Reid Opens Door to Pact With Antiwar Republicans

Saying the coming weeks will be "one of the last opportunities" to alter the course of the war, Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) said he is now willing to compromise with Republicans to find ways to limit troop deployments in Iraq.

Reid acknowledged that his previous firm demand for a spring withdrawal deadline had become an obstacle for a small but growing number of Republicans who have said they want to end the war but have been unwilling to set a timeline.

"I don't think we have to think that our way is the only way," Reid said of specific dates during an interview in his office here. "I'm not saying, 'Republicans, do what we want to do.' Just give me something that you think you would like to do, that accomplishes some or all of what I want to do."

Reid's unwavering stance this summer earned him critics who said he was playing politics by refusing to bargain with antiwar Republicans. In the interview, he said that his goal remains an immediate return of U.S. troops but that now is the time to work with the GOP.

He cited bringing up legislation after Labor Day that would require troops to have more home leave, forcing military leaders to reduce troop levels, a measure that has drawn some Republican support.

During the week of Sept. 10, Congress will hear a progress report on the war from the U.S. commander in Baghdad, Gen. David H. Petraeus, and the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Ryan C. Crocker. After those hearings and a formal report from President Bush, lawmakers will renew their debate on the war.

That debate screeched to a halt in late July after the most poisonous confrontation since Democrats took control of Congress eight months ago.

That is good idea. Then we will not have to do it again and again.

Yeah, the Paulestinians are going to perk their ears up at this. More likely, though, Dingy Harry is referring to the usual suspects on the wimp side of the GOP—and their latest icon, the half-senile John Warner.

I’m looking at world history here and recent American history, for example the example of Reagan in Beirut.

So then, as far as you're concerned, we ran once so we should run again? Running from a fight NEVER solves anything and when you consider who we are at war with this is doubly true. Time and time again we have seen these animals fight longer and harder in the face of what they consider weakness. Time and time again we have seen that the ONLY language they understand is force. Overwhelming, crushing and absolutely crippling force.

I believe your problem is you are confusing these rabid freaks with human beings and trying to apply logic and reasoned thought to their actions and reactions. It is not possible to reason with people whose goal in a conflict is actually to DIE!

The biggest mistake of President Reagan is that he left Beirut when the terrorists killed 241 marines and sailors in 1983. Since then the terrorists learned that you can hit the US and the US will just leave, so they did it again in Somalia, Khubar towers, African embassies, USS Cole, and then they attacked here on 9/11/2001.

Thanks the Lord that President Bush is taking the fight to the heart of islamic terrorism land, the Middle East. It is there, mainly in Iraq, that our brave troops are killing and capturing them by the tens of thousands.

I think you and I are wasting our time with this guy, he is a defeatist, very confused and ignorant about history and the nature of the enemy, then he hides his defeatism behind the “fake Machoism” where in he wants to kill every muslim on the planet, but he does not want to kill the islamic terrorists in Iraq which become the center front of the war on terror.

Dingy Harry is desperate. All that good news out of Iraq has clearly affected his political judgment. Does any one think he would cut a deal with the RINOs if The Surge was a failure? NO! They would jump into bed with him. No one in the GOP is doing that today. If Harry has to entertain this - he's panicked.

“We need to get out of Iraq and go after Al-Qaeda.”

Uh, Al-Qaeda IS in Iraq. They are trying to force their own theocratic dictatorship on the Iraqis at the moment, and we’ve made it our goal since September 11th to prevent them of a safehaven and to take out their leadership and members. Well, that’s what we’re doing.

And we are not “creating” terrorists. That is a fallacy. The murderers who dress themselves in dynamite and destroy innocent women and children always had the capacity for their murderous thoughts to take shape. Now that we are there, the cockroaches are coming out of the dark and showing their true form.

And at the same time, we are ensuring that atleast 2 countries in the Middle East will no longer be safe for these murderers, and will have a chance at a democracy and hope. Not only are we fighting for the next generation of americans, but we are also obliged to the next generation of iraqis who will see that the insurgency is a failure of stone-age thinking and evil ambition, and there is hope and peace in democracy and modernity.

Leaving Iraq would give Al-Qaeda one of the BIGGEST terrorist safehavens ever. It would become one big training camp, and we wouldn’t be allowed there to fight them because short-sighted idiots like Reid want to win elections.

You’re starting to sound like Ron Paul with this ignorant talk.

I know that you fear mexican cleaning ladies more then the terrorist enemy but both Osama Bin Laden and Zawahiri have called Iraq the ‘central front’.

Why don’t you want Al Qaeda in Iraq defeated?

There are about four anti-war Republicans in the Senate. Good luck with that Reid.

Sheesh, he’ll do anything to surrender, won’t he?
