijing. If we cannot trust such a clinic, I feel that going to hospital in China is like playing a Russian roulette.

Wonder what was in that sandwich. First, the food poisons you, then the hospital kills you with blatant malpractice, and there is no one to sue in that God-forsaken country.
Were I a network sportscaster required to go to the Beijing Olympics, I would take every bit of food and drink with me and eat nothing prepared locally.

I just read an article about one such reporter who does that very thing. He lives there on assignment, but orders his food from outside the country as much as possible.

If I can find it, I'll post a link.

Actually this interaction is a recent discovery of just a couple of months old. The Rocephin (ceftriaxone) is highly protein bound. The Lactated Ringers has calcium that is divalent. Since the calcium is divalent it can bind to more than one complex of protein bound ceftriaxone. The result is what is called biliary sludge. It literally stops up the liver with sludge. This phenomenon is not as of yet completely understood. We have calcium in our blood stream and this does not happen unless extra calcium is introduced into the body. I would suspect there is a critical level of free unbound calcium that is necessary for this to happen.

This will usually resolve when the ceftriaxone is stopped.

It is quite likely that the sandwich’s expiration date has passed or it has some stuffs which shouldn’t be part of food(lye-soaked cardboard?)

Were I a network sportscaster, I would send a remote-controlled camera, and stay in the US

I remember a HS Chemisrty lab experiment where some solution was saturated slowly drop by drop with a certain compound. at he point of saturation, further drops of the compound would immediately solidify out some solid matter. I have no idea what the chemicals were, but I remember the result. The drugs used here must do the same thing, but with fatal effect.......

Reminds me of a painting of some shipwrecked sailors in a lifeboat off of the Amazon River. The title was “ They Had But to Dip Their Buckets” referring to fresh water from the Amazon floating on top of the salt water many miles out to sea.

They had but to READ THE LABEL.

Had some doctor in the US almost stop my daughters heart because somebody didn't read the contraindications on the label.

Who knows with China.

It could just as easily have been fake or contaminated medical products. Chinese “authorities” would happily blame the doctor for a “mistake” instead of scare everyone that there medical supplies are substandard. They have no problem sacrificing individuals to save face.
