Terri Schiavo's Family Continues Effort to Block Jack Kevorkian UF Speech
Life News ^ | 9/3/07 | Steven Ertelt

Gainesville, FL (LifeNews.com) -- The family of Terri Schiavo is continuing its efforts to block a speech by Jack Kevorkian scheduled for the middle of next month. The speech would be the first for the former assisted suicide crusader following his release from prison for killing a disabled man and showing the death on national television.

Kevorkian would speak to students at the University of Florida on October 11 and receive $50,000 for the talk, as long as his parole officers approve the trip.

The family of Terri Schiavo has been leading an effort to stop the speech by gathering petitions from concerned citizens so Kevorkian doesn't get a platform in their home state.

They don't want the former pathologist telling students that people with disabilities should be killed, like their sister, rather than receiving appropriate medical treatment or rehabilitative care.

Bobby Schindler, Terri's brother, told LifeNews.com, "We have collected thousands of petitions (and they are still coming in) to deliver to the Office of the President of the University of Florida."

"We're demanding the University rescind its offer to pay $50,000 for Kevorkian to address the students," he added.

"Despite the ongoing message of death spreading through our society and those, like Jack Kevorkian, who attempt to justify killing the most vulnerable among us, we are committed to fight against this death-obsessed culture and spread Terri's legacy of life, hope and love," Schindler explained.

He said there is still time for pro-life people and others worried about Kevorkian's pro-assisted suicide message to sign a petition asking the University of Florida to cancel the speech.

The petition can be found at the Terri Schindler Schiavo Foundation web site.

What did he say? I recall him inviting himself to funerals. Wasn’t he even disinvited by the family in one case?

Do you mean B. Clinton?

What did he say? I recall him inviting himself to funerals. Wasn’t he even disinvited by the family in one case?

If so, he was criticizing Fred Thompson and Bill C. said that you should have an opinion one way or the other on Terri Schiavo instead of no opinion. (I read it this a.m. but that was the gist of Clinton's remarks on Terri and Fred Thompson.

Autopsies anyone? Florida is having a fall sale. St. Pete Times again reports. Seems like we are getting a lot of articles from them lately.

A well-known doctor officially takes the helm of the 5th District Medical Examiner's Office today as the agency seeks to retool after a tumultuous year that saw the previous medical examiner resign in a cloud of controversy.

Dr. Jon R. Thogmartin, the current medical examiner in Pinellas and Pasco counties who performed the autopsy of Terri Schiavo, has been appointed to direct the five-county district that includes Hernando County.

Medical examiner steps in... The examiner for Pinellas and Pasco joins what had been an office in disarray.

More on Loyola, the place where they look like Catholics as on a movie set...

It is the place where the absolutes of good and evil take a back seat to a blending of good with evil in a spicy soup.

I wonder how they will get along with the Pope.

In the past, traditional Catholics may have found certain decisions made by LMU to be unbecoming of a Catholic institution. These skeptics make Fr. Lawton's accomplishment even more noteworthy. Indeed, during Fr. Lawton's presidency, speakers who call celibacy "a system of power, of patriarchy," who defended Michael Schiavo's right to deprive his wife of both food and hydration, who are pro-choice politicians and who are major critics of the Catholic Church have graced LMU with their insight. Even the "Vagina Monologues" has visited LMU.

As most of you probably know, the University has declared its Mission Statement to be the following: the encouragement of learning, the education of the whole person as well as the service of faith and the promotion of justice...............

Education above dogma

Dead Certain??

Even when Mr. Bush decided to visit drowning New Orleans, "there would be no rush, as had been the case when Bush zoomed back to the White House (from Crawford, Tex.) to sign the Trerri Schiavo bill," "Dead Certain" said.

When Mr. Bush finally made it to stricken New Orleans for a press conference, Karl Rove demanded that the scene be staged as a "hope story" in Jackson Square. Not even nightmare New Orleans could dampen the Bush optimism with its toxic flood water.

Hmmmm, where's the crying baby graphic?

Then we fought. We phone-called (even from overseas), knocked on doors, stood on street corners, e-mailed, petitioned, gave more money, wrote letters, etc., to deliver a majority to the Democratic Party. Now, look at what they're doing with it!

Twenty-one of them voted against the First Amendment rights of Move-On.Org during that bizarre, Terri Schiavo-like vote which the Senate was able to find time for while a decision can't be made about our troops, trapped in a civil war subsequent to our illegal invasion and occupation of an unarmed country!'

When the '08 election campaign is in full swing and the Democratic candidate inevitably becomes the target of "Swift-Boat-style" media-politics I want every one of those 21, and the three who abstained (one of whom was Barack Obama, a would-be candidate!) to remember back to the day when they voted against, or passively turned their backs on, a free unsupressed media!

LETTERS: Build windmills, not restaurants; Clintons and MoveOn work hand in glove; Without quick changes, there's no reason to vote

Fred and Terri redux, over and over and over. Not a day goes by when the libs fail to mention their burden of Terri. Washington Post says it again, kick that tar baby.

When Thompson was asked about the 2005 furor over whether brain-damaged Terri Schiavo should be kept alive, he told a Tampa station: "That's going back in history. I don't remember the details of it."

Out-of-Town Critics Too Tough On Thompson?

Fred and Terri...

They hammer it home.

On a recent trip to Florida, Thompson was asked his position on a National Catastrophe Relief Fund that would provide financial aid to homeowners who lose everything in the event of a natural disaster, such as a hurricane. Thompson replied that he “didn’t know enough about it.” He also said the same about the Terri Schiavo case and about drilling for oil in the Everglades. For all the time he spent not campaigning, one would think that he would at least read a newspaper or something.

Fred and Terri....and now Bill!

"I can’t tell you who I thinks going to win. I think in an amorphous way, they’d all -- they’d like for [Fred] Thompson to be their nominee because it’s like Reagan in 1980 and President Bush in 2000 -- real conservative but enough pizzazz that independents can read whatever they want into it. It’s like a Rorschach test. But they can’t do that yet because, like he said, he didn’t think al-Qaida was a serious threat and didn’t know where he stood on [Terri] Schiavo and all that.

Fred and Terri and Bill again...

On former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.): “If you just take his profile, he is the one they’d like to vote for.”

But he has hurt chances by looking unprepared, failing to offer an opinion when asked about the Terri Schiavo case or playing down the importance of capturing Osama bin Laden in the fight against terrorism, Clinton said.

Another thread on Down's from wagglebee...

Recently, while wandering through my local grocery, I turned the corner, heading up the cereal aisle. I had no more walked ten feet when I caught the attention of a stranger – a young man in his mid-twenties – walking toward me. Upon seeing me, his face lit up and a smile spread from ear to ear. I smiled in return, his pace quickened and he marched straight over to me and with a welcoming voice said, "Hello, how are you?" I stopped, we exchanged a few friendly words and then after a hardy “goodbye,” he moved on to greet the next person similarly.

Within a moment, an elderly couple followed, keeping an eye on the young man who, I quickly surmised was their son. The grinning mother said, "He's very friendly!" I laughed, that was an understatement! I stood there silent for a moment, my spirit energized by this unusual and yet most human of encounters.

This young man was very different from me as I don't normally greet the strangers I meet each day in such a friendly and familiar manner. His congenial nature was heartwarming and he seemed to have a sincere appreciation for other people simply because they were - well - people. This man was, simply stated, better than I. Oh, he was different; he had Down syndrome but as a human being, he was still better than I. He loved without reservation or condition; he did not judge others based on what they looked like or what they were wearing; he understood the gift of human touch and kindness and was ready to share this gift with everyone he could. He was not the least bit self-conscious much less self-absorbed. There was no guile in this man. He was far closer to innocence than those of us who are "normal."

What Is Normal? (Down's Syndrome)

A tale of the grotesque in this thread by wagglebee... How is it different in other than messiness than the old Samuri method of stabbing oneself in the gut? Well,it is les brave and less painful.

Lovelle Svart woke up Friday knowing it was the day she would die.

There was much to do. Her family and closest friends would be gathering at 11 a.m. in her mother's apartment in the Southwest Portland assisted-living center where they both lived.

She directed trips to the grocery store and even called AAA to jump-start the dead battery of her 2006 Scion. She double-checked delivery of food platters from Fred Meyer: turkey sandwiches, strawberries and grapes, pretzels, almonds and sparkling water. There would be pink roses on the dining table and a boombox in the corner to play music, including the polka tunes she loved.

Lovelle made one last trip to "the bridge," a wooden footbridge in a nearby park where she had found quiet sanctuary the past few weeks as painful cancerous tumors spread from her lungs through her chest and her throat.

The consummate planner, she had choreographed the day. She wanted to leave time -- five or so hours -- for storytelling, polka dancing and private goodbyes. And at 4 p.m., she intended to drink a fatal dose of medication, allowed by Oregon law, that would end her life.

She chose it all on the day she died (Euthanasia)

Important thoughts for today in another thread by Salvation. This is the twenty fourth of a series...

IN ALL things consider the end; how you shall stand before the strict Judge from Whom nothing is hidden and Who will pronounce judgment in all justice, accepting neither bribes nor excuses. And you, miserable and wretched sinner, who fear even the countenance of an angry man, what answer will you make to the God Who knows all your sins? Why do you not provide for yourself against the day of judgment when no man can be excused or defended by another because each will have enough to do to answer for himself? In this life your work is profitable, your tears acceptable, your sighs audible, your sorrow satisfying and purifying................

By the way, Dr. Michael Baden said there was NO WAY the woman detained at the airport could have strangled herself with handcuffs. He said more than likely the cops at the airport pressed down on her back or diaphragm when they were cuffing her which causes death during handcuffing.

It will be interesting to see if Arizona does coverups like the State of Florida or if they will do a real investigation.

The woman was yelling "I'm not a terrorist". No, she wasn't but she's gone and Bin Laden, the terrorist is still living it up in a cave and making videotapes.

Terri's in the news every day. Imagine if she were alive, she'd be in the news with reportage of her progress.

Fl Guv Crist had a press conference today! He was shaken but not stirred. It seemed to me that someone from the Florida GOP had taken him to the woodshed. He praised all the republican leadership for all of their hard work and for their brains. I believe those are likely the republicans who took Charlie to the woodshed.

It was a watershed moment that CC came to the realization that hanging out with Brad Pitt, Arnold and w/Bill Clinton re: global warming doesn't help Floridians one bit with their insurance and property taxes.
