CHEBARKUL, Russia (Reuters) - Troops from Russia, China and Central Asian states will take part in a joint military exercise on Friday designed to show off their alliance's increasing power.
About 6,500 troops, mainly from Russia and China, will take part. Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan are also SCO members.
Russia has fought two wars against Muslim separatists in its Chechnya region since 1994, China says it has been combating Muslim Uighur rebels in its most westerly province and Uzbekistan says it has had to combat Islamist militants.
The Russian commander in charge of the exercise, General Vladimir Moltenskoi, said on Thursday it would help SCO member countries fight both international and "internal terrorists".
