Minutemen were stifled
The Northwest Herald ^ | Friday, August 24, 2007 | editorial

Posted on 08/24/2007 9:03:57 AM PDT by chicagolady

An event by the Illinois Minuteman Project scheduled for Saturday has been canceled after the Crystal Lake Police Department demanded a $3,500 payment for security costs from the hotel where the event was to be held.

Regardless of how one feels about the Minutemen, the request by the police department is inappropriate. The Minutemen were planning to hold a private event on private property at the Holiday Inn in Crystal Lake. The supposed security need was for protesters – the McHenry County Peace Group – who were going to be on public property near the event.

On Thursday, a McHenry County judge ruled the Minutemen had violated their contract with the Holiday Inn because they had misrepresented themselves and did not provide proof of insurance. That was wrong and the Holiday Inn had every right to nullify the contract. However, the behavior of the Crystal Lake Police Department is a separate issue and one that deserves comment.

The stated reason for the security cost was that the peace group was going to be protesting the Minutemen along a busy road and therefore officers would be needed. That protest should not have been the responsibility of the Minutemen. Nor should it have been the financial responsibility of the Holiday Inn. Neither entity had any involvement in the peace group’s plans.

Wow! I am thankful for this editoial defending my group The Illinois Minuteman Project

When I read what the lawyers for the Holiday Inn wrote about me, I was in tears. Then my lawyer told me that what lawyers do to push their case.

They misrepresented what happened. I happen to value my integrity utmost. The lawyers said some nasty things about me and even said I was fraudulent.

Well folks it's not over yet. We have a contiueing court case in September.

The Lawyers of the Holiday Inn said then received undo pressure by the police of Crystal lake. They really had no other recourse!!

The Police chief told me that the POLICE asked the hotel to give the protesters a place on the hotel private property to protest. The Hotel said NO WAY!!

The pressure began.

Why did the cops not advocate for a free room for the Illinois Minuteman project to have Sheriff Daniel Beck give his seminar??

CL, you mention the hotel was correct in that you didn’t identify yourselves properly or provide proof of insurance. Can you explain this some more?

It seems if the hotel cancelled your contract the police issue is anti-climatic.

SOoooooo.....

The law of the [chicago-] land says that you have to "provide" access and security for your ideological adversaries as we exercise the constitutional rights of peaceful assembly?

I don't really remember reading that in school or college?!?

Are there letters/emails or other documents from the PD to the Holiday Inn??

Get a lawyer or advocate team...

Sue the city and the cops until they can't see straight...

JMHO...

Yes, something is missing here. In the past I have set up many forecast/hind-cast meetings (20-40 attendees) at Holiday Inns (and others)in various locations and never was asked for proof of insurance. Then of course no one was scheduling a protest action, except the attendees who found the meetings boring! LOL

I identified myself as Rosanna Pulido, they said I should have identified myself as Illinois Minuteman Project State Director.

They absolutely lied about insurance. THEIR CONTRACT does NOT state what coverage they wanted. I got 1 million dollars coverage. The clerck called me and said can you get that to me today? I said no I am at work. She said can you get it to me tommorrow by 12 noon? I said sure.

They are now saying after REPEATED requests I did not give them the policy. That is a lie!

We are starting a legal defense fund because I may have to pay for their attorneys, it says in the contract.

This is the same sort of Bravo Sierra pretense used by UCLA in
order to keep student Republicans from having events on campus.

Abortion (effectively INFANTICIDE), protesting animal experimentation,
promoting gay marriage, near-riot for a Hispanic-Latino department...
any liberal nut-burger cause is A-OK on the UCLA campus.
No extra charge for the liberals invading campus!!!

Bring some rational folks to talk conservative politics on campus...
That's gonna' cost you!

Heaven knows what they teach in schools now.

I wish them luck with their suit. It would seem a slam-dunk were it not for the fruit-loops that pass for judges nowadays.

Please be careful about what you post here.

You have identified yourself on this website by name and you have an ongoing court case.

I suggest that you reply to people by Freepmail ONLY, and ONLY to those Freepers who have been here for a year or longer.

I’m rather angry over this. I look forward to any updates or related news articles that you are able to provide.

Did you identify this as a MM meeting? Was it just a meeting or was they some kind of public activism involved?

It would be unusual for them to include an insurance clause if they did not know it was MM or if it was just a general meeting. It is also unusual that once they felt the need for an insurance policy that they didn’t disclose the amount they required up front.

Did you eventually send them a copy of your policy? IF so you would have the fax documentation. Did you drop it off in person?

Was the meeting canceled due to the hotel or the cops?

I don’t see how the police could charge you any fees for holding an event on private property, if the need for security was due to the counter protesters on public property they should have got the fees from them. I also don’t see how a contract could enforce a “pay my legal fees” clause without an arbitration clause.

Personally, this doesn’t sound like the mountain I’d want to die on. Better to rip off a few nasty letters to hotel management and the police dept. asking for explanations and move on.

Lot’s of other hotels.

I've set up events at hotels before as well, and I've never been asked for proof of insurance from any of them.
