Women are treated badly in Las Vegas
New York Times ^ | September 4, 2007 | Bob Herbert

Posted on 09/04/2007 12:33:20 PM PDT by reaganaut1

There is probably no city in America where women are treated worse than in Las Vegas.

The tone of systematic, institutionalized degradation is set by the mayor, Oscar Goodman, who told me in an interview that the city would reap “tremendous” benefits if a series of “magnificent brothels” could be established to cater to johns from across the country and around the world.

“I’ve said there should be the beginning of a discussion of that,” said Mr. Goodman, a former defense lawyer for mobsters who unabashedly describes his city as an adult playground where “anything goes — as long as you don’t go over the line.”

Most of the lines in Vegas have long since been erased. It is without a doubt, as the psychologist and researcher Melissa Farley, says, “the epicenter of North American prostitution and sex trafficking.”

Vegas is a place where women and girls by the tens of thousands are chewed up by the vast and astonishingly open sex trade. You can be sitting at a traffic light and a huge mobile billboard will drive past, promising, “Hot Babes — Direct to Your Room.”

I was drawn to this story by an advance copy of Ms. Farley’s book-length report, “Prostitution and Trafficking in Nevada: Making the Connections.” It’s being published online today.

The only city where Prostitution is legal and they’re surprised at the lack of respect for women. Isn’t there a joke about a Hooker in an elevator that berates the wife of a guy who turned her down?

“Maybe the sexual revolution has not served women too well.”

In our quest to find victims, we designate that prostitutes, regardless of circumstance are victims. It is just as likely that the man is a victim in this arrangement.

However, I see it as a transaction in which both parties are victims of their own accord.

I remember when Las Vegas was sin city, then for a decade or so they marketed themselves as family friendly, now they are back to being Sin City and proud of it.

Well, there were prostitutes before the sexual revolution. But after it, normal women got to be treated like and act like and dress like prostitutes.

As long as the woman is not held there against her will, I agree with you. I may not approve, but consenting adults should be able to do what they want with each other sexually.

About all we do is force it undergound where Johns can abuse women to the max. We waste resources and manpower over this, and for what, to penalize the women? To make them work in terrible conditions? To subjugate them to abusive Johns?

Prostitution has been around as long a history has been recorded. It will be around as long as this earth exists. I’m not going to frequent the places, but lay off the demonizing of it already. Legalize it, regulate it and help keep the places clean and as free as possible from health related issue.

Actually, prostitution is illegal in Clark County, which Las Vegas is in. Here's where it is legal:

If you are seeking legal prostitution in Nevada, you must drive at least sixty miles out of Las Vegas to find one of the state licensed brothels in Nye County. The town of Pahrump, located 62 miles east of the city along route 160, is home to the Chicken Ranch and Sherri’s Ranch, two state licensed houses of prostitution. If you drive north on route 95 you will eventually pass near the Cherry Patch Ranch, Mabel’s Ranch, the Cottontail Ranch and a few other “ranches” featuring legal prostitution. There are several dozen more “ranches” in northern Nevada near Carson City and Reno.

Herbert forgot to mention the worst part of the whole story...

Women by the thousands are being Shanghai'd and shipped to Las Vegas. These women are forced to work in all kinds of degrading jobs against their will... and take money as their only remuneration.

Oh.... the humanity! Not in my America.

Vegas was my favorite place to go TDY before I retired from the Air Force. That is a wonderful place to visit...I believe Bob is going off of the fliers that litter the strip, you have to be pretty desperate to call those numbers. If I had my way I would outlaw them also. Mr Herbert needs to spend a few weeks in Vegas and he will change his tune.

I cannot speak to prostitution ... but I fail to see how voluntarily removing your clothes for tips, or voluntarily participating in pornographic endeavors qualifies as “enslavement”.

We also enjoy Reno. More of a "buttoned-down" atmosphere than its glitzy sister city.

As long as they are not forced and are doing it of their own free will, I have to say I don't care. Adults of normal mental capacity must be free to make their own bad decisions, regardless of what I or some NYT columnist think about those decisions.

I guess when a man gets lucky with the dice in Vegas, women have the given right to let him get lucky with some vice at a price. More simply, as for him to share his winnings as they ‘share’ one another.

I think I read somewhere that Vegas actually has more churches per capita than any other major city in America. I don't if that actually includes all those wedding "chapels".

It would sort of make sense. When you lose your money you're inclined to turn to religion.

Regardless, I love Vegas. For a single guy like me there is no place quite like it.

I believe the joke you are referring to goes something like this:

A couple go to Las Vegas for a few days. One afternoon the wife decides to have her hair done. The husband, with time to kill, decides he would like to try one of those high priced call girls he has heard so much about. So he goes to the bar and sees a good looking gal at the end of the bar. He goes up to her and says are you available and she says for a price what have you got? He says I was thinking of $50 The gal says 50 bucks thats outrageous get lost I am a classy gal. You should see the kind of gal you get for $50 in this town. The husband, humiliated, goes back to the casino and plays poker until the wife arrives. On the way up to their room, the elevator stops at a floor and who gets in but the hooker from the bar. The husband is beside himself. As the door closes and elevator starts moving the hooker nudges the husband and whispers in his ear see, pointing to the guys wife, thats what you get for 50 bucks in this town.
