This regiment started out in 1862 as the Three Rivers Regiment. It was originally raised as a militia regiment. (A militia regiment is a reserve force regiment)
It went through several name changes. During WWII it was officially became the "12th Armoured (Three Rivers Regiment)". In 1968 it became "12e Régiment blindé du Canada" and its Trois-Rivières reserve force became "12e Régiment blindé du Canada (Milice)", both having the same military heritage.
