IDF uncovers tunnel leading from Gaza to Israel

Army says underground tunnel leading to Israel uncovered near hothouse used to grow tomatoes in northern Strip. According to estimates, tunnel slated to explode under Israeli target. Southern Command: There may be additional tunnels.

The IDF on Tuesday uncovered an underground tunnel leading from the Gaza Strip towards Israel, the army said Wednesday. The tunnel shaft was connected to a Gaza hothouse used to grow tomatoes and situated 700 meters from the border fence.

IDF sources noted that a terror attack was foiled by uncovering the tunnel. According to estimates, Palestinians planned to use the tunnel in order to smuggle explosives and bomb them under an Israeli military or civilian target.

The army was also looking into the possibility that the tunnel was slated to be used to smuggle terrorists into Israel.

The tunnel was uncovered after the army received military intelligence. A generator which had apparently been used to assist in the dig was also found in the area.

Southern Command officials estimated that terror organizations continue to dig different tunnels from the Gaza Strip toward Israel, using technological means.

"It is possible such tunnels are already ready and that terror activists are waiting to receive an order to use them. We must not forget that (IDF soldiers) Gilad Shalit was kidnapped by terrorists who entered Israel through a tunnel.

"The uncovering of the tunnel in the northern Strip illustrates just how important the military activity near the fence in recent months is and how significant it is in thwarting terror attacks," army officials said

I have a dumb question...

is there’s seismic equipment that can detect digging under ground?

For once colour me underwhelmed with the IDF. During the stalemate on the Western front in WW I there was a constant battle between tunnelers from both sides. Even then the technique was available to listen for digging under ground.
Counter tunnels were dug and exploded.

Shouldn’t it be possible with modern technology for the Israelis to counter the Hamas’ “moles” without endangering any IDF soldiers, or?

Sure, and there is ground penetrating radar, and a version of sonar, both of which can detect tunnels.

Or flooded when its full.

I kinda like the idea of letting ‘em waste their time & energy digging it then dismantling it when it gets close to completion.

Watch and wait. When the time is right flood the tunnel with chlorine gas or ammonia. It is a very horrible death.
A few might even survive a little while until they drown in their own fluids in their lungs.

"...Build an outhouse over the hole..."

Wouldn't do any good. These people live in sh*t - camel-sh*t, horse-sh*t, goat-sh*t, sheep-sh*t, and their own-sh*t!

When Israel gave them Gaza, they broke the sewage treatment plant so it exploded, and they literally drowned in their own-sh*t.

It would be a good idea to pump sh*t into the tunnels, though ................... FRegards
