Tommy Thompson comment on future of campaign planned within 48 hours

MILWAUKEE (AP) - A staffer with Tommy Thompson's presidential campaign says the former Wisconsin governor will make an announcement about his future within the next 48 hours.

In the weeks prior to today's Republican straw poll in Iowa, Thompson repeatedly said he'd need to finish in the top two to keep his campaign going.

Instead he finished 6th, making it likely that he'll drop his White House bid.

He finished with about 1,000 votes, or seven percent of the total.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney won with almost 4,500 votes, or about 32%.

Thompson campaign spokesman Brian Dumas (DOO'-mas) says the staff is obviously disappointed.

The 65-year-old Thompson was Wisconsin's longest-serving governor. He won an unprecedented four terms before resigning when President Bush appointed him Secretary of Health and Human Services in 2001.

I guess there is only room for one Thompson in this race!

I hope a few drop out so there is a little more leg room in the debates. Thompson is great but this isn’t his forum.

I’m happy and surprised Tancredo did as well as he did. I’m sorry for Hunter. Looks like T-Thompson will check out. He probably will have others following him soon.

LOL

They made sure to put the pronunciation there.

Am I the only one who immediately thought of the A&W commercial?

No one cared about him running, so why does he think anyone is going to care about him dropping out?

If Tommy drops out, Paul should too since he came in 4% less than Tommy did. Paul will not though because he is too stupid too. He will stay in the race and bring more exposure to his nuttiness. After losing the POTUS race by a very wide margin, Paul will lose his house seat to a real republican.

...the former Wisconsin governor will make an announcement about his future within the next 48 hours.

This is too easy. He doesn't have one.

What other Thompson is in the race?

Surely you don't mean Fred. He' still "testing the waters." The water temperature has to be ju-u-u-u-u-ust right, or he's not jumping in.

Doesn't coming in 9th place help?

No, not really.

Exactly , hopefully Brownback-pro-illegal, and Huckabee-pro-tax will also abandon their “going nowhere fast” campaigns . We need to consolidate this race so we can eliminate the “don’t stand a chance crowd” from trying to sap good campaign funds and resources .

So much for the Iowa Straw Poll being “meaningless”.

Huckabee won the Golden Ticket out of Iowa.
He’s the one bottom tier guy who will get to continue on.

ahem...Paul got more votes than Thompson. This is a win for Paul because he scored well enough to continue and even increase his fundraising.

Nope. The straw poll is all about the expectations game.
Thompson did what he needed to, which was to win among all the non-participating candidates.

Ron Paul, however, needed to place second or third to prove his “movement” was real, and more than just the kooky Deaniacs having another go on the internet.
Instead, Paul was way in the back of the pack, proving everyone's suspicions.

For the record I was talking about Fred Thompson, not Tommy.
Not sure if you were too.

As for Tommy Thompson, he did the worst among the participating candidates, except for FR's favorite, Duncan Hunter, of course.
Ron Paul placing just ahead of him - and still in the single digits - does not reflect well on his supposed internet following.

He'll drop out. There hasn't been much interest in his candidacy.

Unfortunately, the bulk of Paul’s “internet following” consists of Perl scripts, and due to shameless biocentrist discrimination, they’re not allowed to vote in anything but online polls.

I already tried to point out that Paul’s support is all from PHP scripts to some of his followers here, but they demanded to see the proof and then starting ranting something about it being an “inside job.”

Interesting how that works. Hunter gets the 2nd most amount of hype here, after Fred. Everyone remember all the freeper buzz about Alan Keyes? Condi Rice? George Allen? Remember how they were "destined" to be on the Presidential ticket?

The more we have freepers here convinced Fred's nomination is a done deal, the more I'm convinced he's the Republican Obama. All hype, no substance.

Group thought is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.

I generally agree with all of that, however, luckily, not all FReepers can be completely wrong at all times.

For example, there was also a lot of FReeper buzz for GWB in 2000. Quite a bit more than for Alan Keyes. It is rather parallel to the situation today with Fred vs. Duncan.

I’ve had a good feeling about Fred Thompson from the start, and that has nothing to do with what anyone here has said. But I’m also not quite ready to bet the farm on him just yet.

So whom are you throwing your support to now that Tommy Thompson is out of the race?
