NC poll: [Fred]Thompson leads GOP hopefuls

RALEIGH -- Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson is the most popular GOP candidate for 2008 in North Carolina, a state that historically votes for Republicans in the presidential race. That's according to the Public Policy Polling's latest primary tracking poll.

Meanwhile, North Carolina-native John Edwards and Sen. Hillary Clinton are tied at the top of the Democratic presidential field.

No candidate has a clear majority of support though. Thompson, while leading all Republicans in the state, garnered just 30 percent of the vote. Edwards and Sen. Clinton were tied at 29 percent, while Sen. Barack Obama was third with 23 percent.

In the race for North Carolina governor, the poll found that current Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue extended her lead among Democrats while Bill Graham is heading up the Republican challengers.

Gee, it seems like not declaring his candidacy sure is hurting Fred Thompson. Maybe he should just bow out now before things get worse (like winning the nomination and the election). LOL

Yeah, yeah, but have you seen how Ron Paul is roaring ahead in terms of contributions from people with the letter “X” in their middle name, huh, HUH?!?!?! :P

LOL!

Well, they have a lot more in common with "Cut-and-Run" than any Republican *I* know.

BTW, the other day I met and spoke with a soldier who's recently back from Iraq. All I want to say about that--other than that it was an honor, as I've never served and he was over there for more than a YEAR--is that he is not a political person but is disgusted with the dems and with those who want us to leave before the job is done. This man was up on the very major problems in the Iraq government, so he's not all sunshine and rainbows, but his observations boiled down to "The media don't know what the **** they're talking about."

Question 1 of the poll from the .pdf: There will be a number of people running for president in 2008 as Republicans. Some of the most talked about are Rudy Guilliani, John McCain, Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson. If the Republican primary were held today, which one of these men would you vote for, or would you vote for someone else? To Vote for Rudy press 1. To vote for McCain press 2. To vote for Romney press 3. To vote for Thompson press 4. If you would vote for another candidate press 5. If you are undecided press 6.

If the election were held today, Thompson would not be a choice nor would there be a choice for “other” or undecided.

This is it what polls are, but none of this is put out front in articles most of the time, nor do they state how many didn’t want to participate nor how many they had to call to get 500-600 people to do so, who “said” they were likely Republican voters. “Some of the most talked about are”, well I suppose the idiocy of that quote speaks for itself, heh. I am not singling this poll out to malign it. I suppose it has as much worth or credibility as any of the rest, which is none.

Polls are at best tools of the media to guide the electorate and self-fulfilling prophecy, but only if we allow ourselves to be manipulated by them in giving them validity.

Since the NC house is on the verge of giving our Electoral Votes away to the winner of the national popular vote, along with the senate and governor, what good is a pole result in a state that doesn’t matter?

Uh huh...

And if Hunter had won this would be a great moment for the campaign...

The Thompson is not a candidate line is reaching using Hitler in an argument levels.

It’s reaching using Hitler? No, what it is, is a fact. The poll asked the question, “if the election were today”. I pointed out the facts involved in an election held today. What part of that are you not understanding? I didn’t realize I was making any argument other than the absurdity of polls. If Hunter won what? This isn’t winning anything, is my point. Hunter did “win” some of the earlier polls and as I recall beat McCain in Arizona. So find where I was extolling that poll or any other and get back to me. Polls are a deceptive stain on the election process and ultimately our country.

I realize that. My comment has to do with North Carolina's value to any presidential election.

but his observations boiled down to "The media don't know what the **** they're talking about."

Oh I think the media know very well what they're talking about. But what they want is the US outta Iraq and Republicans outta the White House and Congress, so they're using the typical American's short attention span and very limited patience with foreign military ventures to achieve that end.

Hey, it worked like the proverbial charm with the Vietnam war, so who can blame them for trying it again? If we pull out of Iraq prematurely and it devolves into a major stronghold and training base for Islamo-fascist terrorism, I will blame the typical impatient, short-sighted, uninformed American voter as much as I do the devious liberal liars and obfuscators.

Fred leads in all of the state polls that I have seen in the South. Rudy leads national. Concludes me to believe that Fred is just to Southern fried to win in November ‘08.

Why doesn’t Thompson just declare his candidacy?...instead of all the pussy-footing around? Is there some unseen advantage at this time to being undeclared? A large segment of Republicans want him to run; He seems to want to run; God knows the Country needs him to run. Why all the indecision? Makes him look weak and indecisive, IMO.

He doesn’t declare because it is AUGUST and no one does anything in August if they want to get noticed. Tim Russert is reporting Thompson will announce on Sept. 5th.

I am equating the use of Fred’s “Candidate” status in this forum to Godwin’s law...

Every time there is a post on Thompson, the “he’s not a candidate” line gets brought out. Of course then we get a litany of reasons he should not be or can not be president, or that polls are irrelevant or what have you...

Impressive responses to a non candidate...

So I see it reaching Godwin’s Law status on FR.

I think I will call it the FDT Corollary..

As for the rest, I understand, and you are very correct, the primary is not being held today.

I guess Fred still has some time...

Some of the internals are fascinating. I am not a poll expert, so it maybe this doesn't mean anything at all, but if I am reading it right, Fred dominates with white men ages 46-65. That age group is also the highest polled (44% of respondents).

I am not sure if that matters in the end or not, I was just fascinated to see the internals of the poll, which most don't let you see in that detail.

The headline could almost read

"Fred Dominates with Southern White Men"

>>> Is there some unseen advantage at this time to being undeclared?

Well, there is definitely a “seen” advantage: lots of BUZZ, 1st or 2nd in most early-state primary polls, 1st or 2nd nationally, and raising money instead of spending it.

As someone else said: “It’s August!”

Except for us politi-geeks, NOBODY pays attention in August (even in the actual election year).

A recent analysis of fundraising and cash on hand revealed that (except for Rudy) virtually ALL the money raised so far (over $120M) by Republican candidates has been spent:
Giuliani has raised $35.6 million, but only has $18.3 million
<< Fred only $3.46 million over the last three weeks but hasn’t spent any money yet either
Romney: $44.4 million raised, with only $3.1 million left
Paul has raised only $3 million, but still has $2.3 million on hand
McCain, has raised and spent $25.3 million with only $1.4 million left
Brownback has raised and spent $3.3 million with less than $500,000 left
Tancredo of the $2.8 million raised.has spent all but $500,000
Huckabee of his $1.3 million has $400,000 left
Hunter of $1.3 million raised has spent all but $200,000
Tommy Thompson campaign drowning in red ink after raising and spending only $890,000

So since Fred spent $350,000 of the 3.4 million, he is exactly tied for funds with Romney who is supposedly a money raising powerhouse, but he beats Romney in nearly every poll.

Plus, Romney has had to spend millions of his own money.

Oh, no, Fred’s DOOMED!! :p

Well, I do live in a log cabin in the mountains of north GA, but I don't believe in flying saucers so I guess I can't get on board Paul's express train that's highballing it straight to the White House (-:

I saw Ron Paul in one debate and I thought someone let lose a liberal Democrat into the debate on some of his views.

I looked at Ron Paul and kept thinking his doctor left him WAY under medicated.
