A Wayne County homeowner shot an killed one of three people who broke into his home early Friday, authorities said.
Three armed men broke into the home at 2546 Old Mount Olive Highway at about 12:30 a.m. while the family slept inside. The intruders held two adults and four children, ages 4, 5 and 8, at gunpoint and ransacked the house, authorities said.
During the robbery, one of the suspects fired a shot, prompting the man who lives in the house to grab a gun and shoot back, authorities said.
Antione Logan Chestnut, 19, of 109 Evelyn Circle in Dudley, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other two intruders fled in a dark-colored vehicle, authorities said.
No one else was hurt in the incident.

That has to be the most disturbing crime I've ever read about. Any new news on that case? I'm guessing there must be a gag order because I have seen anything posted recently while searching with "petit" as a keyword.

An 18-year-old man from Dudley was arrested Friday by Wayne County sheriff's detectives and charged with two felony crimes in connection with a break-in at the Neuse River Gun and Pawn Shop in Mar Mac.
Antione Logan Chestnut of Evelyn Drive was charged with possession of stolen goods and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond.
Detective Sgt. Mike Kabler said the arrest resulted from an ongoing investigation in the June 21 break-in and larceny from the store. He said more arrests are possible. Detective Sgt. Carl Lancaster assisted in the case.

Oh, you know how it goes. You shoot one of them, and the other two get so darn JUMPY, it’s hard to get off another good shot!
It's a shame that the homeowner was only able to kill one of these home invaders, and that one only after his family was in the gravest danger, being held at gunpoint and with the invaders having initiated fire.

It is possible that the homeowner was badly surprised and held at gunpoint, keeping him from going for his gun. When they start shooting, of course, then you have nothing to lose and you might as well try for your gun. If this is the case, then the homeowner did well to get one of the three and come out the winner.

Home invasions are commonly drug related. I wouldn’t be surprised if Daddy is dirty.

Nope. These vermin don't even deserve a chance to go to jail. We need more armed citizens with the fortitude to defend themselves and their families, and after the word gets out that people aren't such easy pickins anymore this crap will stop, or at least be mitigated.

Holding family members hostage especially little children? That’s enough for me. I’m glad he shot. He did the right thing.
Sherrif Joe Arapaio out in Arizona has a very sensible solution.

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY: Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) who created the "tent city jail": He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them. He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies. He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects. Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination. He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel. When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs. He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value. When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."
He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

No, but I will endeavor to find out.
Well if the bad guys were holding the family at gun point he may have felt that the risk outweighed the benefits, that is his family may have gotten shot if he'd gone for his gun. Until that is they started shooting anyway, at which point he in effect had nothing more to risk.
It was enough to end the threat to his family. That’s good enough. It’s also better than the perps did, they were 0 out of 4, and they lost one of their number...permanently. It’s also possible he nicked one or both of the other two. If they turn up at the hospital, or dead, we’ll know.
Why bother to lie, it's not like it's some northeastern pit of liberalism. Guys break into your house at 12:30 AM in a southern state, you can blast 'em with a shotgun as they come through the door, even if they turn out not to be armed at all.
Why can't we all just get along?
Wayne county is as country as NC gets, Turkeys, hogs, cotton, Seymour Johnson AF base and a pickle factory.
IMO, it’s a pretty dumb idea to home invade in an area where probably 4 out of 5 homes are armed.
