Deadly Chinese missile worries India, Israel
August 14, 2007 08:45 IST Last Updated: August 14, 2007 09:25 IST
India has proposed a collaboration with Israel in developing unmanned combat helicopters for the countries' navies, a media report said.
The proposal was put forward by Chief of Naval Staff Sureesh Mehta during talks with Israel's Navy commander Maj Gen DanBashat in New Delhi last week, investigative publication 'DEBKAfile' reported.
Mehta estimated that the Indian Navy would need 40-50 helicopters of this kind, the report said, adding the project would be a revolutionary step for the navies of both countries providing them with their first independent air arms.
'India's coastline still vulnerable'
Israel sorely missed this capability during its war with Hezbollah last year, when its vessel Hanit was hit and crippled by what was assumed to be a Chinese-made C-802 shore-to-sea missile near Beirut.
Indian warships also face the same threat as Israel since Pakistan has acquired the C-802 from China. Both have therefore opted for the same antidote, a sophisticated unmanned combat helicopter, the report said.
Iran and Syria have also acquired the C-802 missiles, it said.
The C-802, designed in China, has a range of 8 km and its ability to gain altitude on its way to target turns it into a kind of cruise missile which can fly out of range of navy vessels' electronic defences, it said.
The shore-to-ship weapon is also armed with superior navigation, guidance and jamming capabilities.
I wonder how much of the targeting technology was bought from Clinton and his pals in exchange for campaign dollars.
First, “deadly” toys with lead paint, now “deadly” missiles. Is “Chinese food” safe to eat anymore or is it “deadly”, too? Gotta wonder.
Either way, it’s all pointed at us.
Probably all of it.

I’ve got to wonder if a Chinese missile can hit an Israeli ship.. if the Iranian Chinese missiles can hit an American ship. I wonder if that ship hitting was something of a warning to American forces in the persian gulf to leave Iran alone.
Well either way Chinese technology is likely to get better then it is over the coming years, even without spying. They are training tens of thousands of engineers in all the different engineering disciplines. And presumably as they get more money deploying their own engineers in all the aspects of designing whatever they are trying to build. Which there must be a mind blowing amount of engineering going into an anti-ship missile. From all the different electronics, guidance, chemical fuel, explosives mix etc..
That looks like a good project for a good cause.
MI ping
Hybrid technology... Chinese and Russian engineering in an Iranian package.
I wouldn't advise ordering the Kung Pao Chicken if it arrives on the tip of a missile.
This turned a defensive screen into a sitting duck.
Ah thanks for that explanation, that makes sense. It must be tricky for American war planners with hundreds of planes, drones and missiles in the air sometimes, to decide if they want the automated gun turrets on.
I guess we must also assume that the Chinese don’t yet have the capability to beat the ship defenses when activated.
Stopped reading here.
Wasn’t there something similar at work when the Argentines hit HMS Sheffield with an Exocet during the Falklands War? The captain was speaking to the MOD at the exact moment of the missile’s arrival and certain key systems had been turned off because they tended to interfere with communications being used?
Doesn’t China have a Supersonic anti-ship missle called “Sunburn”? I remember reading about it. If I remember there was no defense for it at the time.
Yes, however its anti-missile systems were nowhere near as advanced.
No Idea.. but I found this on FR (where else!)

Sweet, Thanks....And good news to boot!!
Why would they need to turn the system off? Don’t they have automated IFF systems to prevent accidental engagement of friendly aircraft? We do.
I think the issue was shooting down falling ordinance.
:-> “Proceed with caution” :->
The Chinese brought the Sunburn from Russia for a batch of export destroyers. The Sunburn & the C-802,pretty much represent 2 different classes of weaponry. The C-802 is much smaller, nimble & is more stealthy in flight, while the Sunburn is much bigger & faster, which can cause damage even if destroyed by defensive weapons.
Cool, Thanks. I was reading up on it the other night. Quite the scary missile.
Couldn’t we take out their Sunburn missile with our SPF-15?
Well,it would only be a threat to the US or Japanese navies if the Chinese launched a surprise attack or launched them with nuclear warheads. The same cannot be said about the Taiwanese or other Chinese rivals.
Talking about Pakistani missiles, they also operate the French Exocet & the US Harpoon, including the newest Block-2 variant. In the same category as the C-802,but more sophisticated & having sublaunch capability.
Post 19 has a link regarding the new SeaRAM anti-ship missle defense system.
