Iraqi PM lashes out at Clinton, other U.S. critics(Good for him)

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki hit back on Sunday at Democratic presidential hopeful Senator Hillary Clinton and other U.S. critics who have called for him to be replaced, telling them "to come to their senses."

Maliki is under mounting pressure from officials in Washington to show political progress towards reconciling his majority Shi'ite Muslim sect and minority Sunni Arabs. U.S. officials are frustrated by the negligible progress so far.

Clinton and fellow Democratic Senator Carl Levin, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, have called for Maliki to be voted out because of his failure to find a political solution to Iraq's bitter sectarian violence.

"There are American officials who consider Iraq as if it were one of their villages, for example Hillary Clinton and Carl Levin," Maliki told a news conference.

"This is severe interference in our domestic affairs. Carl Levin and Hillary Clinton are from the Democratic Party and they must demonstrate democracy.

"I ask them to come back to their senses and to talk in a respectful way about Iraq."

Democrats in Congress have criticized President George W. Bush's Iraq policy and called for U.S. troops to begin pulling out as soon as possible.

Bush offered renewed support for Maliki last week but acknowledged that many were frustrated by the lack of political progress towards national reconciliation.

You also have forgotten that the war is the continuation of the first Gulf war

You are completely ignoring that Syria and Iran are neighbors to Iran

MEANING that a little interference in domestic affairs in a place like Iraq isn’t neccessarily a bad thing. Seemed obvious to me what Vanbasten’s point was.

Maliki hasn’t been exactly grateful to the U.S. as far as I can tell.

i'd say invading their country in the first place was a severe interference in their domestic affairs, too.

Yep

I'm sure they'd much rather still be under the murderous rule of Saddam -

BTW, you 'out' yourself by using the word "invading" - rather than "liberating"

F-slip...

we would not want to take the blame it.

The left never takes the blame for their own mess-ups and the DBM does not remind the public about them either.

I hope we get a Republican president in '08, but I want someone who will stand up to the DBM every time they lie about him. Tough, but doable or we are .....I hate to think about it.

Big difference. We removed the terrorist brutal Saddam Hussein regime which was too dangerous to keep after 9/11. The current Iraqi government is democratically elected and they are our allies as well.

Agree 100%. It is time to crush the terrorists in Iraq and not to destabilize the Iraqi government as the democrats are doing.

Then why didn't we attack Saudi Arabia and Egypt? No Iraqis were on those planes.

BUt his point is spot on; Although Ms. Hill has NOT apologized for her vote she does say it was a mistake. So in Hillary’s world: the US should not overturn a dictator like Saddam but should overturn a democratically elected Maliki. Go figure.

I think you’ve been beamed back to the ship a few too many times Kirk.

By your logic, we shouldn’t have invaded Afghanistan. ‘There were no Afghani’s!’

Presidential candidate, Senator Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) acknowledged that the President’s “surge” strategy seems to be working, but called for Bush to “bring the troops home before any more damage is done to my presidential campaign.” “The American people are not expecting success, they are not prepared for success, it could be too big of a shock to the system,” Clinton contended.

Clinton recommended that before the troops come home they should first depose Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to “shake things up—like we did in Vietnam when we deposed Diem.”

In related news, al-Maliki said if U.S. troops pull out, he will “find friends elsewhere.” His aides are said to be working on a profile to be posted on “MySpace.com.”
