Wal-Mart: Melamine Found in Dog Treats (Dog Treat Update)
Forbes.com ^ | August 21, 2007 | By Jon Gambrell - Associated Press

(LITTLE ROCK, ARK.) - Tests of two Chinese brands of dog treats sold at Wal-Mart stores found traces of melamine, a chemical agent that led to another massive pet food recall in March, a spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Wal-Mart quietly stopped selling Chicken Jerky Strips from Import-Pingyang Pet Product Co. and Chicken Jerky from Shanghai Bestro Trading in July, after customers said the products sickened their pets. Company spokeswoman Deisha Galberth said 17 sets of tests done on the products found melamine, a contaminant that's a byproduct of several pesticides.

"There were very small amounts of melamine found," Galberth told The Associated Press. "The amounts were so small the laboratory recommended more testing." More than 150 brands of pet food were recalled earlier this year after U.S. inspectors said wheat gluten from China that was used to make the food was tainted with melamine. An unknown number of dogs and cats died.

Since then, other Chinese products including tires, toothpaste, seafood, juice, and toys decorated with lead paint have been recalled or have come under scrutiny. Galberth said she couldn't say if the amount of melamine found in its dog treats would be enough to sicken or kill a dog that ate the suspect products. Philadelphia television station WPVI reported last week that a woman claimed her 2-year-old Chihuahua died after eating some of the products. The station reported that an autopsy found the dog died of an infection caused by toxic bacteria.

Galberth said the world's largest retailer would expand its testing of the jerky strips to see if tests detected melamine. A statement Tuesday by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said customers should be especially wary of jerky from Shanghai Bestro Trading with the UPC number 0087784900006 and item number 839751.

The Bentonville-based company has urged customers who bought one of the products to return it to the nearest store for a refund.

The Food and Drug Administration did not list the two products on its recall Web site Tuesday. As recently as 2005, the FDA blocked some pet treat imports from Pingyang Pet Product Co. because of contamination with salmonella.

Galberth said she was not aware of the FDA's previous concerns with Pingyang but said the company was working with the FDA and manufacturers. She said she did not immediately know where the Chinese companies were based.

Wal-Mart pulled the products from shelves July 26 and placed a computerized block on all cash registers to prevent workers from selling the products. Galberth said she did not know how many stores sold the treats.

"Generally, we won't do a pull-and-hold unless most stores are impacted," she said. "There's a high likelihood many of our stores would have been impacted by this one."

Pretty soon every Chinese restaurant will have to update their signage to read “No MSG, no Lead, and no Melamine!”

I was buying rawhide treats regularly from a dollar store for my two dogs, who are very unpicky eaters.

About four months ago my dogs suddenly began refusing to eat those rawhide treats.

I thought maybe I had gotten a bad batch so I bought some more.

They refused to touch them.

I buy Hartz now and they like them just fine.

I didn’t see a post on that yet.

“Wal-Mart quietly stopped selling...”

Why on earth are they doing this “quietly” rather than promptly and widely informing customers of the bad product so those people can avoid feeding product already bought to their pets? Wouldn’t people respect them more if they were forthright about it? Sheesh!

Nat'l brands made by Mars: Pedigree, Cesar, Sheba, Good Life Recipe, and Whiskas.

None of the above brands have been recalled (yet). Probably a good idea to stay tuned though.

Cripes - I just bought some dog bisquits yesterday. No I'm starting to wonder if even those are safe.

I vote that we ban all food items from China ASAP.

They removed the products and informed the public what products. It is up to the FDA to issue a recall. All WalMart can do is issue a prss release, which they did.

No, in my town I just couldn’t get the Bestros anymore (my dog’s absolute favorite)an I had no idea why. They didn’t tell the public anything. The first time I heard why I couldn’t get Bestros was here on FreeRepublic.

My lord that is scary. I am thinking about just making my my dogs treats from now on.

I found this recipe ...have any of you ever done homemade treats?

Peanut Butter Pooch Cookies

21/2 cups whole wheat flour

¼ cup white flour

¼ cup oatmeal

11/4 Tbsp baking powder

1 Tbsp honey

1 cup peanut butter

1 cup milk

Combine flour, oatmeal, and baking powder. Combine milk, peanut butter, and honey in a separate bowl and mix well. Stir peanut butter mixture into flour/oatmeal mixture. Knead dough and roll-out on floured surface to a quarter inch thickness. Cut out treats using a cookie cutter. Place aluminum foil on cookie sheet and bake in a 400 degree oven for approximately 15 minutes.
