It’s good that he’s addressing the issue. But he shouldn’t propose any further government takeover than already exists. His call for a cure for cancer is noble, but scientists have been trying to find that for decades.

If elected to the Oval Office, Obama will call the President of Cancer and demand he raise the minimum wage.

Looking forward to the Iowa Straw Poll on Saturday. Tommy thinks he’ll finish at least second in the state.

the man is very personable when you meet him. And remember, Abraham Lincoln was no “looker” either. :)

Tommy and I differ on some issues, but we (the GOP) could do worse. I don’t mind a Conservative with Libertarian leanings.

Sure, why not! Mrs. Thompson has an elegant coat. My son says Mr. Thompson resembles Thurston Howell III.

38? He doesn’t look old enough to be married that long.

Tommy's in his mid 60s, a year older than Fred. You're the first person on FR to say he doesn't look very old, but that's fine with me.

That just means he takes good care of himself, and that’s good, since he won’t have the health concerns some of the other candidates have.

Thurton

Tommy

I suppose there's some slight resemblence between Thurton Howell III and Tommy Thompson. Makes more sense than the freeper who told me Tommy looks like Bert the muppet. ;-)

Aside from the basics - white man in late middle age - the eyebrows are the key resemblance.

I really hadn’t given Mr. Thompson much thought, so I’ll appreciate more information about his positions. Ultimately, it’ll come down to who’s on my ballot when the primary *finally* arrives, of course.

Yeah, I hate how Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina get to coronate the President for the rest of America. Back in 2000, Bush already had the nomination in the can by the time my state had a primary (and my preferred choice, Steve Forbes, had dropped out by then).

Of course that's one of the reasons I'm carpooling to Iowa on Saturday. I hope to GOTV for Tommy Thompson so he at least comes in third. I think he can with Fred, Rudy, and McCain all not participating.

If you look at the candidates on the issues, I think you will find TOMMY Thompson has the best track record of any statewide candidate. He's never waived on pro-life, pro-family beliefs, he's against all handouts for illegal aliens, he vetoed 1900 bills as Governor, he appointed great judges, he cut taxes, he was first in the nation in creating school vouchers and home schooling programs, he led the country in welfare reform. He's taken a "no new taxes" pledge for President that not even Duncan Hunter will take. Freepers are backing the wrong Thompson, while I'd happily back Fred over Hillary, he'd a very bipartisan Washington-establishment sorta guy and would probably be like having a third Bush term.

Freepers knock Tommy because he's low in the polls and isn't Mr. Charisma. I don't care if he was polling 0.00000001%, the primary is the time to vote for the person who would make the best President and that's Tommy Thompson. Why not the best? Vote with your heart in the primary and your head in the general election.

That would be quite a coincidence, seeing as how he finished second place in his home state's straw poll (to the other Thompson). Those who know him the best seem to support him the least.

From www.tommy2008.com, Information about Tommy’s track record:

Tommy Thompson is the reliable conservative in the 2008 presidential race.

Why?

* Tommy Thompson is the father of welfare reform, creating the groundbreaking Wisconsin Works program in Wisconsin that became the model for national and international reforms.

* Tommy Thompson created the first school choice program in the nation, giving thousands of Milwaukee students the choice of where they go to school – no matter where they live or how much money their parents make.

* As Governor, Tommy Thompson cut taxes 91 times to save taxpayers $16.4 billion.

* As Governor, Tommy Thompson used his veto pen more than 1,900 times to save taxpayers $287 million. Governor Thompson’s policies helped create more than 742,000 jobs.

* Governor Thompson is 100% pro-life and signed a ban on partial-birth abortion. Under Governor Thompson, the number of adoptions in Wisconsin increased by 22 percent, while the number of abortions decreased by 37 percent.

* Governor Thompson appointed strict constructionist judges who do not legislate from the bench.

* Governor Thompson introduced truth-in-sentencing to Wisconsin, eliminating the charade of parole and mandatory release programs.

* Governor Thompson signed legislation that banned Wisconsin communities from passing anti-gun ordinances that are stricter than state law.

* After 10 years of failed attempts, Tommy Thompson led the way in introducing private-sector competition to the government-run Medicare program as part of the new prescription drug benefit.

* Tommy Thompson rebuilt an essentially non-existent bioterrorism defense capability in the Department of Health and Human Services – making federal, state and local governments better prepared to respond to an attack.

* Governor Thompson believes marriage is between a man and a woman. Peorid He supports states’ rights in determining the definition of marriage and believes it should be done legislatively or by referendum, not by activist judges.

* Governor Thompson opposes amnesty for illegal aliens and believes that America must enforce its immigration policies to the fullest extent of the law. People who are found to be in the country illegally should be returned to their home countries and should have to wait at the end of the line, behind people who are seeking to enter the country or become citizens legally.

>> Those who know him the best seem to support him the least. <<

How is a close 2nd place finsh supporting someone the least? You ought to see Sam Brownback's numbers. I doubt he's polling in sixth in his home state's presidential contest.

In 2005, they conducted a hypothetical matchup between former Governor Tommy Thompson and 3-term incumbant U.S. Senator Herb Kohl in Tommy's home state in Wisconsin, and the numbered showed Tommy would have beaten Kohl like a drum. Tommy was elected Governor of a swing state four times and his brother Ed managed to get double-digit numbers in a statewide race just because his name was "Thompson". I'd hardly say Tommy is hurting for popularity in Wiscosnin.

Whenever Tommy beats Fred in an Iowa poll, the Fredheads spin it by saying all the Tommy voters "meant" to support Fred, so perhaps all the people who supported Fred in Wisconsin "meant" to vote for their own Gov. ;-)

Thanks, that’s very informative. Good luck in Iowa, and best wishes to *Tommy* Thompson. Perhaps *Tommy* Thompson will still be in the race when I finally get to vote!

Second place,

In 2005, they conducted a hypothetical matchup between former Governor Tommy Thompson and 3-term incumbant U.S. Senator Herb Kohl in Tommy's home state in Wisconsin, and the numbered showed Tommy would have beaten Kohl like a drum.

Hardly. And Tommy knew it, that's why he chickened out and let the Dairy Queen run effectively unopposed.

Tommy was elected Governor of a swing state four times and his brother Ed managed to get double-digit numbers in a statewide race just because his name was "Thompson".

Arguably by running and governing more like a Democrat than as a Republican. To be fair, rumor has it that he had to govern as a liberal so the press would give him a pass on his reportedly many Clintonesque indiscretions. It is doubtful that the national press or any national Democrat opponent would be so generous.

I'd hardly say Tommy is hurting for popularity in Wisconsin.

It's a real shame then that he couldn't win his home state's straw poll. This says a great deal about how he will do in the rest of the country or would do in a general election. We know him best, and we don't want him.

Yes, they were neigh-saying him all over the local conservative news media today.

We’ll see how it goes. I don’t have a stake in his success or failure.
