COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Giant killer Appalachian State has won a following in Buckeyes country, where some Ohio State fans are gleeful over the humiliation suffered by archrival Michigan.

The then-No. 5 Wolverines 34-32 loss to the lower-division Mountaineers Saturday has sparked demand for Appalachian State gear among Ohio State diehards.

I don’t know. However, I read that App St is on future schedules or Virginia Tech, Georgia and LSU.

No, this weekend they are playing Akron, who has not beaten the OSU’s in 100 years. The play patsies in the preseason....

I’ve never understood that kind of schadenfreude for a rival in one’s own conference. Doesn’t that just make a Buckeye victory over them meaningless? Worse yet, if the Buckeyes lose to them, does that mean they’re more pathetic than the team that lost to a 1-AA team?

Not exactly. They do play a lot of pattsies, including some in-state teams they play in order to keep the gate revenue in-state. They also play one national power per year in the preseason. USC and U of Miami are coming up in home and home series. Just finished a home and home vs. Texas. Washington away, in a couple of weeks, will be a tough matchup for a young Buckeye team.

Well, not exactly. I give Florida all the credit in the world; they had a superb team and played really well. My Buckeyes were a shell of their former selves and, in hindsight, overachieved in even getting to that game.

Well I noticed that OSU dropped a couple of spots in the poll even though they won 38-6. I’m sure the Michigan loss is the reason why. That’s the funny thing with the BCS, fans actually have to root for their arch-rival when they play out of conference games to boost their BCS ratings. But lets face it. Everyone loves an upset.

Schools like Florida and Georgia for example for whatever reason won't play outside the southeast. For example Georgia has not played a regular sesason game outside the southeast since 1966. I doubt Florida would agree to a home-and-home series outside the southeast.

Will Ohio State dare play Florida. Oh, that’s right. They did.

Ohio State didn't bother to show up. They'd spent the previous six weeks reading their press clippings and thought they could mail it in. One of the oldest stories in sports.

FWIW, that game was one more great argument for a playoff. Ditch the bowls and the holiday hoopla surrounding them. Take eight teams: six major conference champions and two more from the best of the rest. No runners-up -- ya gotta win your league to play. Give 'em one week off after the regular season and then go. Everybody else under the sun manages to produce a legitimate champion. Division I football needs to get with it.

Yeah — I don’t know who to root for in the Michigan-Oregon game. I feel really sorry for the Wolverines and don’t want to see them lose a second straight game — but I don’t want the Pac-10 to look bad by having the Ducks lose to them.

Maybe. There's a ton of hype surronding UW's new QB Jake Locker, but from what I remember of the research I did before the season, UW's secondary is young. Their next four games include (in this order): Boise State, Ohio State, @ UCLA, USC.

Next year, Georgia is playing at Tempe,Az Sept 20. This year, they played Oklahoma State. In 06 they played Colorado. 05, Boise State.

Glancing at the OSU schedule, it appears that they also average about one out of region game a year.

The play patsies in the preseason....

Huh? They play University of Washington in 2007, at University of Texas in 2006 (# 2 at the time), home against University of Texas (#2 at the time), Univ of Washington in 2004 and Washington State in 2002. Plus they start a home and home series with USC next year and University of Miami in 2010 and 2011. I could go on with Virginia Tech, University of California and Oklahoma, but you should get the point by now.

Actually what you observe as "patsies", is a continuation of a policy started about 10-12 years ago of playing one Ohio team each season as a chance to promote their programs, teams like Bowling Green, Toledo, Univ. Cincinnati. Prior to that, OSU rarely played in-state schools.

At times they have had 2 Ohio teams on the schedule and this year is an odd one with three. The third team, Youngstown State was added this year with the recently expanded season and was a tribute to coach Tressel's previous coaching spot. Tressel had led YSU to several national championships during his stint there.

As an aside, just got a phone call from my son a few minutes ago. He just made the band again and is now a three year member of The Ohio State University Marching Band. Go Bucks!

Here in Columbus, the reaction has been mixed really. I always root for Michigan (and every other Big Ten team for that matter) to beat every opponent except the Buckeyes. And that’s because losses like the ones inflicted on Michigan and Minnesota last Saturday reflect poorly on the Big Ten.

At the same time, I understand the Buckeye fans who relished the Wolverines loss last Saturday...the rivalry is just that intense.

By the way, I want Michigan to keep Lloyd Carr. We in Columbus love the guy. :)

Don't know if anyone posted this yet, but the following is a letter from a shell shocked Michigan fan which was posted on Columbus radio station website:

"I can't believe it, I have not recovered from it, I will never recover from it. This one will stay with me like a limp for the rest of my life.

They finally did it. This is the biggie. This is Hudson's Building implosion, the Hindenberg, and George Bush 41 puking on the prime minister of Japan all rolled into one. Michigan is now the butt of the joke. The punchline. For all eternity. You can replace the "agony of defeat" ski jumper wipe-out with the footage of that final field goal attempt being blocked by the Appalachian State player's knee cap. Ralph Sampson just sent a thank-you note to Lloyd Carr for replacing the University of Virginia basketball loss to Division II Chaminade as the biggest gag job in the history of college athletics.

"The bubble burst. The balloon popped. The end is here. Michigan fans have been living off of Michigan State's back to back losses to Central Michigan for two decades. Not anymore. It's all gone now. There is no redemption. The season is over. Spare me the "If they run the table, they can still get in a BCS bowl game." The only table this team can run is at Old Country Buffet. I had a feeling an 8-4 regular season was on its way, I just didn't know one of the losses would be to the State College of Beauty.

"What's sad is the Michigan apologists like Bob Wojnowski still will not admit that the game has passed Lloyd Carr by. It's so obvious that Wojnowksi is just a vulture waiting for Carr to retire so that he can co-write his memoirs like that weasel Mitch Albom did for Bo Schembechler. Wojo can't criticize Carr because he's afraid to make him angry and lose the future book deal. NEWS FLASH: THE GAME HAS NOT PASSED LLOYD CARR BY, IT HAS LAPPED HIM TWICE AND IS RIGHT BACK IN HIS REVIEW VIEW MIRROR WITH ITS BLINKER ON. It is self evident. Anyone who denies that is an idiot and immediately loses all credibility on any opinion related to sports for the rest of their life. It's done. Get it? The argument is over. He cannot coach. He is incompetent. He stinks. There are High School JV coaches with more ability than him.

"I spent Saturday afternoon canoeing the Huron River with my family. I wouldn't have watched the game even if Comcast and the Big Ten Network had worked out a deal. I had no idea what was going on until by Dad called me on my cell phone and asked me if I heard what happened. By the tone of his voice I knew what he meant. "Did they lose?" I asked. "Not yet, but they're going to," he replied. I almost dropped my phone in the river.

"Before I even watched the highlights and the interviews on the news Saturday night, I knew I was going to hear the obligatory "We'll find out what this team is made of now." No we won't. We already know what they are made of. It's a group of poorly coached, under-achieving, lazy, cocky choke artists. I am sick of that smug smile on Chad Henne's face after he completes a pass. HEY LOSER! TRY WINNING A BIG GAME! THEN YOU CAN SMILE! YOUR ARE SUPPOSED TO COMPLETE PASSES, YOU JERK! The next big time play in a big game Henne makes will be his first.

"There are two kinds of Michigan football fans. There are the deluded faithful that think Michigan is the elite program in college football, pointing to the fact that Michigan is the all-time winningest program and clinging to it like a life preserver. That's nice for them, but all those wins in 1887 and '03 against Michigan Normal College and Pennsylvania Anatomy School don't really do it for me. Unfortunately, the vast majority fall into that category. Then there is the group to which I belong. The pessimists. We enjoy the wins, but realize they are only a brief respite in chain of devastating losses that, like chinese water torture, come at unpredictable intervals and inflict irreversible psychological damage, until we snap, lose all touch with reality, and curl up in a corner and hum "The Victors" to ourselves for the rest of our lives.

"I think back to New Year's Day, 1998, when I stood in the bleachers of the Rose Bowl with my father in the fading light of a beautiful a Southern California winter afternoon. The Michigan band played in joyous celebration. Time was frozen in a moment that felt like it would last forever, and we basked in the glory of the greatest win in both of our lifetimes. And I realize now it's an illusion, a mirage, fool's gold.

On the bright side, my next eleven Saturday afternoons just became free. Anyone got a tee time?"

Thanks for that letter. I’ve never really like Lloyd Carr. He kinda seems to come across as a jerk. I remember the 2003 OSU-UM game and at halftime when sideline reporter for ABC asked him some basic questions about the first half and he was really rude.
