Lieberman as next Attorney General?
Instapundit ^

That's what Marjorie Cohn is saying on The Thom Hartmann Show. The talk started a few hours ago, from what they're saying. (not that it didn't occur to any of us earlier, but it's going around now) Per Cohn:

* It would stop the Senate investigations dead in their tracks. * It would guarantee a Senate confirmation. * It would change the balance of power in the Senate, in favor of the Republicans. * And it smells of Karl Rove.

Her advice? Barrage the Senate with calls. Make sure this doesn't happen. It would be an unmitigated disaster.

OK, I wonder how a replacement would be chosen for Leiberman...

Yeah, I don't see those two happening at the same time.

How is this a disaster? Lieberman is pretty conservative for a dem, and the republicans could get control b/c the Goveror of ct is a republican

It would mean the loss of an important pro-victory vote in the Senate.
If it happened then Bush and Rove would prove beyond all doubt that they never actually had an ounce of political wit after all.

Lieberman would never take such a big step down and who listens to The Thom Hartmann Show anyway? They hate Lieberman.

Why would Joe take this job for a year and a half? He was reelected last November!

Why AG?

Lieberman’s no garden-variety lawyer.

What good would he do anyone at the Justice Department? Would we have him sue terrorist suspects?

Lieberman should be in charge of Homeland Security.

Transfer Chertoff to AG.

Democrats hate Joe Lieberman more than they hate Republicans.
Because at least Republicans are expected to act like Republicans.
But Lieberman is a traitor to the Party in their eyes, and to them, that is the highest crime imaginable.

Lieberman would face crippling opposition from his former party in the Senate.
And they would accuse him of being just another “Bush crony.”

I’m sure the interest from the administration would be to silence all the controversy around Justice without putting a nutty left winger.

But if Leiberman gives up his Senate seat he might never get it back. Interesting choice for him if the job is offered.

This idea goes into the “too good to be true” file along with the Iran attack rumor.

He’d be an interesting choice. Just for fun, since I think this is unlikely, who do you think Gov. Rell would appoint?

One idea, although he’s bad on abortion, would be former Rep. Gary Franks. We’d get a tough-minded Democrat Senator as AG and a black, moderately conservative Republican as his successor in the Senate. Upchuck Schumer would commit suicide.

Joe would have to have a frontal lobotomy to take that job and give up the Senate. Not a chance.

CT’s “republican” governor would appoint another dem in his place.

Why would you say that? The Dems have ZERO standing to claim a right to that seat. First they abandoned Lieberman in their primary. Then they sought to defeat him in the general when he switched to Independent. The fact remains that the Dems LOST that senate election in CT. They have no claim to the seat.

The Senator did them a favor when he agreed to caucus with the Dems...and it's been a tentative arrangement ever since.

Good point, I didn’t think of that. But CT Gov Rell is a very squishy (R), and there aren’t enough Rs to choose from anyway. It won’t matter because Lieberman’s not going anywhere.

Lieberman is not conservative. While several Democrats voted against amnesty, Lieberman was 100% for it.

...and while several Democrats voted against continuing in Iraq, Lieberman was 100% for it. He's not a conservative, but he's more conservative than most of his fellow party members on several issues. There are exceptions though, like amnesty.
