LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards told a labor group that he would ask Americans to make a big sacrifice: their sport utility vehicles.

"I think Americans are actually willing to sacrifice," Edwards said Tuesday during a forum held by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. "One of the things they should be asked to do is drive more fuel efficient vehicles."

The former North Carolina senator was asked specifically if he would tell them to give up their SUVs, he said, "Yes."

Get ready for the onslaught of other Demo candidates trying to top this one. Next they'll be saying they'll tax SUV owners to help offset their carbon footprint. I wonder if Edwards' gets transported around campaign stops in a Prius?

Well I think Americans should drop their multi-million dollar mega-mansions which consume tons of energy. What does Mr. Edwards think about that?????

One of the things he should be asked is to live in a more fuel efficient house. He’ll have to take my SUV out of my cold, dead hands. What a moron.

Why wasn’t his answer, “We already have!”

John will you give up your 4000 sq ft vacation home on Figure 8 Beach?
I am not asking you to give up your 30k+ sq ft home, just the vacation home.

I do drive a more fuel efficient vehicle. My big ol' 4 door Buick is way more fuel efficient than a Corvette. Moron.

I would like John Edwards to take a ride with me and my wife and 3 kids in the “non-SUV” of his choice. I would like him to help with all three car seats and just maybe go with the family to drop the kids off at school. Later, we could do an 8 hour drive with my family of five.

John, You pick the vehicle best suited for my family.

The true elite liberal, he’s telling the little people to sacrifice!

Johnny boy is out of touch. The moonbats hate SUVs and applaud this, but the average Democrat in my neck of the woods drives an SUV. I hope all the Dems start attacking SUV owners. They’ll get wild praise from the moonbats and drive away the rank and file.

ripnbang, look for a 'scathing' reply to this thread from Mrs. Edwards. Like she did with that blogger lady. I can draft it...

How dare FReepers post a picture of our 'country' home; critique its size and athletic assets. Why we have low flush toidies in all 26 bathrooms. And how many of the campaigns aides John employes do these FReepers think can fit into a Prious?

Check your pings rip...this could get ugly.

I would ask Americans to sacrifice blow-hard politicians.

It's a much smaller sacrifice for a much larger gain.

"Edwards was asked during his appearance how he explained the contradiction of asking Americans to sacrifice while he's living in a 28,000-square-foot (2,600-square-meter) mansion.

He said he came from nothing, worked hard all his life, has always supported workers and fought big corporations as a lawyer.

"I have no apologies whatsoever for what I've done with my life," he said to loud cheers. "My entire life has been about the same cause, which is making sure wherever you come from, whatever your family is, whatever the color of your skin, you get a real chance to do something great in this country."
