A First Lady’s No-Show Is Seen as a No-No ( SARKOZY )
The New York Times ^ | August 14, 2007 | DOREEN CARVAJAL

Posted on 08/14/2007 5:53:36 PM PDT by Cincinna

Three weeks ago, Cécilia Sarkozy, the glamorous wife of the French president, drew criticism here for her high-profile role in the freeing of jailed medical workers from Libya, a job some thought was best left to diplomats. Now Mrs. Sarkozy, a 49-year-old former model, is under scrutiny again, this time for ducking out of public appearances where a presidential spouse would be expected.

Her latest infraction of spousal etiquette: skipping a picnic with the Bush family in New England.

After accepting a rare, personal invitation to dine with President Bush and his family in Kennebunkport, Me., on Saturday, Mrs. Sarkozy stayed behind with her children at a luxury rental house in New Hampshire. She left it to her husband, President Nicolas Sarkozy, to meet the Bush clan and offer her regrets.

At a news conference, the French president explained that his wife had a severe sore throat. But a day later, newspapers in France started sniping, marveling at the first lady’s miraculous recovery.

(SNIP) Even Le Figaro, a right-leaning daily ordinarily supportive of the conservative president, took note of Mrs. Sarkozy’s swift reappearance on Sunday, when the first lady took a stroll in shorts and a T-shirt in the company of two friends.

Heading right into a popularity meltdown.

When a French newspaper hires an MD to give an expert opinion on Cecilia's lame excuse you know there is big trouble.

"The French daily Le Parisien pointed out that Mrs. Sarkozy was seen the day after the lunch shopping with two friends in Wolfeboro, N.H. With the help of a medical expert, the newspaper calculated how long a severe sore throat would ordinarily last. The conclusion: Her malady had not been serious, certainly not serious enough to stand up a world leader."

WHAT CECILIA SARKOZY MISSED

CECILIA SARKOZY

A spoiled dilettante who once stated the role of First Lady would bore her. A woman who prefers to lunch and chat with Mohamar Khaddafi rather than with two American Presidents, their lovely wives, their children, and grandchildren, a privilege rarely accorded an outsider, let alone a foreigner.

Actually, IIRC, their relationship was the matter of some speculation during the French elections. I think she likes the prestige of being the French First Lady more than she likes Sarko. But Sarko knew he could never be elected in the midst of a bitter divorce. There will be more of these embarrassing moments and Sarko will do the best he can with them.

YAWN!

We know exactly waht this is, coming from the New York Times. They want to create a rift between Republicans and Sarkozy. They don’t like France in bed with the Right even one iota so they have been on a harassment campaign of Sarkozy from the first moment he took office.

Wow, talk about awkward, there are the Bushes, two Presidents among them, and there is Nicholas Sarkozy all alone.

I actually feel sort of bad for Sarko on this one, a family spat is awkward to begin with, a family spat published on the world stage can only be worse with cameras rolling.

And what is worse, the Sarkozy’s vacation in America must have sucked, between the rude paparazzi ruining that boating outing, and his wife bailing out on him...damn...

For her to not go, while the president of France says he is pro US and France is an alli of the US, to have lunch with 2 US presidents at their private home is bad and a political statement against her husband. But the only real story in this is he married the wrong woman.

Perhaps the "sore throat" excuse is a polite way of saying "PMS"?

Who knows, who cares, much ado about nothing.

There could be any number of reasons why she didn't want to come along, or was told or asked not to.

France has been run by a "right-wing" government since 1995. Of course, to the French, anyone to the right of Karl Marx is a "conservative".

Interesting that Sarkorzy's kids didn't show up either, leaving Sarko himself all alone with the entire Bush clan. If the matter only involved France's first lady having a hissy fit, one would think Sarko would at least bring his boy "Louis" and the rest of the family (minus wifey) to put on the appearance of a family gathering with Bush.

Methinks Sarko's "friendship" to the U.S. is just an act, but we'll see. Let me know when the cheese-eating surrender monkey's stop doing everything in their power to thwart America on the world stage and embarrass us at the UN. Vicente Fox's close "friendship" with Bush turned out to be an act too. Vicente Fox never lifted a finger to support Bush on any policy. Fox's friend was a one way street. I shake your hand in photo-ops, Jorge, and you give me what I want.

It is a possibility. But if it is she should make an strong apology. I doubt she will. What she did was an insult to 2 US presidents and the president of France. A sore throat wasn’t a good excuse. She needs to be left out of the picture. It was embarrassing to the president of France. After she did this it is better not to refer to them as a marriage.

I never had any thought that he would be an unquestioning supporter of US world policy. But the fact that he is Jewish or has Jewish blood leads to believe he will be better than Chirac. His first duty is to France, not the US. I am hoping the US and France form stronger ties. We’ll have to wait and see.

In 2005, Sarkozy’s wife had an affair with Richard Attias, an advertising executive. This was fairly recent, just 2 years ago, but Sarkozy forgave her. I’m sure a lot of other men would have reacted differently.

What I do not understand is why his wife refused to vote in the French elections? And then on election night when her husband was celebrating the election victory, she refused to go to the party, until her 2 daughters convinced to go. So she went around 11pm election night, flying in from London at the last minute. And then when she showed up ,she was inappropriately attired it was reported, looking bored and withdrawn.

What is her problem?

Well, psychological problems or personality disorders, we’ve all seem to have one or the other to a degree sometime or other in our lives. Hers seems to be more along the immature lines though. I have a daughter who didn’t grow up until she was in her forties, so there’s hope for Madame Sarkozy, right? :)

I have to disagree.

The NY Times, and the American media in general has been very kind to Cecilia. She is taking a whooping in the French Press. They are all over her.

After going to Libya and returning with the Bulgarian nurses, Cecilia had so much good will going. Being rude and snarky to the Bush family made all that evaporate.

This is not bashing Mrs. Sarkozy. She brought this all on herself by inventing a phony ailment and standing up President Bush and his family.

I feel very sorry for Nicolas Sarkozy. Especially since they have a 10 year old son who surely would have been thrilled meeting two American Presidents, and getting all that attention.

When you are a public figure, as Cecilia has made herself by taking a high profile role, and you want to represent your husband, and as well the French Government, there is a certain level of decorum expected.

Snubbing the Bush family on the one hand, and lunching with Khaddafi has made a lot of people very uncomfortable.

I totally agree with you.

Nicolas Sarkozy showed up, embarassed, without his wife and without his son. Cecilia called an hour before to cancel; he did the right thing and went alone.

Sarko is a professional, and a real leader. He respects the office of the President of the United States, as well as the men who occupy it. He seems to have had a wonderful time, and felt very much at ease and at home.

Building personal relationships between the leaders is very important. Nothing should interfere with that.

Exactly. She is the French version of Donna Hanover... a very minor celebrity who married a powerful man, refused to campaign for him, didn’t vote for him, and then went on to star in morally objectionable plays runs by the Far Left.

Wants all the perks of celebrity and power, but really roots for the other side.

Would you have gotten a doctor to fix you up, or would you have stood up the President of the United States?

I’m guessing you would have gone, no matter how badly you felt.

To an American, being too sick to fulfill a committment means you are really sick, running a high fever, and confined to bed by your doctor; you should probably be in the hospital. To the French, especially these bourgeois, poorly brought up women, the smallest malaise means you can get out of anything you would prefer not to do.
