Love at First Sight for Jenna's Guy (White House Wedding Looks Likely)
US News and World Report ^ | August 19, 2007 12:04 PM ET | Washington Whispers

Love at First Sight for Jenna's Guy

Laura Bush may have thought the two were just flirts years ago, but first daughter Jenna's fiancé, Henry Hager, felt it was love at first sight. "He knew when they started going out," says one pal, "that she was 'the one.'"

While no date is set, advisers suggest that a White House wedding could be the big society event the first lady has always longed to do but couldn't because the prez is [said to be] a party pooper.

Paul Bedard says Jenna probably feels the tug of Texas, but this may be the last time for first lady Laura Bush to put her mark on the East Wing.

A “White House Wedding” and all the publicity it would generate would send the Dems into a tailspin.

NewsMax: Talk to us about White House weddings. How many have there been?

Wead: Well, nine presidential children have been married in the White House, but all together there have been 17, including one president, Grover Cleveland. Two other presidents were married outside the White House during their time in office, John Tyler and Woodrow Wilson.

Tyler’s wedding took place in New York City to a bride 30 years his junior and she became the first lady for the last eight months of his presidency.

NewsMax: And do the children of presidents usually get married in the White House?

Wead: Usually, but many have been married outside the White House during their father’s presidency and some of these were spectacular social events. Fanny Hayes was married in Ohio; her father, President Hayes, had died but the sitting president William McKinley was in attendance, as well as his Cabinet. All came in on the president’s train.

The wedding of Luci Baines Johnson was a national social event, even though it took place at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington. And the small, private wedding of Julie Nixon, shortly after her own father had won the presidency, to Dwight David Eisenhower II, himself the grandson and namesake of a president, prompted widespread public interest and curiosity.

Dorothy Bush, daughter and sister to two presidents was the only presidential child married at Camp David.

NewsMax: Jenna Bush is marrying a former aide to the president. Is that common?

Wead: Very common, like the rest of us, they marry whomever is around. Presidential sons and daughters have fallen in love with White House or congressional staffers and, in more recent times, military aides or secret service agents assigned to protect them.

Eleanor “Nellie” Wilson married Secretary of the Treasury William McAdoo, thus overnight becoming a Cabinet officer’s wife in her father’s own administration. You can understand how that became a huge story. Dorothy Bush, who is both a daughter and sister of a president, married a congressional aide of the opposing political party.

NewsMax: Do the presidents and first ladies worry about someone taking advantage?

Wead: Very much. It’s hard to trust newcomers into the power orbit. What are their motives? Quite a few of the earlier presidential children from Maria Hester Monroe to Betsy Harrison married their own first cousins.

President Grant came into the White House with a beautiful teenage daughter, determined to keep her away from the boys, so he sent her to Europe. She fell in love with an English aristocrat onboard the ship.

In fact there were two presidential daughters who fell in love on ocean cruises while their father served in office. Both had spectacular weddings and both husbands turned out to be womanizers and alcoholics.

NewsMax: Are there traditions that govern these events are there any rules to a White House wedding?

Wead: Oh yes; it is very complicated, a convergence of society, power, and politics. One interesting tradition holds that you must invite the last bride of the last White House wedding, thus Maria Monroe was at the wedding of Elizabeth Tyler who attended the wedding of Nellie Grant who attended the wedding of Alice Roosevelt who attended the wedding of Tricia Nixon.

Lynda Bird Johnson was missed. So expect to see Tricia Nixon invited to the Jenna Bush wedding or see the chain broken.

NewsMax: What is so interesting, is how complex these love stories are. I suppose the Jenna Bush-Henry Hager story is just as interesting, and in time we will hear about it.

Wead: Well, the first White House wedding was marred by murder. And the second was very complex. John Adams II was married in a private ceremony in what is now called the Blue Room of the White House. His two brothers were in love with the same girl and refused to come. One had also been engaged to the bride and he committed suicide six months after the wedding.

But most of these stories are examples of love transcending power and greed. They are truly romantic love stories but yes, very complex.

I hope she has a WH wedding.

Truly that would be a memorable event for the entire family and close friends. I would only hope Bush is HIGHLY PARTISAN in their invitees - just as Demoncrats are. SNUB THEM DEMS ROYALLY.

“Scooter Libby as part of the wedding party would also get them frothing at the mouth.”

They’re already frothing at the mouth over the rumors she has a bun in the oven.

To be honest, I can kind of see it in some recent photos.

The wedding of Luci Baines Johnson was a national social event, even though it took place at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington.

Did Luci convert to marry a Catholic? I can't imagine she could have been married in a Catholic basilica otherwise ... The Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is the main church on the campus of Catholic University of America, in northwest Washington.

The summer of my DC internship, i lived in its shadow, in a dorm room at CUA. The church bells added pain to many a Sunday morning hangover. There are some good Irish pubs near CUA, but heed this advice -- don't try to keep up with the Jesuits where drinking is concerned. They are allowed only one vice, and they get very, very good at it. Nuns can hold their liquor, too.

I was pleased to see that announcement in the papers last week - the one I read had a fairly nice write-up but as it was filed by the L.A. Times - they could not resist putting in a tiny paragraph midway of Jenna’s antics and her trouble with the police a few years back.

What slugs - can’t even leave a young girl alone in the happiness of her moment in the sun.

I saw AP had put it in a number of other rags as well -

They'll start making noise about there never being a gay wedding in the White House, and how Jenna's wedding sends a message of hate.

Oh I know. I think they should do it at the WH. First Lady Laura Bush will have such wonderful help with that wedding. Now that whole Bush Family are a very private type family especially on things like this. But maybe they’ll forgo that aspect of themselves and have a grand WH wedding. Jenna will be such a beautiful bride.

Folks no longer have to convert to be married to a practicing Catholic in a Catholic Ceremony. The non-Catholic just has to agree to raise the children Catholic.

All they need to froth is the word “Bush.” I mentioned Jenna’s engagement to my receptionist, stating that the first WH wedding since Nixon would be cool. A new patient, checking in at the counter started ranting and didn’t stop for 10-15 minutes even though I’d gone back to my office to catch up on paperwork while waiting for her to be ready to see me.

No royal weddings, please. Have a nice private ceremony for family and close friends in Kennebunkport, or at the ranch in Crawford. I think ostentatious weddings are in bad taste, whether by private citizens or the President’s daughter.

As noted by other posters, she did. The marriage lasted, I think, about thirteen years and there were four children. The marriage was anulled by the Church. She has since remarried.
