Ron Paul: The Internet's favorite candidate
By Declan McCullagh
Story last modified Mon Aug 06 06:16:00 PDT 2007
ARLINGTON, Va.--Ron Paul is a Republican congressman and U.S. presidential hopeful who, in the usual shorthand of political journalists, is known as a "long shot" for the White House.
Paul's poll numbers award him less than 2 percent of the vote among Republican candidates, and he was unceremoniously excluded from an Iowa debate in June organized by a tax watchdog group that happens to share his political views. Even otherwise flattering articles consign his candidacy to "the realm of dreams, not practical politics."
On the Internet, however, this courtly Texas obstetrician-turned-politician has developed a towering presence that has left his Democratic and Republican rivals largely in his shadow.

He’s right about everything but Islamic extremists, but I can forgive him one err. He’s the best shot we have for saving the Constitution.
I vote with my head, thanks.
Ping before the polite, reasoned discourse starts. :)
Countdown to punch graphic in five . . . four . . . three . . .
Unfortunately, he picked a huge issue to be wrong on.
He sure is. Just like he’s the candidate most supported by the military (if by “most” you mean 22 self-identified military contributors gave money to him).
I think he understands Islamic extremism better than any other candidate. Don’t create more of them.
Oh good. The usual Ron Paul arguments. I miss the days of a few months back where we had the usual Rudy arguments. But that was...uh...taken care of. Now we can have the Ron Paul arguments. ;-)
He revels in the fact that “young people” share his views. That is, he is proud of the fact that immature voters will support him. What does this say about his positions?
Libertarianism is a dangerous form of idealism and utopianism.
Well, he also wants to legalize drugs...
Unfortunately the only questions RP is asked in the GOP debates is about the WOT in general and the battle in Iraq in particular. ....his weakness. His strong suits are completely ignored — the role of gov’t, the welfare state, taxes, etc. ....issues that many would like to see discussed at length.
“Young people” are the voting base of the future. The geezers won’t be around forever.
My heart is a bit higher up in my body...:)
He is indeed the most supported candidate among those military employees.
Any “True Conservative”* knows that.

In my heart I know he’s a whack-job and you’re delusional.
Are you saying we are creating them?
Putting the label ‘liberal’ on RP is silly.
Gun rights, state rights, private property rights, US out of the UN, getting rid of the IRS and Social Security are real ‘liberal’ ideas.
Yes, that’s waht they are saying...
You sound like a real intellectual

Well gentlemen, I find such action troubling. I believe we ourselves have created this unbearable situation. If perhaps we had produced more goods King George would be more inclined to acquiesce to our needs. Indeed the whole Boston tea party fiasco did nothing to endear us to his majesty. Maybe as a better response to the tax, we should have reduced our tea usage, I also
Mr. Jefferson!
Yes Mr. Adams?
Your cane please!
‘Ron Paul: The Internet’s favorite candidate ‘
(chuckle)
See Howard Dean circa 2003.
240 volts, but with two breakers out...
Hey I'll agree with you there but that's what all the candidates face. Rudy - on abortion, Mitt - on flip-flop and being a Mormon, McCain - how can you be our maverick if you still support the war? etc, etc. Ron Paul really does need to figure out how to handle potential threats who don't wear uniforms and don't hail from a declared countries (but hide in many countries). If the only answer is to wait until they come over the top, he's going to take some grief from GOP voters who are a little more active than passive.
"U.S. foreign policy" has nothing whatsoever to do with the creation of Islamic nutjobs, despite the ignorant ravings to the contrary by Democrats and isolationists. Those who think that Islamics would turn away from extremism if the U.S. disengaged militarily are naive beyond description. Islamopsychosis is created from within their depraved culture, not from without. And it's stoked by leaders such as those in the House of Saud whose aim is to divert the attention of the angry masses onto external enemies (such as Israel and the U.S.) and away from the corruption and abuses at home.
Of course, but a large portion of them will have different views in the future, when they are out of college for awhile and in the real world.
That’d be bad news. Constitutionalism is underrepresented in public discourse and policy-making.
Do you always answer questions with a thread?
Then our withdrawal from Lebanon and Somalia should have solved the problem... yet we had 9/11 after both of these actions.
Read it again. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you know that there is a difference between the terms “libertarian” and “liberal”.
Thanks!
The GOP & conservatives better court Paul instead of trashing him, because Paul can easily run as a 3rd party candidate and throw the election to Hillary.

The Paulbearer Moonbattery Factor for this Thread HAS BEEN ELEVATED to
RASPBERRY
THIS IS NOT A DRILL
You nailed that one on the head. Mohammad and his band of thugs started spreading their particular brand of nastiness long before we were ever around.
LOL... The craziest thing about the Wyler's graphic is that it's always posted by one of the biggest neocon-koolaid drinkers on the site.
Seriously, the neocons around here seem to hate a true conservative even more than they hated Clinton. Clearly they hate Dr. Paul more than they hate Hillary Clinton since she'll probably win the General if they nominate another big-government neocon globalist.
“I think he understands Islamic extremism better than any other candidate. Dont create more of them”
...and that is why you fail. Conservatism is the domain of self-responsibility. Nobody creates terrorist...they make a choice (for whatever reason) to become terrorists.
If having military bases in a foreign land creates terrorists, we’d have problems in Japan, Germany, and every other freaking country with an american base.
Are you sure “True Conservative” etc is a trademark or is it a copyright?
I could be wrong, but I believe ejonesie22 was making fun of the RP supporters in the thread over the weekend. There was a long discussion of RP’s superior military support, until someone counted 22 “military” contributors for RP.

It's not just young people who are flocking to Paul. You got folks who never paid attention to politics before until Paul arrived, and the folks who always voted 3rd party. The least the GOP can do is let Paul speak at the convention and co-opt a couple of his issues, such as letting states legalize marijuana & no long-term committment in Iraq.
But the Stupid Party and their groupie supporters want to trash Paul instead of reaching out to him. Yeah, that's real smart, trash the guy who has stood up for the Constitution all his life, which will turn off the very folks I mentioned and then the GOP & their locksteppers will piss and moan when these folks won't vote for the GOP nominee.
And Howard Dean is now Chairman of the Democrat Party. Plus the internet has come a long way in 3yrs.
He's supported by my active duty Navy Corpsman wife and me (a Navy Reserves Avionics Technician). He has pretty strong support among our shipmates, and that support continues to grow daily.
I’ll have to check with legal. They are on bunker duty this morning...
