After Jerry Lewis apologized for making an anti-gay slur during his MDA Telethon on Monday, GLAAD issued the following statement to TMZ: "GLAAD thanks Jerry Lewis for his swift and direct apology for this incident. We join millions of Americans in applauding the important work of the Muscular Dystrophy Association and wish MDA and Mr. Lewis much continued success in their efforts."
Alleged comedian Jerry Lewis has issued a statement to CNN, following the public outcry over his use of a gay slur on this weekend's MDA Telethon: "During the 21-1/2-hour live broadcast of my Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association this weekend, I made a joking comment to a member of my production team. I apologize to anyone who was offended. I obviously made a bad choice of words. Everyone who knows me understands that I hold no prejudices in this regard. In the family atmosphere of the Telethon, I forget that not everyone knows me that well. That something like this would distract from the true purpose of the Telethon pains me deeply. The success of the show and all the good that will come from it shouldn't be lost because of one unfortunate word. I accept responsibility for what I said. There are no excuses. I am sorry."

well, their reason for existing is to uncover any defamation of gay / lesbian / trans-whatever peoples.
So they picked up on an offhand remark by an old man in the 18th marathon hour of a telethon and jumped all over it, and pulled their professional outrage routine.
What the hell did he say?
He'd supposedly called someone on the air "illiterate fag" or something similar during his "telethon".

At the beginning of summer, I cut down some bushes in front of my house. I bundled all of the branches into 6 or 7 rolls and set them to dry for for a few months, knowing that the dried evergreen would smell nice burning in the fall. I recently ‘test burned’ 2 bundles.
Co-worker says, “Joe, what’d you do this weekend?”
Me: “Burned some fags in the backyard.”

I can't imagine why any straight person would be possessed to make an anti-gay slur. They personify decorum and restraint, lest someone be offended by their public behavior.
Unfortunately he never apologized for some venomous comment he made about Newt Gingrich a few years ago - and I no longer donate to his telethon.....
That's unusual. Usually they complain that an apology isnt enough and that the offender must be fired from whatever job he is holding and banished from society.
