Merv Griffin, the entertainment mogul, singer, talk-show host and horseman who has called La Quinta home for 20 years, is in grave condition with cancer.
Entertainment Tonight has reported that sources tell the Hollywood show that Griffins prognosis is not good. Griffins representatives have not returned calls to The Desert Sun to confirm or deny.
Griffin, 82, was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles in mid-July after a recurrence of the prostate cancer he battled in 1996 was found during a routine examination.
The creator of Jeopardy! Wheel of Fortune and the host of the iconic Merv Griffin Show talk program has kept a 250-acre ranch in La Quinta since he visited the desert with Johnny Carson in 1986 to see Jimmy Connors play tennis.
An active desert resident, he has been a supporter of the La Quinta Arts Festival and the owner of the Merv Griffin Givenchy Resort & Spa in Palm Springs, now The Parker. Most recently, he has been the developer of an upscale equine community on a section of his ranch.
In 2005, his thoroughbred Steviewonderboy, won the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year, racing's top award for a horse. The horse's Kentucky Derby campaign was derailed by injury, despite his win at the Breeder's Cup. Griffin, earlier this year, campaigned a horse called Cobalt Blue on the Derby trail.
In February, the La Quinta Arts Foundation held its Silver Anniversary Gala saluting Merv Griffin.
In an interview at the time, Griffin said about helping found the Arts Festival: There was a whole group at that time, wonderful women, who said, Come on, lets really do it up big. So I lent my name and brought out as many famous people as I could. It wasnt pretentious at all. You wandered around and bought, and there were some amazing things.

Sad. He’s a friend of Nancy Reagan, too.
Prayers for Merv.
Prayers.
At first I thought he’d been holed up in a La Quinta hotel room for the last 20 years. Journalism 101 apparently is a snoozefest.
Is he still with Eva Gabor?
Is Eva Gabor still alive?
Am I out of touch?
No.
Is Eva Gabor still alive?
No.
Am I out of touch?
Yes

LOL
Always liked him ...even before I knew he was a conservative ...
get well Merv......thx for your insights in an industry who
has lost her way
Heartfelt prayers for Merv, one of the good guys.
“grave condition” perhaps not the most feliticious phrase to use.
The guy has bought a lots of smiles and entertainment to all people worldwide.
Wishing Merv the very best during this fight. He’s a good man, so is his son. Good Republicans; friends of the Reagans (Merv was on the President Reagan cross-country memorial with Nancy - as pallbearer). And remember, it was Merv Griffin who helped put the kaibosh on the slanted CBS Reagan movie. He fought hard to block that - even appearing on shows like Larry Elder’s.....

How sad, prayers for Merv.......

(Keep the Faith, my friends! We are the saviors of the Republic! Now and Forever!)

Unfortunately, I think it is one of those very carefully chosen phrases used when there is little doubt as to the outcome.
Prayers for Merv's comfort and solace to his loved ones.

Prayers for Merv from some of our Seinfeld FRiends.
prayers
You’ll be in my thoughts and prayers, Merv. You’re a great entertainer and a great American.
Mark
The Merv Griffin Show, Jeopardy!, Wheel of Fortune...he gave us clean, family-oriented television that has outlasted most of the dreck seen on the airwaves in the past 40+ years. He’s a throwback to the days of Lawrence Welk, Ed Sullivan, Red Skelton, and Carol Burnett. Give it the good fight, Merv.
He is one of the class acts in Hollywood....prayers for him
Prayers for Merv...
The Wheel of Fortune just came up “Lose a Turn.”
Prayers up.
Sad to hear. He is a great supporter of Tb horse racing. Steviewonderboy isn’t the first Tb he has owned and raced. The article does contain one inaccuracy: Steviewonderboy did not win 2005 Horse of the Year. He was 2 yr old of the year in 2005. The Horse of the Year winner in 2005 was Saint Liam.
Wasn’t “Let’s Make a Deal” his creation too?
Brilliant guy - I tape “Jeopardy” every night.
Sad for Nancy—to lose another old friend.
I always think of that when Merv is mentioned too. Merv's had a lot of financial success in his life, but he's done it quietly and he is so much more likeable than Trump.

Yes. It's not easy growing old.
Damn.
He reminds me of the days when there were real gentlemen in Hollywood.
God Bless, Merv..
WOW!!
I never knew all this about him!!
What a great guy!!
Prayers up for Merv!!
Prayers up!
Another sign of the passing of an age.
Merv certainly left his mark on Americana.
Including Art Linkletter, who is still up and around.
Ergo, *we* are out of context, not the "journalist".
And they never did catch Merv for being “The Elevator Killer”:
Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr: You! You’re the elevator killer! Merv Griffin!
Merv Griffin: Yeah.
Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr: Why?
Merv Griffin: I don’t know. I’ve always just loved to kill. I really enjoyed it. But then I got famous, and - it’s just too hard for me. And so many witnesses. I mean, *everybody* recognized me. I couldn’t even work anymore. I’d hear, “Who’s that lurking over there? Isn’t that Merv Griffin?” So I came to Europe to kill. And it’s really worked out very well for me.
Try not to miss it myself. Last two weeks has been "Celebrity Jeopardy". Funny stuff. About 1 out of 3 of the "celebritys" have a brain and can answer a question. Can't help but bring back memories of SNL with the "celebrity" impersonators. Sean Connery and his "Your mother, Trebeck!" was great stuff.
One of the MANY reasons I love Art:
Beloved former TV host and now senior citizens’ spokesman Art Linkletter has decided to go toe-to-toe with the AARP on politics and policy. Mr. Linkletter, the former host of “Kids Say the Darnedest Things” and current National
Chairman of the United Seniors Association (USA), made his views on the AARP known Monday in an interview on Fox News’ “Your World with Neil Cavuto.”
During the interview, the 93-year-old conservative Linkletter touted the importance of Social Security reform with personal retirement accounts and went on to call the
AARP, which opposes President Bush’s reform plan, “the largest liberal lobbying group in Washington.”
HUMAN EVENTS has learned USA has no intention of backing down from Linkletter’s criticism of the AARP. In fact, the coming issue of USA Next, a quarterly publication by USA and a special supplement to HUMAN EVENTS, takes on the AARP directly.
In addition, USA CEO Charlie Jarvis will appear on Fox News’ “O’Reilly Factor” on Thursday, February 10, to launch the “USA Next Stop Scaring Seniors NOW!” — a campaign
focusing on the AARP and the alleged damage it has done and continues to do to America.
