Time magazine remains the nation's largest newsweekly, but its lead over archrival Newsweek has narrowed considerably, according to circulation figures released Monday by the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Time's total paid and verified weekly circulation during the six months ended June 30 stood at 3.4 million, down 17.1% from 4.1 million during the same period last year following a reduction in January in the magazine's rate base. Newsweek's circulation stood at 3.1 million, virtually unchanged from a year earlier.

Verified subscriptions at Time plunged 63.5% to 128,032 during the six months ended June 30, from 350,623 a year earlier.

Also in January, Time began publishing on Fridays, rather than Mondays, and overhauled the magazine's design to place a greater emphasis on news analysis.

“Time’s Lead Over Newsweek Narrows”

This is like saying North Korea has a bigger, more vibrant economy than Zimbabwe’s - it doesn’t really matter much.

Who needs Time or Newsweak anyway? They summarize and analyze events up to ten days old. The internet news cycle leaves them in the dust.

Unless you’re interested in the leftie spin on last week’s news, they’re both worthless. And all their filler articles are worse than worthless.

Look at those numbers. Considering that many of their subscribers probably get both, that’s what, around 1% of the American population? Public Access channels in New York probably get those kinds of numbers...or MSNBC...

Their spin used to be important in determining public opinion, but now bloggers and bulletin board websites beat them by a week or more.

I didn't even realize these magazines still existed - outside of the waiting rooms of dentist offices, that is.

I remember back in the 1970s, these magazines were one of my major sources of news. It might seem ridiculous to some younger people today but back before the Internet and instant communication, you could get a magazine in the mail that was printed days earlier and consider yourself completely up to date on what was going on in the world.

It took days to get to you.
It was printed over two days.
It was based upon reporting and editing 5-7 days back,
On events that occured 10 days back.

Wow, losing TWO out of every THREE subscribers and STILL in first place?
