Suicide bombers kill 20 in Iraq sect attack

Reuters

Tuesday, August 14, 2007

BAGHDAD - Suicide bombers driving fuel tankers killed 20 people and wounded 70 in what appeared to be an attack on an ancient minority sect in northern Iraq on Tuesday, police said.

Police said it appeared three bombers driving separate tankers had attacked Yazidi sect members in different neighbourhoods in Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, detonating their vehicles in quick succession.

Yazidis are members of a pre-Islamic Kurdish sect and live in northern Iraq and Syria.

Yazidis in Iraq say they have faced discrimination because the chief angel they venerate as a manifestation of God is often identified as the fallen angel Satan in biblical terminology.

Yazidis say they suffered massacres during the secular rule of Saddam Hussein.

In April, gunmen shot dead 23 Yazidi factory workers in Mosul in apparent retaliation for the stoning of a teenaged Yazidi girl several weeks earlier

Police said the girl had been stoned to death by local Yazidis after falling in love with a Muslim man and converting to Islam. Gruesome video of her killing was aired by television networks around the world.

This was already reported. However the reports conflict between aprox. 20 dead and at least 175 dead.

Something doesn’t add up. Both reports apparently refer to the same event (Yazidis blown up by fuel tankers).

AQ is doing their job of supplying talking points to the Democrats in Congress about the report on the surge due in September. Expect a lot of terror attacks in the coming weeks. AQ can lose on the ground, but win in the press.

I’m thinking the same, however the article doesn’t refers to the bridge bobing you mentioned, but to an attack on Yazidis near Mosul. This attack (including the details such as fuel tankers etc.) was reported by others aswell, however they all have casualty figures at aprox. 20 dead.
I concur that unless we get real confirmation Reuters is (again) using vastly exaggerated numbers.

No. Mosul is Iraqi territory. It’s however close to Kurdish authonomy territory. There are also many Kurds in Mosul. This is the border area with blended populations.

The MORE the Dems push for a pull-out, the MORE the media supports them, the less the public backs the war, the MORE the nutjobs over there smell victory and the more outrageous and aggressive they will become.

Al Qaeda’s idea of a surge: murder as many random victims as possible. This isn’t why they will win. This is why they must be stopped.

We are half way through the month before “the report” and the civilian death toll is coming in at about a 30% decrease with the US troop death is equal to last month, a 9 month low, so the media is performing their own surge to pump up the numbers knowing that about half the civilian death toll can’t be confirmed.

Killing 27 Yazidis with 3 suicidal fuel tankers just means that the Yazidis said “No” to joining Al Qaeda, triggering said attack.

Killing 27 when their press release was to claim 250 killed just goes to show how much Al Qaeda depends on the news media...

BBC has it as 30

At least 30 people have been killed in a series of suicide bomb attacks carried out by insurgents across Iraq.
Most of them died in a co-ordinated series of blasts apparently targeting a Kurdish religious minority in north-western Iraq.

Ten others were killed when a bridge in northern Baghdad was destroyed by a suicide blast.

Al-Qaeda’s only survival is the media, which the media is more than happy to help, because they can’t win in the real war.
