More on one man's quest to become Commander in Chief - and his son's lack of service

Why-- is his son running for something?

Has anyone at the NYT’s asked Hillary why Chelsea isn’t serving in the military since she voted for the war?! I didn’t think so.

We have a child that is active duty, my husband was a veteran. It is a personal decision to join the military, and if Mitt had 20 sons and not one enlisted, that is their business.

Last time I checked, having children in the military was not a requirement to being CIC,

BTW, I am not a Romney fan.

Missionary work is not the same as military work!

no-—today you cannot pressure them into doing anything and i’m sure his family is NO different
but
what were they talking about as a family in regard to the attack on the WTC,islamofascism, threats to America, etc ?
any talk at all ?

My kids are first generation Americans so maybe we see things diferently ?
we took 911 a little personally.

Nancy Lessin, co-founder of Military Families Speak Out, an antiwar group

NANCY LESSIN: There are so many that have bought into what this administration is trying to sell, which is in order to be patriotic, in order to support the troops, you have to support the war. It is absolutely possible to support the troops and oppose the war. NO, IT ISN'T!!!

******

So, according to her, everyone is stupid but her. These grown men and women are very capable of deciding for themselves what THEY WANT TO DO without her 'help'!!!

I am a Duncan Hunter supporter BUT King Vanity is supporting Mitt.

So along with him I keep an ear and eye open and I notice alot of anti Mitt smearing already starting.

BTW FYI Salvation/Oregon Ping I was looking at the Presidential donation in Oregon for all candidates (Dems too) and on the GOP list it was 90% Mitt.

By jove, you’ve got it. IF he wanted to be CIC he should have forced his sons into military service to advance his own resume........ /sarcasm

While I admired Duncan Hunter’s service and his son’s.......I did not exclude Bush because he only served in the national guard.

I agree with you. There is a nobility and unspoken praise for parents whose children would choose to serve in the military - like Hunter’s. Altho it’s the individual’s choice, parents do impart something into the decision process.

GO HUNTER!

'only served in the national guard'.

What is 'only'? The National Guard is part of the United States Military.

If you were to listen in entirety to the clip where Romney made this statement (see Aug 8th audio clip on Hugh Hewitt’s blog), you would hear that the oft-quoted statement was a quip at the end of a lengthy reply regarding the nature of our all volunteer military. When heard in context it did not come across as it has been reported in the MSM. Yes, he did issue an apology, because the statement when isolated from his full reply did make him look bad.

Man you are so right. If I felt the way I do today 20 yrs ago. i may have taken a different path. all I can do now is regret having not served in any capacity.

No, Cal. A decent, clean-cut, no-nonsense, puissant image is not the same thing as wisdom and greatness. In fact, the two can be quite different.

Like using the family name to make a lot of money?

Past precedent would certainly favor it.

Altho it’s the individual’s choice, parents do impart something into the decision process.

Well, there's part of the answer. If the parents don't seem to respect the military as a viable career option, or think military service is an important component of patriotism, I think the children are less likely to serve.

In the same vein, one might ask if each of Romney's sons served as Mormon missionaries - and why? or why not?

I think parental expectations and values would influence both of those decisions.
