Rep. Barney Frank says embattled Idaho Sen. Larry Craig is a hypocrite on gay rights issues, but he doesn’t think the Republican senator should resign. Frank, one of two openly gay members of Congress and a prominent voice on gay rights, said Craig should serve out the remainder of his term.

Frank is actually being politically savvy by saying this. He knows that if Craig stays in the Senate, he will be a lightning rod for bashing the GOP over all gay rights issues.

Frank is not stupid. This makes Frank look good to his constituents, and if Craig does stick it out, guarantees his loss in the election (Craig’s constituents are unlike Franks’ and will not be happy).
