Presidential hopeful Bill Richardson on Saturday said a portion of college loans should be forgiven if graduates complete a year of national service.
The New Mexico governor plans to unveil the specifics of his education plan in Portsmouth in a few weeks, but gave a preview during a house party in a Londonderry backyard.
"As part of your college loan structure — in other words we'll pay them off, if you give your country one year of national service: work in a forest, clean up a forest ... work in a hospital, go in the military, go in the Peace Corps, go in Vista," ...
Richardson has proposed a national minimum wage for teachers, a complete repeal of President Bush's No Child Left Behind policy and massive investment in schools.
A spokeswoman for fellow Democrat John Edwards said he is working to expand access as well.

“National service” sounds (purposely) vague. I can only imagine the rubbish that will pass for “national service” in exchange for free college tuition.

“National service” is the Democrats’ euphemism for free campaign workers.
And you’d only have to work ONE year to pay off 2 or 3 years of debt? I had to work 5 years as a teacher back in the 60’s to repay 2 years of govt student loans.
Don’t worry kid, we’ll get sucker Republicans to go along with the program, most of them got their ‘learning’ from us.
the GI bill was passed years ago....but today...rotc is not allowed on campuses...
the only national service acceptable is the military...otherwise tell them to pay....

The irony is that the availability of student loans seems to be one of the main factors driving inflation in college costs.
Mark Levin had an excellent rant about the socialist teaching, NEA-union controlled public schools earlier this evening.
Believe me, it won’t be free.
It’s not irony. It is basic human economics. A person, company or industry will continue to raise prices until it meets resistance. No resistance, no cease of increasing prices. You would do it, your lawyer would do it to you.
They already offer this for service in the Peace Corps, National Guard, and what have you. Does this include the Park Service now, too?
Whatever it is, maybe he should realize that this already exists.
