There is probably no city in America where women are treated worse than in Las Vegas.
The tone of systematic, institutionalized degradation is set by the mayor, Oscar Goodman, who told me in an interview that the city would reap tremendous benefits if a series of magnificent brothels could be established to cater to johns from across the country and around the world.
Ive said there should be the beginning of a discussion of that, said Mr. Goodman, a former defense lawyer for mobsters who unabashedly describes his city as an adult playground where anything goes as long as you dont go over the line.
Most of the lines in Vegas have long since been erased. It is without a doubt, as the psychologist and researcher Melissa Farley, says, the epicenter of North American prostitution and sex trafficking.
Vegas is a place where women and girls by the tens of thousands are chewed up by the vast and astonishingly open sex trade. You can be sitting at a traffic light and a huge mobile billboard will drive past, promising, Hot Babes Direct to Your Room.
I was drawn to this story by an advance copy of Ms. Farleys book-length report, Prostitution and Trafficking in Nevada: Making the Connections. Its being published online today.

Oh, God, only from the NYT. Barf bucket please. I wonder how the article might read if it was....
*** WOMEN ARE TREATED BADLY IN ISLAMIC COUNTRIES ***
Oh, I forgot. The NYT supports the behavior of Islam...
As a guy, I’m treated badly in Las Vegas, they keep taking all my money.
The only city where Prostitution is legal and they’re surprised at the lack of respect for women. Isn’t there a joke about a Hooker in an elevator that berates the wife of a guy who turned her down?
men or women can defend it to the cows come home, but porn and strippers and prostitution are enslaving women around the world...
As long as you’re not a hypocrite about it.
“Maybe the sexual revolution has not served women too well.”
In our quest to find victims, we designate that prostitutes, regardless of circumstance are victims. It is just as likely that the man is a victim in this arrangement.
However, I see it as a transaction in which both parties are victims of their own accord.
“... See, I told you what $50 would get you.”
Sounds like you're not putting up much of a fight.
;-)
I remember when Las Vegas was sin city, then for a decade or so they marketed themselves as family friendly, now they are back to being Sin City and proud of it.
Yeah, “family friendly” didn’t work out too well. OTOH, “Circus Circus” seems nice...
Well, there were prostitutes before the sexual revolution. But after it, normal women got to be treated like and act like and dress like prostitutes.
(Pssst...hey, New York Times...”What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”.)
I read that somewhere ;^)
As long as the woman is not held there against her will, I agree with you. I may not approve, but consenting adults should be able to do what they want with each other sexually.
About all we do is force it undergound where Johns can abuse women to the max. We waste resources and manpower over this, and for what, to penalize the women? To make them work in terrible conditions? To subjugate them to abusive Johns?
Prostitution has been around as long a history has been recorded. It will be around as long as this earth exists. I’m not going to frequent the places, but lay off the demonizing of it already. Legalize it, regulate it and help keep the places clean and as free as possible from health related issue.
My Sister-in-Law was a personal trainer for the performers in Vegas. Some of her clients worked in the various “Cirque du Soleil” acts. She enjoyed her work very much, and loved living in Vegas [she recently passed away :’-( ]
If you are seeking legal prostitution in Nevada, you must drive at least sixty miles out of Las Vegas to find one of the state licensed brothels in Nye County. The town of Pahrump, located 62 miles east of the city along route 160, is home to the Chicken Ranch and Sherris Ranch, two state licensed houses of prostitution. If you drive north on route 95 you will eventually pass near the Cherry Patch Ranch, Mabels Ranch, the Cottontail Ranch and a few other ranches featuring legal prostitution. There are several dozen more ranches in northern Nevada near Carson City and Reno.
I didn’t write that!
Women by the thousands are being Shanghai'd and shipped to Las Vegas. These women are forced to work in all kinds of degrading jobs against their will... and take money as their only remuneration.
Oh.... the humanity! Not in my America.
Well, that’s a surprise!
I can’t get Diet Coke in any Vegas restaurant. Clearly, I am being discriminated against and dehumanized.
>> men or women can defend it to the cows come home, but porn and strippers and prostitution are enslaving women around the world...
I cannot speak to prostitution ... but I fail to see how voluntarily removing your clothes for tips, or voluntarily participating in pornographic endeavors qualifies as “enslavement”.

If you think Diet Coke is hard, try getting a Dr. Pepper. The west coast is a Pepsi kinda place.
We also enjoy Reno. More of a "buttoned-down" atmosphere than its glitzy sister city.
Why search for Dr. Pepper when you can buy antifreeze by the gallon at any store?
Does this mean the author is willing to take a stand against legalized porn, stripping & prostitution?
Or does he just want to keep it “safe, legal and rare?”
A son of my parent’s friends is a major Elvis impersonator in Vegas. Believe me, the girls are not forced.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Probably, porn and strippers and prostitution are enslaving a lot of men too.
I don’t know the joke about the hooker in the elevator.
(BTW, love your tagline)
What about a woman’s ‘Right To Choose’?

Las Vegas is a cesspool of vice, a city built on every sin imaginable. Do women think they'll fare well there? They're nothing more than a commidity, just like the rubberized crab legs and the boot leather buffets.
I hate everything about Las Vegas.
But I recognize everyone’s right to go there and be abused in whatever manner they see fit.
Only half as caustic as your reply. ;)
I guess when a man gets lucky with the dice in Vegas, women have the given right to let him get lucky with some vice at a price. More simply, as for him to share his winnings as they ‘share’ one another.
I’ve never been able to handle Dr. Pepper. Finding out that it and antifreeze share an ingredient was a bonus. :)
It would sort of make sense. When you lose your money you're inclined to turn to religion.
Regardless, I love Vegas. For a single guy like me there is no place quite like it.
;>P
Vegas is in two Counties. Clark and Washoe.
A couple go to Las Vegas for a few days. One afternoon the wife decides to have her hair done. The husband, with time to kill, decides he would like to try one of those high priced call girls he has heard so much about. So he goes to the bar and sees a good looking gal at the end of the bar. He goes up to her and says are you available and she says for a price what have you got? He says I was thinking of $50 The gal says 50 bucks thats outrageous get lost I am a classy gal. You should see the kind of gal you get for $50 in this town. The husband, humiliated, goes back to the casino and plays poker until the wife arrives. On the way up to their room, the elevator stops at a floor and who gets in but the hooker from the bar. The husband is beside himself. As the door closes and elevator starts moving the hooker nudges the husband and whispers in his ear see, pointing to the guys wife, thats what you get for 50 bucks in this town.
#3 right on!!
Imagine the heartfelt terror of one of NYT’s catamites spending his time in heterosexual LV...
