That's why police are trained to kill these days

Oh PLEASE! That's such a load of bovine excrement! They, and anyone who's got the least little bit of sense, train to shoot at center of mass. Plain and simple.

Of course, if you're of a mind that all cops are nothing more than homicidal maniacs, just waiting to pull their weapons on you and send you on to meet your maker, you're free to do so.

The only way two trained adult deputies could be scared of a 16 yo with a letherman is if they are cowards.

At 16 I stood 6'2" tall and weighed in at 190 pounds. Even had a "real" mustache and had no problem walking into a bar and ordering a beer in MO, a "21 year old" state. And I was not the biggest or oldest looking kid in my class. There were at least 10 other guys in my class who looked as old or older than I did, and even more that were my size or larger.

Just because he was 16 means nothing. And being armed with a knife makes him a danger, it doesn't make the cops "cowards."

You may be right about those two deputies, but you weren't addressing the remark from the article which you cited:
the deputies placed their own lives at risk,
Perhaps a better choice for the police in that circumstance:
Quick and effective IMO, for "two trained adult deputies", and less risky to bystanders.

A-MEN! I am personally sick of wasting valuable public resources on domestic squabbles.

Most police hate going on domestic calls more than any other. The parties are unpredictable and hyper-emotional, the situation is rarely one in which they can feel confident of what is truly transpiring, and they often cannot make an arrest (and quickly get things stabilized) because there may be no evidence or accusations of physical contact.

but this kid was wielding a leatherman OK technically a knife but barely .

A knife with a 3" blade is every bit as deadly as one with a 4" or 6" blade. Remember September 11, 2001? Those planes were taken, and it seems a number of people killed with box cutters, which have less than 1" of blade exposed.

I believe two competently trained deputies should be able to take down a “slight” 16 yo without gunfire

Hard to say. Please note that they had already tried using non-lethal means. Have you ever been in a fight? I've been in a few, two with "slightly built" people. They kicked my ass.

Well there is no telling what was in the minds of the deputies, but there IS no question that Jeremiah Chass got to meet his Maker sooner than he expected, eh?

i.e., "don't bring a knife to a gun fight"

They ought to just shoot the perp with a tranquilizer dart. Safer for everyone.

That's shoot to kill. They are also trained to shoot many rounds and if one partner starts shooting they all do so one officers judgment can't be called into question. This is pretty new though. I wish there were old newspapers from say the 1950s to read and search on the web. You'd read about warning shots, something unheard of these lawyer days. It's almost like there's a leftist conspiracy to keep old politically incorrect family newspapers from being searchable on the web. So much socialist folly depends on not being able to pull up and link to a story from the past.

This is so apples to oranges.

Comparing unexpecting stewardesses to trained police officers

Have you ever been in a fight? I've been in a few, two with "slightly built" people. They kicked my ass.

But were you sober at the time   /just kidding

My belief is that two well trained police officers should be able to take down almost all 16 yo without resorting to lethal force

I’m sorry, I wasn’t too complete with the story. They are long since divorced but she continues to manage to mess with his life, their lives and our lives on a month-to-month basis. The boys are 18 and 21 now and no longer have any contact with her. She still gets in one of her moods and tries to make trouble, but we’ve been able to teach the boys that the problem is with their mom, not with them. I am confident they will get over the whole thing and go on to live nearly normal lives, but it was touch and go there for a lot of years.

re: call 911 with some wild stories.

And the poor law enforcement guy who has to respond has no idea who’s telling the truth. One mistake and it can cost him his life or his career. My son is still with a sheriff’s office but is a helicopter pilot and says that if he had had to stay on the street he would have been out of it by now. He has the greatest job in the world, boy do I envy him!

I have had to disarm many guys, knives, handgun, rifle, and a nut with two sawed off cue sticks, doing some kind of karate stuff in Mission Beach.

Everything I have had to do, I did alone, unarmed, without backup, sometimes intervening in somebody else’s bar fight when it looked like one of them was going to be killed.

Since policeman are at work and represent the authority of the state, I don’t expect them to engage in hand to hand combat with all these cases, but it would be nice to see them accept a little risk occasionally in disarming a lightly armed citizen.

I’m surprised that some cops when confronted with a low risk situation, don’t use it for the simple adrenaline rush.

“”For the record I HAVE faced down bats, knives, razors and once a meat-cleaver. I am not a cop and I didn’t call cops.”””

LOL, I just now read your post after I made post 53.

It sounds like we share some traits, and possibly a different sense of fun (and obligation), than other people.

Somebody videotapes you using a baton, and if you are lucky, you’ll just lose your job. A clean shooting is going to be more legally defensible than a few swats with a baton.

COM is shoot to disable - and shoot at what you are most liekly to hit. It is most definitely NOT shoot to kill. Some of us are NOW being trained for headshots (more difficult) because of homicide bombers and the need to totally trash the nervous system right away.

They are also trained to shoot many rounds and if one partner starts shooting they all do so one officers judgment can't be called into question. This is pretty new though.

Not in my training three - four years ago.

Warning shots are against the sheriff' office SOP in my county. Bullets shot into the air tend to come down somewhere. Bullets shot into the ground tend to bounce. Warning shots are dangerous.

I go into an encounter with her telling myself I am not going to fall for her trick again, but after just a few minutes a lifetime in prison for murder seems to be a good trade off for ridding the world of this person!

What a sad and tragic situation for your family, but dang! that line was funny.
