Ron Paul: The Internet's favorite candidate

By Declan McCullagh

Story last modified Mon Aug 06 06:16:00 PDT 2007

ARLINGTON, Va.--Ron Paul is a Republican congressman and U.S. presidential hopeful who, in the usual shorthand of political journalists, is known as a "long shot" for the White House.

Paul's poll numbers award him less than 2 percent of the vote among Republican candidates, and he was unceremoniously excluded from an Iowa debate in June organized by a tax watchdog group that happens to share his political views. Even otherwise flattering articles consign his candidacy to "the realm of dreams, not practical politics."

On the Internet, however, this courtly Texas obstetrician-turned-politician has developed a towering presence that has left his Democratic and Republican rivals largely in his shadow.

He revels in the fact that “young people” share his views. That is, he is proud of the fact that immature voters will support him. What does this say about his positions?

Libertarianism is a dangerous form of idealism and utopianism.

Unfortunately the only questions RP is asked in the GOP debates is about the WOT in general and the battle in Iraq in particular. ....his weakness. His strong suits are completely ignored — the role of gov’t, the welfare state, taxes, etc. ....issues that many would like to see discussed at length.

Putting the label ‘liberal’ on RP is silly.

Gun rights, state rights, private property rights, US out of the UN, getting rid of the IRS and Social Security are real ‘liberal’ ideas.

He he. My favorite argument over the weekend was when I was called a liar for saying 5 people contributed 33% of the $14,000 in military contributions received by RP (in the thread discussing RP's superior support in the military). It turns out that RP actually got $22,000 in military contributions, which meant those 5 people gave 25% of Ron Paul's military contributions. Apparently, the difference of 15 military people (5*3 for 33%) versus 20 military people (5*4 for 25%) donating to Ron Paul was significant. I guess with poll numbers like RP's, 5 votes is real important.

Hey I'll agree with you there but that's what all the candidates face. Rudy - on abortion, Mitt - on flip-flop and being a Mormon, McCain - how can you be our maverick if you still support the war? etc, etc. Ron Paul really does need to figure out how to handle potential threats who don't wear uniforms and don't hail from a declared countries (but hide in many countries). If the only answer is to wait until they come over the top, he's going to take some grief from GOP voters who are a little more active than passive.

"U.S. foreign policy" has nothing whatsoever to do with the creation of Islamic nutjobs, despite the ignorant ravings to the contrary by Democrats and isolationists. Those who think that Islamics would turn away from extremism if the U.S. disengaged militarily are naive beyond description. Islamopsychosis is created from within their depraved culture, not from without. And it's stoked by leaders such as those in the House of Saud whose aim is to divert the attention of the angry masses onto external enemies (such as Israel and the U.S.) and away from the corruption and abuses at home.

Amazing that FReepers will bash someone & call him names just because he favors a different course of action in Iraq. Though I don't agree with Paul on an immediate pull-out, there shouldn't be any long-term committment either, and we sure in the Hell shouldn't be giving Saudi Arabia $20 billion in arms sales and trying to shove some stupid peace agreement to a region that's been in chaos since biblical times.

The GOP & conservatives better court Paul instead of trashing him, because Paul can easily run as a 3rd party candidate and throw the election to Hillary.

There have been many posts by non-military who make your assertion, but only a couple of veterans and I can not remember any active duty who support cut and run. On the other hand there have been many active duty, and honorably discharged veterans who disagree with your assertion completely.

Seriously, the neocons around here seem to hate a true conservative even more than they hated Clinton. Clearly they hate Dr. Paul more than they hate Hillary Clinton since she'll probably win the General if they nominate another big-government neocon globalist.

...and that is why you fail. Conservatism is the domain of self-responsibility. Nobody creates terrorist...they make a choice (for whatever reason) to become terrorists.

If having military bases in a foreign land creates terrorists, we’d have problems in Japan, Germany, and every other freaking country with an american base.

“Young people” are the voting base of the future. The geezers won’t be around forever.

It's not just young people who are flocking to Paul. You got folks who never paid attention to politics before until Paul arrived, and the folks who always voted 3rd party. The least the GOP can do is let Paul speak at the convention and co-opt a couple of his issues, such as letting states legalize marijuana & no long-term committment in Iraq.

But the Stupid Party and their groupie supporters want to trash Paul instead of reaching out to him. Yeah, that's real smart, trash the guy who has stood up for the Constitution all his life, which will turn off the very folks I mentioned and then the GOP & their locksteppers will piss and moan when these folks won't vote for the GOP nominee.
