If they ever heard of him. He's still not getting any traction.
My brother re-enlisted within days of 9/11. I know of 3 young men who this past year who joined the Marines. Of the four, 2 had graduated from college, one left college where he had an academic scholarship, the fourth was out of HS for a year. Not one enlisted for the benefits. Some people have a hard time believing that there are true patriots and warriors, that are selfless. Especially in this me, me, me society. My sons are in their teens, still in HS and there are quite a few who plan to join the military. My own son goes back and forth with it. And we are NOT poor, ignorant southern white folks with no opportunities.
I was drafted, 1967-69 don’t remember missing out on anything be cause of it. VC certainly didn’t care!
Give a man enough rope and he will hang himself every time.
Debating? Perhaps it could be called sanctimonious navel gazing.
If this is a question that any parent should be asked, then maybe every parent in America should be required to answer. But it’s a dumb question because so few do serve in the military these days, and actually, only a few can.
There are about 1.6 million now serving in the military. Each year about 4 million kids are born, and about four million turn 18 and start careers or further their education. Of the four million, the military barely needs 200,000 recruits each year (if that).
Since so few Americans do, or even could serve in the military, this is just a cheap question asked of some candidates, but not others.
And the next time you hear someone singing the praises of mandatory national service, ask just what productive use they’d make of four million eighteen year-olds per year?
That’s funny you say that because I have been following Duncan Hunter’s campaign for quite some time and I felt he hardly mentioned his sons service or his own. When his son announced his campaign and then was called back up, that was when I noticed he mentioned it more but not enough to be exploitive. He is in the same position as many parents who have a child fighting. Besides that, it shows that his son was raised with a great love for this country, a love and pride for the USA that would compel him to put his life on the line for it. Just as there is a special place for the ones that serve, I hold a special place for the parents who raised such great men and women.
Serving in the military has never been a requisite for president, but it does show character.
Teddy Roosevelt lost a son in WWI. Joe Kennedy lost one in WWII. All of FDR's sons fought. Bush Sr. fought. No longer is that true.
The change so worries George Friedman (founder of Stratfor) that he concludes his book on the current war with:
"The weakness of the U.S., is not our soldiers, nor their numbers, but the vast distance that separates American leaders from those who fight. From government officials to media moguls to finance powerbrokers, few members of the leadership class have children who are at war. To them, the soldiers are alien, people they have never met and don't understand....A ruling class that sends the children of others to fight, but not their own, cannot sustain its power for very long...."
They are better than us old vet's don't you know!
Good post.
Commander in Chief is the highest level position in our government.
It is insane for people to think that no prior military experience is ok for the position to run the military.
It is also disrespectful to our troops.

Our Founders were insane?
SHOW me where in the Constitution there exists a requirement for military service in order to hold the Presidency?
You disrespect the country, who the troops are fighting for, by disregarding the Constitution.
>>>SHOW me where in the Constitution there exists a requirement for military service in order to hold the Presidency?
Did I quote the Constitution? Than don’t ask for a cite.
Nathan,
Thank you for your service. I agree with your post.
best,

Perhaps you should re-write your own Constitution with a requirement for military service for Presidential candidates.
And what do you call your new country?
USA
Get back to me when you you’re running the campaign for a Constitutional amendment...I’ll consider it at that time.
