San Francisco's skies are safe for the Blue Angels. A Board of Supervisors committee Monday rejected a measure that would have called for a permanent end to the high-flying, aerobatic show that happens yearly during Fleet Week.
The committee voted 2-1 to table the measure, authored by Supervisor Chris Daly, effectively killing it. But Daly, who cited public safety and noise concerns as his reasons for proposing the ban, promised to continue pushing it.
"We've been lucky here in San Francisco," Daly said, noting that 26 crew members have died in incidents since 1946 when the Navy formed the flight demonstration team.
In April, a Blue Angel F/A-18 Hornet jet crashed during a performance in Beaufort, S.C., killing the pilot, injuring eight people and damaging several homes.
"Think about what would happen if there was a crash in San Francisco. Obviously, there would be significant loss of life beyond losing a pilot," said Daly, who added that the crash in South Carolina prompted him to seek the ban.
But the other members of the Government Audit and Oversight Committee - supervisors Sean Elsbernd and Michela Alioto-Pier - were not convinced, saying that the measure failed to account for the economic impact of visitors who come specifically for the show and noted that no one with expertise about the risks of the event testified at the hearing.
"(The measure) is a little fly-by-night, 'let's do this because we think it might not be safe,' " said Alioto-Pier, who said she was contacted by hundreds of city residents on the issue and most wanted the Blue Angels to stay.
A spokesman for the Navy said the Federal Aviation Administration consults with the Blue Angels on every show about the potential risks of performing certain maneuvers. ...

- The Blue Angels fly over San Francisco as they practice for the 2006 Fleet Week show last October.
The Blues should boycott SF...................
They were just here in Hillsboro Oregon.
The very fact that this was even up for debate is further proof that General Hummel should have been allowed to nerve gas San Francisco...
Safety my brookdale. These leftists just hate the military.
I used to live in SF in the late 80’s.
The Blue Angels and Fleet Week was an awesome thing to experience.
Contrary to popular belief , there are many patriots in the Bay area.
The crowds were always large.
I am so very, very envious!!!! I really miss watching them. Every summer they would fly in Seattle over Lake Washington, it was fantastic. Now that I am in LA I never see them. Hope you had an opportunity to enjoy their show. :-)
Daly wants to ban the Blue Angels because he is a pascifist weenie.
Frankly, if San Francisco wants to activate their aerial defenses to prevent the Blue Angels from flying overhead, they are welcome to do so.
That's exactly it.
Back in the 90's I knew an uber lib in Berkeley CA. I remember his talking about how awesome the Blue's were and how special SF was because of Fleet Week. I would bet money he's one calling to cancel the Blue's today.
Military cool went Clintoon in office, baaad when GWB in office.
Remember DiFi freaking out every year? I think the Navy was about to incorporate a new “Flying Finger” formation in her honor, before she was elected to the Senate.
The U.S. military should boycott San Francisco.
Even if the city is invaded by the Chi-coms.
I’m surprised there wasn’t a resolution to ban Fleet Week.
If you ever watch the Blues from a rooftop in SF or equivalent distance, you’ll acquire a new definition of LOUD. Unbelievably LOUD.
The Blue Angels should do a very low and fast fly-by of city hall.
Isn’t he the lunatic who said we didn’t need a military, and that local police forces could deal with terrorism?
Must be a terrible place to live. I was there in the 60’s and had a lot of fun but the Homo’s were all over the place. Never want to go back to that land of oz.
Yup. Even took my daughter up to Sacramento to see the Thunderbirds and new F-22 demos.
We’ll be out to cheer on the Blue Angels too again this year.
Supervisor Chris Daly: “Look at ME! Look how much I CARE!”
Post #5 LOLOLOLOL. That movie rocked.
I was pulling for the moonbats on this one.
Banning the Blue Angels would have opened up a time slot for a pro-America city to enjoy their show.
I work in SF and during the Fleet Week practice (I think it’s always the Friday before the big show) it is so loud, the zooming overhead, that no one can work, really.
I go around the office saying “The sound of freedom!”
The best way to watch the Blue Angels is from a boat on the SF Bay. . .I did that last year—fun!
The same moron is trying to get Michael Savage fired. They also passed a resolution praising Hugo chavez’s commitmen to democracy. I don’t dont know how savage can live out there!!
I’ve heard that Fleet Week in SF is still a very cool event.

Yes, far better to endanger thousands of lives and homes and possibly the bridges.
And, no, you can't accuse me of being anti-military. The Blue Angels buzzing the city for fun is not the same thing.
He’s got the pervert / pedophile grin down.
They are not doing it for fun. The Blue Angels is about the most effective recruiting tool the Navy has.
The Frisco board of supes didn’t slap Daly down because they disagree with him. They gave him the public backhand for standing up in a meeting and intimating that Newsom is a crack head.
I would like for my kids to experience it
Looking at that article the guy appears to be such a hothead he can only rise so far and only in an extreme left place like SF.
Daly is married to Sarah Low Daly, whom he met at the World Youth Festival in Havana, Cuba
In case you didn't know, the World Youth Festival is (was?) a Communist thing. I'm guessing he doesn't have a big problem with Castro's military, just ours.
He should pray (in a Commie-materialist kind of way) that one of the Blue Angel birds doesn't launch a little GPS-guided present at his house on the way by.
If Daly was so concerned about fatalities how about banning gays? How many have died of AIDS?
I have a suggestion for them, do a flyby of the supervisors house and hit the afterburners...bwahahahahha!
“We’ve been lucky here in San Francisco,” Daly said, noting that 26 crew members have died in incidents since 1946 when the Navy formed the flight demonstration team.
“Think about what would happen if there was a crash in San Francisco. Obviously, there would be significant loss of life beyond losing a pilot,” said Daly, who added that the crash in South Carolina prompted him to seek the ban.”
If he is so worried about protecting the citizens of San Fransicko, perhaps he should ban homosexuality considering the tens of thousands of SF residents that have died from AIDS.
Daley met his wife while both were at a “Youth Meeting” in Havana.
Reading Daly's Wikipedia page, it seems that Daly is so far left he's attacking other SF liberals for not being as far moonbat liberal progressive as he is.
A lot of estrogen in that family!
They are not buzzing the city. They have safety rules on altitude and such.
What asinine thinking. This effiminate little loser is implying that Blue Angels are flying the equivalent of WWI fighters patched together with duct tape & baling wire.
But then again, that's what we'd end up with if dhimmocratic ninnies like Daly are put in charge of our military budget.
Admit it, Daly, you hate the military and all it stands for.
I watched them one year from a boat right on the SF waterfront. A single plane broke formation and headed over the golden gate. I watched him instead of the formation. He came in from the west gaining speed right down to 10 feet above the water. As he crossed the waterfront 100 feet in front of us a halo of condensed air formed around the cockpit, an unbelievable sight. Only after he passed did we hear him. I will never forget that sight.
Why does he not ban hippie druggies and queers.
Far more of them have died in San Francisco.
How about homeless bums? more of them die than the Blue Angels.
I was dining in a little dive Mongolian BBQ restaurant downtown during Fleet Week a few years ago, and I felt a small pang of pity for our nation’s enemies when an F-18 thundered overhead. As stunning as the noise was, I thought that it must be even more stunning when it’s coupled with the knowledge that they’re coming to kill you, and a real bummer to die with dirty underpants.
San Francisco can block the American military from their skies when they have an air force capable of doing so. I don’t think they’ll have such a thing for some time.
