Oprah's Couch For Obama Only
The Washington Post ^ | 9/5/07 | Matthew Mosk

Posted on 09/06/2007 9:09:50 AM PDT by Texas2step

Oprah Winfrey may be getting behind Barack Obama's presidential campaign with vigor this year -- she'll raise $3 million for him when she holds a fundraiser at her California estate on Saturday.

It means she'll be wading into the political world as never before. In 2000, she had Al Gore and George Bush for guest appearances. And California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has dropped by her couch....

..........................................

This year, she says, Obama will be the lone presidential candidate to grace her studio. "If everybody knows I'm for Barack it would be really disingenuous of me to be sitting up there interviewing other people as though... pretending to be objective. So I won't be doing anybody because of that, on my show."

This is from the blog section of the Washington Post...I thought you might be interested in seeing what some of the readers comments were, as well...

One person who commented wrote: Oprah has done more for average Americans than any politician alive.

Millions of Americans will accept Oprah's recommendation because he has no reason to mislead or lie to Americans. She's not seeking any favors from Obama.

She tells it as it is. Her endorsement of Obama is as genuine as her words.

Kinda scary, if you ask me...

Well, at least she’s being honest. Of course, this is a woman who repeatedly told her audience that “..the pursuit of happiness” was in the Constitution, so what does she know about government?

Her argument is phony. She had Bush on, and I don’t think anyone thought she’d be voting for Bush. No, she’s just being a racist; she’s only giving air time to the black candidate.

More poster comments from the Post's blog:

the woman has great taste and knows a real president when she sees one.

If Oprah supports Obama, then l am for Obama. she has helped more people than any politicians l have seen. she has done more for peolpe all around the world and she is a woman of truth, brains, good values, genuinely cares for people and want to help and change the world for the better. so, if she says obama is the right person for the job, l believe her.

it is only an equal time violation when the libs get less time than the conservatives!

anybody who watches oprah has only 1/2 brain and is probably already voting liberal, so i don’t think the other candidates will be crying their hearts out (except maybe edwards...)

I don’t think she’s being honest at all. She had Bush and Gore on in 2000, and I don’t think anyone thought she was in Bush’s camp, or thought that it was “phony” of her to have Bush on and be civil with him. That’s what a TV host is supposed to do, be a genial host to people of different backgrounds and beliefs. If she has the Dalai Lama on, that doesn’t mean she has to pretend to be a Buddhist.

But she probably would. :-) From what I've seen, she frequently (if not usually) empathizes with the positions of her guests. Now, I haven't watched much, but I've seen her be as "Christian" as could be one day with a Christian guest and completely sympathize/empathize with someone who is a Scientologist or Muslim, the very next day.

She very much tries to be "all things to all people" IMHO.

She’s just admitted the power of “air time”. When the press cover the dem candidates (especially Hillary!) more than any other candidate, they deny they’re giving campaign support.

We know how the MSM operates... it’s just very interesting when they admit it...

I disagree. There’s a difference between having a political preference, as we all do and actively campaigning for someone. In 2000, she wasn’t actively campaigning for anyone and, while she may not have supported Bush, she was very gracious to him. (I wish he had been candid about his DUI in that interview. The election wouldn’t have been as close as it was.) When she is clearly and actively involved in a campaign, it is a different story. I applaud her for being upfront about it. Over all, though, I prefer the Dr. Phil approach. He considers it an abuse of his status to push his own political/religious/social agenda.

I was raised in the infamous town of Durham, NC, which has a very large, sometimes militant, black community.

When growing up, I would look with amazement at the precinct-by-precinct elections results. The precincts -- because they reflected neighborhood housing patterns -- were almost entirely segregated.

The "Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People" used to hand out "voter guides" at black precincts, a trick later learned by the Christian Coalition.

It was a thing of wonder to see those precinct results in the black precincts which would invariably be along the lines of 146 to 2; 210 to 3; 114 to 1, etc. When black candidates started to get elected, you would see the vote reasonably split in the white precincts but always, always nearly unanious in the black precincts.

Jesse Helms referred to this voting behavior as "the block vote," which, of course, was evidence of his racism [sarcasm].

Okay for black people to do racial politics. When white people do it, it is racism. When white people ~notice~ it, it's racism.

I'm noticing Oparah's prejudice. Guess that makes me a racist.

Isn’t this an equal-time violation?

Another answer, from the Magic Touch article linked previously...

Winfrey's show is not subject to any "equal time" obligations, because Federal Communications Commission rules do not apply to news programs, interview shows and documentaries in which the candidate is not the sole focus.

That would apply to EVERY news outlet and TV show available...I always knew that "equal time" was an empty law, but didn't realize that it's almost a LINO (Law In Name Only)...

Interesting...

Why anyone would support a Muslim for President of this country fries my mind. How soon we forget. There are just some things Oprah is not terribly smart about. Politics is at the top of the list. But not to worry. He isn't electable. There isn't one shred of qualifying qualities within him. He's a nerd. IMHO of course.

PS: I love it that Freepspellcheck doesn't know from Barack or Obama.

But Ophra isn't a member of the press. She's an entertainer. Hmmm...like Rush. That means Rush and Hannity can have all of them on their radio talk shows as often as they want and it's just entertainment.

P.S. Will Hillary! feel snubbed? She IS married to the First Black President, after all.

Well he does have that name recognition going for him. Obama, sounds like a crazed, infamous muslim named OSama.

And his other name Hussein, which is the same name as an infamous dictator/murderer.

So as a Democrat, he has the name recognition their party loves!
