Dog fighting is definitely practiced in the ME, not sure if it's common in all the countries there. Dogs are generally regarded as filthy vermin in the ME; there are wild dogs there, and barely domesticated dogs are tolerated as guard dogs and fighting dogs. Dogs are tortured for sport. It's pretty bad. I avoid gaining more knowlege about it because the little I know causes me such distress.

My son-in-law, who is from Pakistan, is reluctant to stay at our house because we have two small dogs. He thinks dogs are dirty. He won't tell me this, but my daughter says that's what he thinks. Ironically, my granddaughter, their little girl, is absolutely NUTS about the dogs and LOVES to visit our house because of them. She follows 'em all over the house and totally wears 'em out. They sleep all day after she leaves. She and my daughter visit, but the son-in-law mostly stays away because of the dogs.

I just can’t agree. Child abuse and neglect is more common than dog fighting in the same thug/ghetto culture—is that okay? Fourteen and fifteen year old girls having babies is more common in that culture than dog fighting—does that get a pass? If something becomes okay simply because it is common, I may as well be pro-abortion, but I’m not. There are standards to which right-thinking folks adhere to, and I have no problem stating that those same standards should be held precious by all.

I hadn’t realized that Ms Goldberg was an expert on Southern culture. It certainly wasn’t in the white South of my birth.
Doesn’t she realized she’s stereotyped a whole segment of the population - the black population in the South - as people who enjoy a cruel and degrading sport.

That was, quite possibly, the most complete and succinct statement I have read so far on this entire matter. It seems that everyone has forgotten what Vick and his cronies did to these dogs outside the dogfighting ring. That is the real crime. Thank you for writing that fine piece!

I don't like dog fighting...it doesn't rile me like many here but I don't like it. Hanging them and torturing them does anger me. The sign of a sadist. Dog fighting is not precisely a Southern thing either....I never saw it growing up...never.

cockfighting never bothered me...seen plenty around the world...I just can't get worked up over chickens.
