Security is being beefed up at the site of last week's bridge collapse after 16 people were arrested for trespassing and hindering the investigation, Minneapolis police said Wednesday.
Authorities are adding cameras, motion detectors and other technology that will alert police to intruders, Capt. Mike Martin told reporters during a news conference.
"The most important part is: Maintain the honor and the dignity (of the scene)," Martin said.
He said the state Department of Transportation is assuming control of security in the area, which is considered a death-scene investigation site.
Five people are confirmed dead in the collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge August 1.
Eight are missing and presumed dead. Their bodies are believed to be trapped under chunks of concrete and other debris and in crushed vehicles.
Navy and FBI divers are working "around the clock," Martin said, to recover evidence and retrieve the remains. One car was taken out of the water Tuesday because authorities said it was obstructing their work.
Martin said the recovery process will not be easy.
"As hard as it is for us to talk to people about this and to explain it in a way that is not too gruesome, those vehicles have been crushed, for the most part. There may be areas where they are protected that are inside that we haven't seen," he said.Pawlenty said in his proclamation.

A sign urges people not to linger near the bridge collapse site in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
I pray that those that are still missing were crushed immediately as opposed be being trapped underwater in a space. It gives me nightmares to consider the latter.
Thank God I do not live near these cretins.
I think it’s appalling beyond words that people would snap pictures of accidents.
This all began about 10 years ago, when a photographer for the Boston Globe (IIRC) took pictures of a poor man whose car crashed against a bridge or elevated track piling and burst into flames. The man got out and ran away from the car, but because he was soaked in gasoline, the flames followed him and the photographer calmly snapped pictures while the man died in agony. He made no effort to help the victim, and later defended it as “journalism.”
I wonder how many are envirowackos who are going to make Moorish fakumentaries blaming everything on republicans.
The business of an honest government should be transacted in public, not behind closed doors. Or police boundaries.
I found it odd that the day after the event, the Stone Arch Bridge about a mile upriver was also closed to the public. "On orders of the Fire Department," I was told. Sounds a little strange to me, considering there is no vehicular traffic allowed on the Stone Arch.
MINNEAPOLIS Authorities investigating the collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge are looking for a person who was in a kayak below or near the bridge when it tumbled into the Mississippi River last week, Minneapolis Police Capt. Mike Martin said Wednesday.
"We need to talk to that person," Martin said.
But it can’t be terrorism, the media immediately ruled that out first thing!
(It’s hard to use sarcasm effectively online)
That was my first thought also. What are they trying to hide?
Outside of attempting to gain entry to the immediate scene, in regards to the location of the sign, what's the big deal if people look at the wreckage from a distance?
