NY Times Provides Cover for Dem Shift on Iraq: 'U.S. Can't Walk Away'
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Is it just me, or did the New York Times just drop a bombshell?

By the headline of its editorial this morning, Wrong Way Out of Iraq, and its introductory paragraphs -- about how the British model of withdrawing to bases in Basra hasn't worked, I was sure we were headed for a demand for total, rapid withdrawal. When suddenly came this conclusion:

The United States cannot walk away from the new international terrorist front it created in Iraq. It will need to keep sufficient forces and staging points in the region to strike effectively against terrorist sanctuaries there or a Qaeda bid to hijack control of a strife-torn Iraq.
Whoah! Whether in connivance with the campaigns of the Dem candidates, or on its own initiative, the Times has clearly provided cover on the left for Hillary, Obama et al. to back away from their defeatist positions. Does the Times really care about fighting terrorists, or has it realized that the Dem candidate can't win in '08 by running on a platform of unconditional surrender?

Note: There is some ambiguity in the Times position. Is it saying that the U.S. should pull all forces out but stage them over the horizon — the good old Murtha Okinawa Gambit?

If the Democrats win next November, they won't pull out. Rush Limbaugh has been predicting this development for months now. He'll talk about this again today on his show.

The Democrats are happy to inflict a defeat on Bush. But they won't take the responsibility for that upon themselves.

Clearly this is designed to give Hillary! cover, not the Dems in general.

meanwhile, the Dems have given comfort and aid to the enemy with their “pull out” talk, sabotaged the Iraqi political process, and really made this more dangerous and difficult. how dare they say they “support” the troops?

Its all politics. The Democrats want to discredit Bush's presidency. If they can do that, that's what they'll do. But they don't want to be saddled with the image of the party of defeat if Bush is no longer around to blame for it.

Actually, the "cover" this ed creates is in the section not in bold: "the new international terrorist front it created in Iraq."

That's going to be the Dems' story--we'd LOVE to pull out, but WE created the terrorism in Iraq, so WE have to take care of it.

“the new international terrorist front [it] created in Iraq.”

Thank you, my thoughts exactly.

I don't think any of this will shape public opinion for the DBM/dems. The surge is working and the DBM know it and now they have to give cover for these idiots they want to keep giving power too.

Levin, said basically he saw improvement from the surge, but the political side was failing...That's double speak!

The NYT and the Dems have finally caught on that rooting for the terrorists against America is a loser for them.

This ratmedia attempt to cover the rat’s ash on his timid about face on Iraq will go down as a watershed moment in the history of the ratmedia’s decline and ultimate fall. Oh they will always be around, movies did not kill legitimate theater, but they reduced live play’s importance. Television did not kill movies, and videos will not kill television. The NYT and the rest of the ratmedia are on a downward spirial and nothing will change that. THIS bit of organized lying will be seen in history’s rear view mirror as an example of the ratmedia’s loss of power. Let’s put up our feet and watch! :-)

” Actually, the “cover” this ed creates is in the section not in bold: “the new international terrorist front it created in Iraq.” “

Of course, there’s a difference between creating terrorism and creating a front on which to fight it somewhere other than, say, within five miles or so of, oh, say, TIMES SQUARE, for instance.

"Actually, the “cover” this ed creates is in the section not in bold: “the new international terrorist front it created in Iraq.”

So the new Dim mantra becomes: Yes it was a wrong war, yes we don't want to be there, but we have to stay, (and it's all Bush's fault!)"

IOW's, the Dems only want out of Iraq if they can force Bush to do it. They don't want their fingerprints on the Pull-Out because the consequense would be huge WHEN we get hit by the next terror attack.

Ah, the John Kerry position has come full circle. I voted for the war before I voted against it. But now I’m for it. And it’s all Bush’s fault I have to keep flip flopping.

Wait...I thought al Queda wasn't in Iraq. The Dems have been telling us that the war in Iraq is keeping us from defeating al Queda. I'm getting confused here.
