Get government out of the bathroom
LATimes ^ | August 29, 2007 | Nick Gillespie

Posted on 08/29/2007 8:05:18 AM PDT by bahblahbah

As we all look forward to more sputtering news conference antics from Sen. Larry Craig, here's hoping that the Idaho politician will eventually draw on traditional Republican principles and stand up for his right to engage in consensual sex in toilet stalls with men. Craig, a critic of the Patriot Act who weakened some of its worst provisions during last year's renewal vote, clearly understands the need to keep the government from snooping willy-nilly on its citizens.

At first flush, the news that the 62-year-old senior senator from the Gem State pleaded guilty Aug. 8 to misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct in a Minnesota airport men's room is not simply embarrassing but humiliating -- especially to the people of Idaho, who returned him to office for the third time in 2002 with 65% of the vote. According to police reports, Craig tapped his foot near and ran his hand alongside his toilet stall divider, which the arresting officer said he recognized as a come-on for sex. After the cop, who was sitting in the adjacent stall, flashed his badge and made the arrest, Craig compounded his poor judgment by trying to invoke senatorial privilege. He handed the police officer his U.S. Senate business card and intoned, "What do you think of that?" Craig paid almost $600 in fines and fees and was sentenced to a year of probation and 10 days in a county jail (the latter was stayed).

I think Nick Gillespie has ulterior motives. He wants to cuddle up with Corey while sharing tears and fears forever. Who knows what would have happened if he had only kept up with Kirk(who is the Christian David Deangelo) instead of gotten ready for Freddy(who is ghey). Regardless, forget say no to drugs, just say yes to Jon Bon Jovi.

I also later worked for the pornographically named teen magazine, Teen Machine, where I interviewed the Coreys: Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, and that ilk. At Teen Machine, the most notable thing there was that I ghostwrote an advice column there for Alyssa Milano. And there's probably any number of pregnant teenage mothers who unfortunately followed the bad advice of Alyssa Milano. Who knows actually how much venereal disease got spread as a result of that column?

My comment is suppose to be a joke. Nick Gillespie used to be an editor(or something) for Teen Machine magazine. I just kind of tied it all in together.

We had a major problem at Malden City Hall. The Men’s Room by the Senior Center got Five Stars from a Gay Web Site. It was shocking at the nerve of these gay guys.

Why isn't GLBT and other nutcase-deviate groups jumping up to defend Larry Craig's "lifestyle"?

Activists see the Craig affair and Foley affair and one or two others through this prism:

1. He's Republican
2. He's been nominally conservative
3. His "anti-gay" votes are hypocrisy

If not for these little dramas, those of us in the boonies would be oblivious to the wonders of gay enlightenment. How else are we to learn the nuances of stall queers, or even know there are such things as stall queers? I, for one, want to thank Senator Craig for the education.

I've noticed the following phenomenon in two major cities (including Boston):

1. I go into a store near a big public library to buy something and notice that the store seems to be run entirely by gay men.

2. I later hear that that the police have made many arrests in response to complaints about sexual activity in the library men's room.

My conclusion is that many gay men find the idea of employment near a library attractive because it provides an opportunity for frequent sex in the library men's room.

these are the same people defending sex in public bathrooms.

This is insane.]

Perhaps it should be illegal to list a public restroom as a hook up place as on internet sites. (no free speech to comit a crime)

arrest a few webmasters and clarity will come to their minds.

I'm sure the Editorial Board of the LA Slimes was all in favor of the Federal Government legislatively mandating the installation low flow toilets.

Therefore their 'get out of the bathroom' comments now ring pretty damned hollow with me.

I thought I was being wise once upon a time in Vegas. I had a pervert peeping under my stall. Since I was there because the urinals were all full when I entered, and I was in full swing, I just aimed about 30 degrees to port and gave the guy a bath. Much to my dismay later, I was told I had probably made the guys day. Where do these perverts come from and why can't we shoot them?

When I went to college I worked for the Honors Program which had its offices/facilites in the library’s basement (no, it wasn’t dark and dreary). The offices had a connecting hallway to go up the stairs to the library itself. The first day after we moved into the basement I had to go down that hallway and lock a connecting door that led to the stairs. There was a men’s room in the hallway, so I opened the door and announced to all that door would be locked in just a few minutes. Didn’t think much about it, until a rather large number of men came streaming out of the bathroom, far more in number then there were stalls in there. And I mean a large number of men given the bathroom’s size. I found out later that the lowest level bathroom in the library was a place gays had chosen as an assignation point. Not that there is anything wrong with that, of course, and, in all other ways, gays are just like straights.

I was going to say that perhaps if Nick’s child was exposed to some exhibitionist sex act in a public bathroom, or worse yet, molested by some pervert, he might change his mind about local cops trying to prevent the restroom from being used for purposes other than that for which it was designed. After looking at the pix posted, I would guess that no, he wouldn’t mind a little recruiting of his adopted child by some pervert.

You must not only live in the boonies, but you must also be far away from an Interstate Highway too. Back in the ‘70’s, the State Police had the task of trying to keep the bathrooms at the rest stops on many of them free of gay activity.

“Of course, Cary Grant denied he was gay as well.’

Cary Grant’s fourth wife, Dyan Cannon, denies that Cary Grant was a homosexual as well. If being married and having kids is just a beard, condemnation of anyone for being gay without ever acting it out seems no better than witch hunts.

Libertarians believe the government has no business policing a bathroom or your bedroom. Its not like Craig exposed himself in public. And there is a legitimate issue of whether its right for a vice cop to make someone offer a sexual proposition. I don't condone Craig's conduct but I do think when the government gets into our personal lives on a level that's inappropriate, we should ask if government has any business being there in the first place.

Liberals don't care about moral principle. Libertarians think people should be trusted to police their own behavior. To the latter, government should intervene only when your conduct might harm others. A free society should allow individuals the freedom to be stupid and to offend - as long as what they do doesn't harm others.

Exactly. It's hard to defend this type of thing in a PUBLIC restroom. I haven't read this particular section of the penal code, but I was shocked that the fine was $600, that's a pretty stiff penalty. I think the prosecutor was just jerking him around.

It was only a misdemeanor, not a felony. It still raises the question of police being around in a public bathroom. There was no allegation of indecent exposure or gay sex here. Oh which reminds me - where are the gay activists on all this? Yeah, I get it - Sen. Craig is a homophobe and a Republican so that's why they are silent.

I think you are misreading his op-ed. He is not saying make bathrooms hookups legal. He is saying de-couple the Republican Party from sexual morality issues as a defining meme. The "Defense of Marraige" and various state anti Gay Marraige initatives are what he suggests we drop.

It's a typcial libertarian perspective, as one would expect from Reason. Unfortunately for Nick and Reason there are MANY, MANY Socially conservative Republican voters who are deeply concerned about cultural rot, of which open acceptance of homosexuality is normal is a bell weather issue. And there are relatively few Libertarian Republicans.

Perhaps a new coalition could be formed: Libertarian Republicans and some subset of current Democratic voters who are mostly concerned about personal liberty (or, as conservatives see it legalized perversion and drugs), but really support small government.

I'm pretty sceptical. And of course it begs the question: where would all the cultural conservatives go if you stop catering to them in the GOP? In our system the obvious answer is the Dems, strange as that might seem.

I think his suggestion is likely to be ignored, just like most everything else on the cultural side is from Reason.
