A more appropriate question is "why would they not distance themselves...?
Your six figure friends are very much like a number of muslims I know here in the US; decent, working, willing to help out; and utterly impassive to the terrorism that others carry out in their names.
They don't participate and they don't oppose.
They would not harm you and they would not punish the lunatic who did (if he was muslim).
Their history tells them that acts of terrorism, intolerance, tribalism, and daily violence are just that - daily occurrences and entirely ordinary. "No big deal"
To their eyes, comfortable as it may be, western society is an aberration.
If you don't understand by this time that islam breeds a society totally at odds with any you've experienced since 1945, you are well on the way to finding out.

It’s the other way around - to you guys anything non-christian is an aberration.
Many muslims from iraq and iran have left the country because of the quite unpleasant experiences they made with the regimes there - then again many left when the air became to much poluted with heavy metalls - and most of them are sick and tired of this quite oriental kill and get killed game.
I guess many of them value peace and democracy higher then anyone over here - they just know the alternatives.
So why o why should these folks from all folks have to justify themselfes ?
There are otheres - they are over here but I guess in germany the problem is by far lower then in Belgium, the netherlands and France where you can see the one or other burka.
You will not see this in germany.
We have some (most times Pakistani some turkish)Imams that are definately on the dark side -we have a problem with them but we differenciate between them and the good guys - it’s our duty and if you don’t -
you loose the battle against the bad guys for sure.
