Among the dozens of wrenching accounts to come out of the collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge in Minneapolis, the actions of 20-year-old Jeremy Hernandez were a bright spot:
[ . . . ]
Mr. Hernandez had recently been forced to drop out of an automotive repair program because he could not afford the $15,000 tuition.
[ . . . ]
That has changed. On Saturday, Mr. Hernandez learned that Dunwoody College of Technology had offered him a full scholarship toward a degree in applied science.
[ . . . ]
When President Bushs staff contacted him to request a photo opportunity, He was just, like, Nope, she said.

He spent the weekend fishing. I can understand that......
When awards are awarded it is the citizen’s duty to accept them. It’s just one of those things. Photo with the Pres? No problem. Photo with Barry Bonds? No problem. There are other, more fundamental things to worry about.
I wouldn't pass up on fishing to give ANYBODY a photo op either.
Hmmm? Hernandez. Isn’t that a hipsanic name? Better check to see if he’s here legally or not. ( /SARC)
And this “story” rates being in the NYT because ???
How many here would have given the same answer for clinton (either one)?
most.
Don’t bother checking. If he was illegal, he wouldn’t have had to worry about paying for college. You would have done that for him
It might be hipsanic although not necessarily meaning he is hipsanic.
Since when did being used as a photo op become an award?
From the article I read he just doesn’t want attention and it may or may not have anything to do with his feelings for Bush although the article intimates it but doesn’t say outright. He thinks that others were heroes also.
LOL
I had a co-worker who refused to shake Bubba’s hand at the WH. He “didn’t know where it’s been”.
What a petty little man.
I’d agree. He just may not think it’s worth too much publicity.
Besides, I think photo-ops are a bit cheesy. At least, to specifically ask for them. Makes it kind of obvious the Pres (whoever) is trying to look good.
It’s an award. An honor thing. Accept it and forget it.
Is there anything this rag reports that doesn't have a Bush Bash embedded in some way?
It bashes Bush? Was that a trick question?
Usually that is the case. Accept the award and if given a chance to speak mention the many others. Like accepting an Emmy and mentioning everybody who ever crossed your path.
So they could Tweak the President’s nose by saying the guy wouldn’t have his picture taken with the President?? ;>)
In his case if was a fishing thing. And he chose to forget it.
Unreal. I would go bar-hopping with Bubba. Wouldn't let him touch my beer mug, for sure.
What makes you say that? (I mean, he probably is a liberal, but I don't see anything in either article that indicates he is a 'liberal boor'.
Well, fishing might be a reasonable excuse if the salmon were running.
Hillary! is Hipsanic..........
And has bad manners.
Although... There might be something to tiki’s comment! Hadn’t considered that.
Photo with Barry Bonds? No thanks.
Photo with Jessica Alba? Ok, you twisted my arm for citizenship.
“Hmmm? Hernandez. Isnt that a hipsanic name? Better check to see if hes here legally or not. ( /SARC)”
Stop giving Freepers a bad name.
Photo ops and fame just aren’t important to some people. Real heroes don’t try to glorify themselves after the fact. I’ve met a couple of Medal of Honor recipients, and they were quite humble people.
I wouldn't. If you meet a couple of nice young ladies XXX-42 would take both of them home (or out to his El Camino) and stick you with the bar tab.
Then we have people like the guy in this bridge story who probably should have done anything possible to avoid the media but just couldn’t resist getting face time on the news.

And DEFINITELY don't let him get his cigar anywhere near your beer.
Excellent thoughts, well put. In fact, his refusal to capitalize is, in my estimation, a laudable character trait perhaps equal to his heroism.
Not me. I don't drink with cowards.
Looks like the attention was too much, and he took off to calm down.
Remember, he was in that bus too....
..and he had the courage to save those children.
Take your comments elsewhere.
What a petty little man.
I think that he should have respected the office of the President regardless of his feelings of President Bush. I did shake President Clinton’s hand when he came to the EISENHOWER. It was an honor to shake the hand of a President. Luckily a few years later I was able to shake George Sr and George Jr’s hands as well.
Perhaps you’re right. That’s the impression I got when I read the article - it could go either way. No need to get snippy about it.
I don;t think so. I would turn something like that down, too.
You have got to be kidding.
A “nope” hardly makes his refusal equal to anything. He did what most of us would have done. Period.
He could just be camera shy. I don’t know if I would want all that exposure either.
He could be having issues too having been on that bus...
..the people who work with him seem to think highly of him.
How many here would have given the same answer for clinton (either one)?
most.
So true. Back in 95 I was a an Army Captain serving in Bosnia. Clinton was coming to visit our base and his staff said he wanted to promote a few soldiers and give out some awards. None of my troops wanted to be promoted by him or receive an awards from him. I sympathized, but because he was the CINC you had no choice even if you rightly felt he was a scumbag. I had to order the soldiers to keep their mouths shut and accept the award/promotion with dignity.
Luckily for us his schedule changed at the last minute and he didn’t visit our base.
He said, "Nope."
He's a damned BOOR!
I don't care how shy he is (wanna bet it's shyness?). Suck it up and go meet with the Commander in Chief. A "hero" ought to be able to manage that.
The kid was on that bus too...
..he went fishing.
Maybe he didn't feel like being part of a photo-op right now.
Maybe something else, too.
The offer to bet is still on the table.
You decide.
