Miners' families treated 'unconscionably'
KCPW ^ | August 23, 2007 | Staff

Families of six trapped miners in Huntington, Utah were treated "unconscionably" during the rescue effort, says Governor Jon Huntsman. Asked to elaborate, he would not point fingers directly: "The federal folks did everything they could, let me just put it that way," said Huntsman. "I'm not going to get into the mine owner, other than to say that I thought the way the families were treated was unconscionable, and I think they deserve better."

Give a whining liberal enough time AFTER THE FACT, and they will find everything could have been done better and differently. Of course they never seem to be around to offer their superior services and leadership during the crisis.

Utah were treated "unconscionably" during the rescue effort, says Governor Jon Huntsman.

Let the blame game begin. Politicians have no shame. They all have masters degrees in CYA.

That’s strong stuff. I thought the mine owner’s TV appearances were obvious PR fluff and that he should have kept his mouth shut and spent all his time with the rescue effort.

Far be it from me to say that mine owner Bob Murray should be horsewhipped, tarred, feathered, and run out of town on a rail. As governor, I don’t want to get into that.

I’m with you guys. The owner is pretty much a media whore who made bogus predictions and talked out his a$$. My wife made the comment that he would be exposed eventually.

These days, if somebody stubs their toe, they are instantly aggrieved and mortified and treated in a punitive way by society. Then the candlelight vigils start.

I understand that this was way more than that. But seems any time people can get the bully pulpit, they’re singin their lungs out.

Nothing could make things right for these people, except going back in time and stopping it from happening in the first place.

I know he spent a lot of time on TV and was certainly dramatic, but was there something he should have done that was not?

Sounds like he did as much as possible to locate these men, drilling five holes already, I believe. If there was more that could be done, why hasn’t someone else come forward offering another plan or solution? God knows our government and other companies certainly have the resources and would be there to take over if there was another way.

I think Hillary has a PhD.

A no win situation. Had he refused comment, he would have been excoriated, probably by the same people who are attacking now.

I live here in the SLC area and there's been non-stop coverage. When miners get trapped about 2,000 feet down there's not much that can be done. Last week when I heard that after 10 days they had dug only about 800 feet I told everyone at my work that the lawsuits were getting warmed up and that people would start to CYA in the next day or so. Sure enough, here it comes.

"But I'm not convinced, as just one observer, that every technology has been deployed and every methodology considered for recovering these bodies."

I wonder how much underground mining experience the good governor has.

I was told by a colleague today that there were no fatal mining accidents for years before 2001, but that since 2001 there has been at least one fatal accident a year...all because of the “Bushies” relaxing the safeguards so that the mining companies can make more money. So (as usual) it’s all Bush’s fault.

Didn't some consul general from Mexico also complain that enough wasn't being done? Everyone complains but no one offers any real solution. I believe those attempting the rescue were doing everything in their power to succeed. They know it could have been themselves down there.

he should have kept his mouth shut

From what I've read about the guy, he's never kept his mouth shut in his life. He has a reputation for being confrontational, especially with regulators. He's made enemies, so he'll be put under a microscope.

absolutely. The Left is trying to connect President Bush to this just like they did with Katrina. It’s already starting, what with the hearings and all.

John Roberts, now of CNN, was interviewing the mine owner at the beginning and asked him " What if they can't find them?".

At the time I thought it was a very dumb question, but it turned out to be quite prophetic.

Oh good grief. Almost as bizarre as the 9/11 conspiracies & Rosie’s “fire/steel” foolishness.Amazing the things people believe & pass on to others as if it were fact. Here’s a couple of links that sadly prove your colleague (who apparently is very unfamiliar with mining territory) wrong.

The colleague in question is very intelligent but very opinionated—and rabidly anti-Republican...hostile to all Republicans, but especially towards Bush. Useful sometimes for learning what the political junkies on the other side are thinking.

Is there any part of your colleague’s statement you can dispute?
