ADL Responds To Open Letter From CAIR; Releases Photo Of Group's Leader Speaking Next To Hezbollah Flag

New York, NY, August 30, 2007 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), in response to an "open letter" from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) suggesting that their organization has "acted numerous times … to condemn terrorism," today released a photograph of CAIR's executive director speaking at a podium next to a known anti-Semite and the flag of the terrorist group Hezbollah.

Glen S. Lewy, ADL National Chair, and Abraham H. Foxman, National Director, issued the following statement:

The Council on American-Islamic Relations has once again squandered an opportunity to unequivocally condemn terrorists – such as Hezbollah and Hamas – by name and to address its past affiliation with the Islamic Association for Palestine, whose ideology is rooted in virulent anti-Semitism.

The August 29, 2007, "Open Letter from CAIR to ADL" is yet another weary tactic by CAIR's leadership to divert attention from its troubling roots and disingenuous record. CAIR Chairman Parvez Ahmed and Executive Director Nihad Awad continue to willfully ignore legitimate questions.  Attacking ADL will not make the real issues go away.

An organization that purportedly seeks to enter into dialogue with ADL should firmly denounce the anti-Semitic rhetoric and support for terror organizations that regularly occur at rallies, instead of sponsoring and joining them.

ADL's 94-year history supporting the civil rights of all in this country, including Muslims, and our record of teaching respect for all religions through interfaith and diversity education programs is unparalleled.  Unfortunately, CAIR has shown that it is not a legitimate partner in this vital work.

In the attached photo released by ADL, CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad is shown delivering a speech under a Hezbollah flag during a rally on April 20, 2002 in Washington, DC.  To his right stands Imam Abdul Alim Musa, the anti-Semitic head of Masjid Al Islam mosque.

Gee, who could’a known? Maybe at his morning prayer prostration, Jorge Arbusto could ask the President of CAIR how such a picture could have be Photoshopped...

CAIR, ANSWER and it’s leaders suck but we have to demand truth in advertising here on Free Republic. The hezbollah flag the ADL claims this guy is “standing next to” while giving a speech is being hand held and waved by some idiot behind him. The title and article suggest the flag was part a permanent fixture of this rally, that the CAIR leader knew it and purposefully stood under it to give this speech and in effect was an endorsement.

That possibly the CAIR spokesman and the leader of some mosque next to him are anti-semetic is real surprise too. Who’d a thunk?

Now, The CAIR guy probably is anti-semetic and might support hezbollah, but the picture itself is not proof of this, as the story would like you to believe. With all the juicy evidence of CAIR’s shady affiliations and disguised intentions out there, I don’t see the need to reach like this on a photo that seems indeterminate.

Before the knee jerks start calling me a hezby lover, I think we all should value truth on FR above blind devotion to any cause. If I'm wrong about this, please point it out.

I am glad to see the ADL is starting to take an intrest in CAIR.

I myself think a US policy of legally deporting and denying entry to those who are jihad supports or sharia law advocates is where we should be going.

BOB J, YOU ARE WRONG, IMHO. "waved by some idiot behind him"
The flag is being held by the person next to him, NOT BEHIND HIM!!! The CAIR guy even seems to be recognizing that person by looking at him. WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU BOB?

Well, my error, the guy in the white shirt is a different guy, but I’m still convinced that the CAIR Speaker to the right, is aware of the hezbo flag to his right. If not, he must me blind.

Possibly, but my point is the flag is not part of the stage setup. The guy with the flag could have walked up and started waving after he started speaking. Early in FReeper activism, we would have nazis show up unexpected at our rallies. We would give them the bum’s rush but not before a few pics were snapped by our enemies and then used as “evidence” that FR was a neo-nazi organization.

I’m not covering for Awad, just pointing out the picture doesn’t support the premise of the article. IMHO, it makes the ADL look a little less than stellar.

Just trying to call ‘em as I see ‘em.

Unfortunately, while an argument could easily be made that violent jihad supporters should get the heave ho, I got a feeling that sharia law supporters will be protected as free speech.

Advocating sharia law is not the same as imposing it, although given the chance I’m sure many supporters would have no problem with it being enforced at the business end of a gun.

BTW - It looks like the guy speaking is a good 10-15 feet in front of the hezbollah waving jerk. That image to the right looks like a big screen projection of him.

If not, he must be a giant of epic proportions.

I can imagine this conversation among CAIR members right now:

“See those troublemaking Zionists? How dare they use such hate speech. The Jews are always causing trouble.”

The ADL isn’t going to mean much to CAIR. My advice is to fight fire with fire: lots of advertisements on television showing dancing Arabs celebrating the falling of the World Trade Center, lawsuits galore whenever anyone says anything negative about any Jew anywhere, complaint after complaint to media hosting CAIR, protests at CAIR rallies, and always, always, always, big billboards with accurate quotes from Islamic leaders about killing Jews, Americans, schoolchildren, and non-believers.

I’m sick of being nice to people who want to kill me and destroy my culture.

Bob, You are bending over backwards for Awad. I don’t support that, I think the ADL is justified in showing the picture as a counter to what CAIR was trying to present about them not condoning terrorism.

Garbage in garbage out. If the pic doesn’t support the premise it makes the ADL look stupid and desperate.

I don’t got a particular dog in this particular fight, I call ‘em as I see ‘em.

I believe his culture is American, proud of US and also about Israel the true friend of US.
Just as Irish Americans might be proud of Ireland (not just on St. Pat’s day), or Italians of Italy.

>>Is your culture American or Israeli?<<

Obviously my culture is American. Half my family is Jewish. The other half is a mix of Catholic and Protestant. Islamists have been calling for the destruction of American culture for a long time, along with a genocide of the Jews. The Islamofascists are no friend to Christians, either.

This means me and my family are a target several times over.
