WAYNE, N.J. -- An actor who once played a lieutenant on NBC's "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" has been charged with possession of child pornography, authorities said Tuesday.

Albert Insinnia, 57, of Bloomfield, turned himself into the Passaic County Sheriff's Department in Wayne on Monday and was released on bail Tuesday morning, said sheriff's spokesman Bill Maer.

Insinnia was charged with two counts of possession of child pornography after authorities allegedly discovered 180 images of child porn on the hard drive of the actor's laptop computer.Your Ad Here

Reached at his home Tuesday afternoon, Insinnia told The Associated Press he had no comment, but his lawyer, Joseph Portelli, said he planned to plead not guilty at an arraignment Tuesday afternoon.

"I understand what he's been charged with, but I do have to say that based on my conversations with him and the authorities involved, I sincerely believe he's not guilty," said Portelli, who mentioned that his client also works as a real estate agent.

According to Portelli, the hard drive on Insinnia's computer has been transferred various times in the last few years and a variety of people have had access to it.

"Any images that may have been on that computer are not his," Portelli said, adding that there are no allegations that his client purchased or sold any of the images.

The sheriff's department has not ruled out additional charges for Insinnia and its investigation is ongoing, Maer said.

"If you exploit a child in Passaic County, you will be hunted down and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," Passaic County Sheriff Jerry Speziale said in a statement.

The investigation began after Insinnia took his computer to a Best Buy electronics store in West Paterson for repairs. A technician found the images, police said, and alerted a police detective working security at the store.

According to his biography on a Web site for the film "Over the GW," Insinnia has been acting for more than 30 years. He's appeared on Broadway and played Lt. Pizelli on a couple episodes of "Law and Order: Special

Ah, the "these are not my pants" excuse.

Then how does he maintain his image?

Waiting for certain people here to attempt to implicate Fred Thompson in this by association...

He and Pete Townsend are doing research for their upcoming Broadway rock opera Pedophenia.

Well, as a potential president he should get use to it, after all everything negative that happens in the Universe is Bush’s fault … and if voters are smart … soon, everything will be Thompson’s fault.

If that hard drive has been transferred between several people and those images were found in a cache or tmp file, and that’s all they had on him, I’d vote to acquit.

I'm suprised that Hollywood isn't cheering the guy.

I mean, they give Roman Polanski awards even though he drugged, raped, and sodomized a girl, and is living as a fugitive from justice in France.

It should be pretty easy to determine. Every file is date stamped when it is saved onto a computer and every time it is viewed. It is a simple matter to establish a timeline in most cases.

Me too. But would you ever share a hard drive? I wouldn't share mine.

It depends. If it is a Windows operating systems like XP, then the cache or temp folder will most likely be associated with a particular user profile. And as I said in another post, it is a fairly straight-forward process to determine when the files were saved to the hard drive and to determine if and when a particualr user has viewed them.

I'm wondering if it's one that belonged to the company.

Laptop hard drives can be hard to remove and replace, but you would think they would at least format the drive and re-install...

That's a point.

The prosecution would still have to show it wasn't related to a rootkit or spam for me to start overcoming reasonable doubt, though. I'd be thinking of that teacher up in New England.

Unless, they didn't want to lose software for which they *lost* the installation disks.
