The jury has reached a verdict in the Jose Padilla trial. It will be read shortly after 2 p.m.

I do recall that. I don’t know, but you think that someone would have picked up on that by now.

Errr...wouldn’t they?

For the past several years, like a person with a mental health problem, I would blurt out on Jose Padilla threads “He is John Doe number 2 or his twin and NOBODY says anything!”. It is sooooo twilight zone it freaks me out. And, even though you post this, the denial is so deep it still amazes me.

CNN’s spin

“The CIA recovered the al Qaeda “mujahedeen data form” that is central in the case in Afghanistan after the U.S. invasion in late 2001. It contains seven of Padilla’s fingerprints, one of his alleged Muslim alias names, his true birthday, notes the applicant’s ability to speak English, Spanish and Arabic and has other identifying details.

But there was little other hard evidence linking Padilla, a Muslim convert, to al Qaeda or to the alleged North American terror support cell prosecutors say was operated by Hassoun, Jayyousi and others. Thousands of hours of FBI wiretap intercepts from 1993 to 2001 include numerous conversations of Hassoun and Jayyousi, but Padilla’s voice is heard on only seven.”

Maybe seven hours is all he needed. A person can say A LOT in seven hours and CNN uses the word "only" to describe seven hours, like it's insignificant or something.

Just how much hard evidence to you need unless you’re trying a case in D.C. or downtown L.A.?

Maybe seven hours is all he needed.

It only took the left 18-1/2 minutes to convict Nixon, with nothing on it.

They had to throw out just about all the info against Padilla because NCIS (?) (Naval Cid) “forgot” to read him his rights.

I don’t think there’s a necessity for the military to read rights to a military-based capture.

In my experience, seven hours in a jury room is nothing. I suspect they took an initial vote to get a sense of where everyone was at and were pretty close from the start. The document is pretty damning hard evidence. I’ve been handed less as a juror.

I think “seven” refers to conversations not hours.

Terry Nichols' ex-wife's last name is Padilla. Any relation to José Padilla?

No Relation to Nichols Ex-Wife

One misconception fueling the initial interest in Padilla as a candidate for John Doe 2 was his surname. Terry Nichols, McVeigh's accomplice in the OKC plot, had an ex-wife named Lana Padilla, a resident of Las Vegas, NV. Nichols and Padilla had an amicable relationship and shared a son, Josh.

Interviewed in 2002, Lana Padilla said she was not aware of any relation to Jose Padilla. Lana Padilla's surname came from a former marriage. There is no evidence to suggest that Leonard Padilla, Lana's ex-husband, is related to Jose Padilla in any way. Lana Padilla continues to aver that she believes there was a John Doe 2 (an argument which supports the legal position of her ex-husband, currently facing a potential death sentence in an Oklahoma trial).

Good post. Plus, where are all the Iraqis that lived in OK City then? I know of two of them busted at Logan in '03.
