WASHINGTON-- U.S. President George W. Bush and his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy will have "a casual lunch" at the coastal home of Bush's parents in Kennebunkport, Maine, on Saturday with the participation of their wives and families, the White House said Friday.
"I think that the Sarkozys are in for a real treat to be able to get to meet all of the family, including some of the children," White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino said.
"The extended Bush family" will be at the private, social get- together, Perino said, noting "it's a casual lunch so they could talk about any range of issues. When world leaders get together there's a possibility they could discuss business."
The spokesman could not say how many people would attend.
On U.S-French relations, Perino said the two countries are working closely on a range of issues, especially at the United Nations, that include Lebanon, Sudan and Iran.
Perino said Bush could raise the climate change conference that he is holding at the end of September and to which France has been invited.
Sarkozy and his wife Cecelia, who arrived in the United States a week ago, are spending their summer holidays at a lake in the town of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, about 80 kilometers away from the Bush compound in Kennebunkport.
Sarkozy, who won the French presidential run-off in early May, pledged to warm up French-U.S. relations.
The Saturday lunch will be the third time Bush and Sarkozy have met. Their first meeting took place in late 2006 when Sarkozy was campaigning for president. The latest one was at the G-8 summit in Germany in June.
This is the weekend of the Annual Bush Family Reunion held in Kennebunkport every year. It is an honor and a privilege for Sarko and family to be invited to share in this usually family only occasion.
They can make beautiful music together!
Details to follow.
Walker's Point, is the summer home of 41st President of the United States George H. W. Bush. Located adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean in southern Maine, near the town of Kennebunkport, the property has been a family retreat for more than a century.
The estate was first purchased by St. Louis banker George H. Walker in the late 19th century, who built the mansion in 1903. The estate was later sold to his daughter Dorothy Walker Bush and her husband Prescott Bush, and has remained in the Bush family since.
The Kennebunkport estate was where President George H. W. Bush spent much of his childhood, and he inherited the property on the death of his parents. As an adult, Bush, his wife Barbara, and their children George, Jeb, Marvin, Neil, Dorothy, and Robin spent most summers at the estate, as well as family weddings, holidays, and receptions. While at the "summer White House", Bush hosted world leaders including Margaret Thatcher and Mikhail Gorbachev for informal and private meetings. As a young man, Bush relocated to Houston, Texas, and today the Bushes maintain a working residence in Tanglewood, where they spend most of their time.
Currently, President George W. Bush, who often stays at Prairie Chapel, his Crawford, Texas ranch, visits with family in Kennebunkport several times a year.
The estate is situated on the strip of land called Walker's Point which juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. The large central house, built in the New England shingle style, has nine bedrooms, four sitting rooms, an office, a den, a library, a dining room, a kitchen, and various patios and decks. Next to the main house are a four-car garage, a pool, tennis court, dock, boathouse, and guesthouse. There are spacious lawns on either side of the house, on which there is a small sportsfield.
The entrance is gated, and guarded by Secret Service officers, though visitors can see the driveway leading up to the main house and a circular driveway, in the middle of which is a large flagpole flying the American flag.
Please, please Mr. Bush don’t say you looked into his eyes and saw...
I’m sure we will have pictures. Thanks Cincinna.
I’m in the wrong business. I never get a summer vacation.
we could learn a lot from this French guy
bet unlike Bush, he is intimate with the Camp of the Saints
Newt wrote an interesting article on how we should emulate Sarko and the French if we want to elect a Republican in 2008.
The article was in USA Today, which forbids linking, so I couldn’t post it, but you might want to check it out.
I'm thinking lobster.

You have a great thinker.

I saw Newt lecturing on that recently.
how Sarkozy had this groundswell on the internet....which is all the more remarkable since that implies a youth vote
