Tamez Treviño said hes never heard of any law requiring that his drivers know English. Many company owners dont speak English, let alone their workers

time they learned

Perhaps when they try to avoid immigration services. I don’t know. As for the woman and kids, it’s likely targeted to draw more attention than a man and woman would.

A car/truck is pulled over. Out pour the illegals. Some may bolt into traffic to avoid capture.

“Health and Human Services and many more County Agencies are catering to the illegal population which is English illiterate.”

Of course they have — modern American Government at all levels wants nothing more than to surrender to whatever foreign force wants to occupy the country, be they Muslims or Mexicans. Anybody is preferable to Americans.

To learn all the English is not needed. Some simple phrases memorized should do the trick.

Example:
Weight station ahead, all trucks must stop

All traffic merge right

Stop or I’ll shoot.

From the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Motor carriers must assure that all drivers of commercial motor vehicles meet the minimum qualifications specified in Part 391.

A driver must meet the following requirements:

Be in good health and physically able to perform all duties of a driver.

Be at least 21 years of age.

Speak and read English well enough to converse with the general public, understand highway traffic and signals, respond to official questions, and be able to make legible entries on reports and records.

Be able to drive the vehicle safely.

Know how to safely load and properly block, brace, and secure the cargo.

Have only one valid commercial motor vehicle operator's license.

Provide an employing motor carrier with a list of all motor vehicle violations or a signed statement that driver has not been convicted of any motor vehicle violations during the past 12 months.

A disqualified driver must not be allowed to drive a commercial motor vehicle for any reason.

Pass a driver's road test or equivalent.

Complete an application for employment.

Possess a valid medical certificate.

For shame.

It was an oblique reference to the young Japanese fellow who shot dead - by a cop of all people - when he did not obey the common (TV & movie anyway) command of ‘FREEZE’.

Quite the stink both here (US) and there (Japan).

BTW, the kid was just ringing a doorbell.

I talked with a cousin of mine yesterday who drives long distance trucks and he said the american drivers already have a plan in place to handle Mexican trucks they catch parked at a truck stop.

According to him lots of american truckers have went to Home Depot and bought cordless drills with 1/4 inch bits. He said after having their tires drilled a couple of times they will return to Mexico and won’t want to return. A tire that has a 1/4 inch hole in the sidewall can’t be fixed and that could get expensive real quick.

This may just be truck driver bravado, I don’t know, but I do believe there will be a lot of trouble before it’s over.

“Commercial drivers are driving down the road in an 80,000-pound rocket full of gasoline,” said St. Onge, R-Ellisville.

Uhhh...no. I don't know of any trucks bigger than a pickup that run on gasoline anymore. Everything is diesel.

But, yes, they need to be able to speak English if they're going to drive in this country.

I have met Mexicans who have been in Texas for 15 years and they still can’t speak English. They live in Spanish speaking neighborhoods and work with other Mexican and they make no effort to learn.

I’ve wondered how they will respond to the weigh stations/check points? Will there be lanes marked ‘Spanish - English’? And how they will handle the ‘weigh in motion’ areas if their trucks are equipped with the transmitters. But if the drivers do meet the English requirement I guess they will do okay.

I hope these guys know what the big red sign with the letters S-T-O-P means, along with WRONG WAY, ONE WAY and so on. Not that there any safety concerns or anything.

There's the rub. If they can't speak English, they can't read it. Next will be demands to make our highway signs bi-lingual - those little pictures aren't enough.

Segovia, who was back home and unavailable for comment, was handed the citation on Aug. 2 at about 4:45 p.m. at the Colombia-Solidarity International Bridge. He also was cited for having non-working brake lights and a leaky hydraulic hose, which are fairly routine violations.

Coming soon to a town near you, thanks to Bush insisting that Mexican truckers come into America....unsafe trucks driven by drunken Mexicans who can't speak or read English, or English road signs.

What a bunch of crappola.

It also will allow up to 100 U.S. carriers to go deep into Mexico with their loads. So will these drivers be required to habla Espanol?

Bet ya Mexican/American/Greencarders will be the only truckers going down there for several reasons.

In all my (too long) years I have only seen ONE case involving a CDL with a driver ticketed for insufficient knowledge of English.

(the fact he needed a translator for the court did not help his case.)

English is the international language of travel.

They use it in shipping, they use it in air tavel.

This is simple common sense and it is about public safety.

Any government entity that these foreign drivers need to deal with will most certainly be required to hire translators...the cops, the motor vehicle dept, city, state, county, weigh stations, dept of trans, what else?.....Mercy, we are suckers.

When was this? I missed it.

The smugglers have been ingenuous. I remember when they did the same with a UPS truck. Was the Walmart truck a fake truck or real truck with a fake driver?

Several year ago I came behind an 1 8 wheeler loaded the 20 gallon buckets of frozen strawberries and drugs. Everyone after the truck was offered strawberries. I took one bucket. They kept the drugs. LOL.

No joke, times have changed.... a lot.....

Just last week on the TV (maybe CBS) they played the tape from an air traffic controller attempting to get a plane landed by pilots who could not speak or understand English. They had a book to translate, asking the air traffic guy to wait so they could look up words! They may have been Chinese and they said it is happening a lot lately.

I'm not finding the story on it, but will look later again.

Check this out. LOL

Allegedly, a Pan Am 727 flight waiting for start clearance in Munich overheard the following:

Lufthansa (in German): “Ground, what is our start clearance time?”

Ground (in English): “If you want an answer you must speak in English.”

Lufthansa (in English): “I am a German, flying a German airplane, in Germany. Why must I speak English?”

Unknown voice from another plane (in a beautiful British accent): “Because you lost the bloody war.”

Given the rampant corruption and extortion exercised by Mexican police, I doubt very much it is safe for non mexican truckers.

Even tourist busses are routinly shaken down by police officers.

Seems like early this year? About the same time the fake Key Energy yellow transport was caught attempting to get around the Hebbronville checkpoint on oilfield lease roads. It was full of marijuana.

The way I remember it, the Wal-Mart truck was fake, the driver had a Wal-Mart shirt on but a whiskey? cap. He was waved through the BP checkpoint, but the DPS truck stop further north was manned that day and had a K-9 unit. The truck driver did a 180 and headed south. They chased and caught him. I heard later that same truck had been up and down Hwy 281 several times before.

From experience on the border I understand that for every ten trucks that cross to the U.S. only two go south into Mexico.

Figure out how many U.S. jobs will be lost. Forget about the hundred companies. That is a distraction from the real number of trucks which cross.
