Burning Man torched early; artist held

SAN FRANCISCO - Burning Man became Burnt Man four days early on Tuesday, and a San Francisco performance artist was arrested on suspicion of igniting the signature figure of the counterculture festival in the remote Nevada desert.

The early morning fire scorched about 85 percent of the structure, Burning Man spokeswoman Andie Grace said. Event engineers decided it would be best to dismantle it and rebuild a less elaborate version, accomplishing in two days what normally takes weeks so the figure would be finished in time for Saturday night's scheduled burning, she said.

The approximately 40-foot-tall wood and neon structure was supposed to go up in flames in the ceremonial climax of the weeklong annual event. Burning Man, an art, music and performance festival that draws thousands of people, began in San Francisco in 1986 and moved to Nevada's Black Rock Desert in 1990.

Many festival-goers who were awake watching Tuesday's lunar eclipse said they saw a man deliberately ignite the figure at about 3 a.m., Grace said.

"It was in plain sight of many people," she said. "Everyone is looking at it this morning, this big black figure in the sky and that wasn't supposed to burn, saying, 'Now what do we do?'"

It’s obvious, you boneheads - break out the marshmallows and weenies.

What!? It is an anarchist festival. Chaos and anarchy rules there. What is wrong with these people? Are they not intelligent enough to grasp their own philosophy that they have committed to honoring? Theory and practice . . . Welcome to REALITY.

I swear some of the biggest conformists are anarchist and 'non conformists'. Confront them about it with facts and examples and they become livid. My guess is most of these folks don't really understand what chaos and anarchy even mean.

"Burning man festival is just slightly less significant then a fart in a windstorm."

You give it far too much credit.

I ran into some of these idiots at a county commision meeting a few years back. The smell was unpleasant to say the least. Most were AWOL from the bath tub.

So it’s safe to say the anarchists climaxed early? The “anarchist leaders” are angry that the anarchist organizational hierarchy’s wishes have been disrespected?

It just doesn’t get any better than this.

By the way, I never heard of the Burning Man festival until I read about it in a mainstream motorcycle magazine a couple of months ago — maybe Motorcyclist or Sport Rider — motorcycle hooligan ping, anyone?

Quite frankly I’m suprised it took this long for some anarchist liberal moonbat to do this.

“Wow, man- now what? It’s like, dude- I guess we should just smoke these, and then like hang out, man”- Is that what a Burning Man festival basically is? Have I just basically summarized what the attendees reactions were when they saw the structure on fire?

On the other hand, too bad the guy posted bond- based on the mugshot, prison could have been a real interesting story for him.

That photograph looks like a police mug shot, but I doubt they would take one with make-up on him. Does that mean he has tattooed his face to look like a clown? Or maybe it was the “burning man police force” that arrested him?

Burn it in four days - celebration!

Burn it today - arson!

What’s the difference? Rules. Private property rights.

Question Authority, man.
