Honor Killings in Turkey Claimed Lives of Mother, Daughter

A woman (47) deserted her husband in Kars, in eastern Turkey, and moved in with her divorced daughter (27), mother of three. They were located by the husband/father and his son who came yesterday to the women's home in Kocaeli, where the 19 year old son brutally killed his mother and his sister by beating them on the head with a bat, with his three young nephews watching.
Upon his arrest the 19 year old said that he had killed the women to clean the honor of his family.
Recently, the new women MPs from all political parties in Turkish parliament had announced that they would cooperate in the fight against honor killings and to elevate the status of women in Turkey.

that is very extreme. I am in turkey for the time being and it is NOT LIKE THAT. A couple divorced, so gracefully and normal you woulda never thought it happened. She moved into a house with her sister, the husband was around all the time. I would still see them at bars together, drinking. Their kids came during the summer where they were all together, for the kids sake i suppose. and by kids i mean 30-35 years old.
She moved to a town 1.5 hours away since this one is very small, not out of fear but typical european gossip. 2 months ago they got back together.
No vengence, no spite, but surely a divorce without the violence. there are bad apples in every bunch, a lot of these people aren’t educated, haven’t experienced much of life but don’t take the 1 criminal and make it a stereotype.
this place is very peaceful when it comes to the ‘religon of peace’. everybody is so fn chill you wouldn’t believe your eyes.
it would be like me taking a headline out of usatoday with a black man going to jail for murdering a family of five and saying ALL OF AMERICA is like that.

I lived among Muslims in Dearborn, Michigan for 2 years.
Yes, there were a couple of cases. In one the father abused his daughters then fled back “home” before social services got the courts to act. In another, there was a murder.
However, the vast majority of Muslims I met were good people, just as good, and just as flawed, as the Christians that I served as clergy.
What Turkey is doing it to address the whole issue of domestic violence, something that the US and Europe did some 20-30 years ago. The reason we find this example in Turkey so appalling is that we are embarrassed at our own past, including teachings by some churches that abusive behavior was the Will of God.

Just like everywhere else, everyday there are murders out of affairs/cheating/running away. love combined with anger is a very normal drug which has no cure, which also can lead to any emotion. A man with flowers, or a woman with a knife. it goes both ways.
thanks for the kind words, this place is definitely modernized as many people may think we ride camels and wear turbans etc. everyone is well dressed, we have no homeless, are allowed to drink in public, park anywhere we want to without being ticketed.
taking one headline like this and saying “ROP” alert is like me taking a pastor molesting a kid’s headline and saying “Western Society Morality alert!”

So make it a big ROP headline, i bet tonight someone else will be killed for running away from their spouse, IN EVERY MAJOR CITY WORLDWIDE. It’s not localized and has nothing to do with religon in this case.

We keep reading articles of Muslim extremism in Turkey, with responses like yours. We heard the same response when the 3 Christians were killed by Islamists. In fact, we heard the same response for all of Islam after 9/11.

The only real difference is that in America it would be the ex doing the killing, and he would probaby use a gun.
Also, he would get no slack from the legal system because it was a “family matter.” I understand this is not the case in many Muslim countries. Not sure about Turkey.
So the killing is essentially the same. How it is viewed by society and handled by the legal system may be quite different.
Got a figure for how many iraqi families have been displaced/dead so far? it’s just a bit higher than that.

Where are the NOW women? I know, their idealism only shows when their personal safety is assured in the US.
Any “RELIGION” that condones this, is not a religion &
should be BANNED EVERYWHERE.
This “RELIGION” is PURE EVIL.
You ARE aware that these type killings happen in the U.S. every day except that it’s usually the ex or estranged husband or boyfriend doing the killing. And while we don’t call it an “honor” killing, it’s the same motive — wounded pride, uncontrolled ego, or insane jealousy that you don’t “own” the woman any more.
