Rainbows End?
I haven’t been reading much lately, so I can’t comment on any of these. I have had a copy of Dozois’ “The Year’s Best Science Fiction”, 23rd edition, for a couple of months now still unopened.
If you have NEVER seen any of the Dr Who or only the old Dr and not this new one... I HIGHLY recommend this episode.
Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form: Doctor Who - Girl in the Fireplace (2006)
It is my all time FAVORITE DR WHO of all the shows ever. A “10”, flawless, and a well deserved award !
I’ve *never* seen Dr. Who, old or new. Is it on DVD?
The only Vinge I’ve read is “A Fire Upon The Deep” and I found it so so. Has anybody read “Rainbow’s End”?
I liked that Dr. Who epi. Usually, it’s so pc that I don’t watch more than two minutes of it.
Hubby and I just finished watching the 2-parter that finished up last night (hurray DVRs) - the one that takes place at the boys’ school just before WWI. We were trying to decide if the “killing is wrong, so just give yourself over to the bad guys” meme says anything about the mainstream UK sensibilities, or just the show’s writers (not unlike how Hollywood doesn’t speak for everyone in the States). I suspect it is the latter.
Didn't think much of her acting, and the chemistry just wasn't there, so maybe they worked it out.
It has mixed reviews, but I think I’ll get the paperback when it’s available. I’ve read most of his stuff, and it’s very good.
Unfortunately it isn’t part of the series including A Fire upon the Deep or A Deepness in the Sky, but seems to be a cyberpunk novel based on his earlier story, Fast Times at Fairmont High.
The second half of the 2 parter was the best one so far with the current Dr. The ending with the boy changing his “fate” and seeing the Dr. years dwon the road were incredible. I think this is the best espisode the current Dr. has done. Give Martha a break. Shes just new. It took me a while to really get into Rose. Keep an eye out for Torchwood which is a Dr. Who spinoff.
The girl in the frielplace was a great episode!
I really enjoyed the growth in Rose's character arc... a tart who turned out to have some substance after all.
Martha Jones... maybe she'll be a substantive character who'll prove to be a tart?? (JK) I love the show, I find it charming and wildly creative - something that can't be said for much American Scifi.
Torchwood has been on the DVR queue for a week already - can't wait for tonite! Captn Jack was a wonderful character; the segments of him in the game show with Mecha-Trinny and Mecha-Susanna was hilarious! Torchwood better live up to that.
I love the Sci-fi Channel for keeping Sci-Fi alive but I wish they would just kill of some shows. Stargate, SG Atlantis, Flash Gordon. What I don’t like about Sci-Fi channel is that they keep bringing back the same actors to different shows. Some from Farscape ended up in Stargate, some from the Old Stargate show up in the new SG Atlantis. Flash Gordon I am not too impresed by so far. The best show right now is Battlestar Galactica. Even thought they have these liberal themes sometimes trying to “fly under the radar” it is a good show. Torchwood may be good. I’m glad to see that the character is American. He was great in the two episodes I saw him show up in Dr. Who.
My fave under the radar show was Dresden. Cancelled, dontchaknow.
Ping.
Wow. Just wow. I thought Jim Baen was a shoo-in for editor because... you know... he died.
they all pale in comparison to Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, H. Beam Piper or Frederic Brown. Hell! They pale...
PERIOD!
Call me an old fashioned snob...
but I'll be double dipped in flatcat poop before I am going to pay $8.99 for a new sci-fi paperback I'll not enjoy when I can reread the Gold Age Sci-Fi Classics from my local half-price book store for from 50 cents to $3.
BTW in the 10 cent bin I found 14 paperbacks for this coming week, one is Asimov's The Martian Way which I haven't read in probably 15 years!
I love to grab those old sci fi books, but (sob) there is no 10 cent bin at our half-price book store.
However, since those oldies were sometimes $2.95 and $3.95, they are still a bargain.
I read it a few months ago. I rate it as O.K., somewhat disappointing, considering what I've heard.
It's a story of an unfolding conspiracy going on as the world is at the cusp of the birthing of the singularity, or super-artificial intelligence. The characters and plot line in the book are hokey and juvenile in my opinion.
If you lived in any other state other than Texas...
one might say drop by The Bookstack, Corsicana's half-priced book store at 1427 West 2nd...
But since you are from God's Country, I recall way back when my late great Old Pappy was Project Manager on building some missile bases outside El Paso in 1958, there was a missing shipment of needed items. They were finally located in Texarkana.
Dad called the Chicago supplier and was told, "Hey, they are only in Texarkana, why don't you send a man over to pick them up..."
My Dad roared back, "Why don't you send a fella down to pick them up in Texarkana, you idiot! You're closer!"
So, if you are in the North Central Texas area...
drop around to The Bookstack.
BTW for the Map-Challagened, the distance from El Paso to Texarkana is 795 miles. Chicago to Texarkana is 705 miles
I really enjoyed Charles Stross’s “Accelerando” on the same topic.
Try to locate “Maps in The Mirror” by Orson Scott Card. Its a collection of his short Sci-Fi stories and are great for those who want a quick Sci-Fi fix. One of the best is a story called “Kingsmeat”.

With all the super-computers superseding each other over and over again, I have the unsettling fear...
I may look up one day and see...
without any fuss, the stars going out...
Is it a gay tragedy?
We liked both Vernor Vinge’s “Fire Upon the Deep” and “A Deepness in the Sky”. I’d like to read “Rainbow’s End”
ping
Eureka is a great show but that Henry guy got a little creepy this year.
No the gay tragedy is "Rainbow's Rear-End."
Um, what’s with the statue of a lizard man standing next to a “marital aid”?
Very artistically made, but dang, so depressingly sad and violent.
Yes. You can get the whole set for about $800.00...
The only Vinge Ive read is A Fire Upon The Deep and I found it so so. Has anybody read Rainbows End?
Yes. Worth reading. It's not a space opera like "Fire" or "Deepness in the Sky" (prequel, sort of, to FUTD. This is also one you should read.).
Is that the newest one? No matter, they’re always a good read. If you can’t find at least half a dozen really good stories in one of those anthologies, you just don’t like sci-fi. My only regret is that I don’t buy and read more full-length novels by some of those writers, who have a ton of good ideas - a short story is not always sufficient to fully explore a good concept.
Agreed on the latest 2-parter (”The Family Blood” was it called?) I thought it was really good, as you say the best of the episodes with the 2nd new Dr. Who. Martha’s starting to grow on me, too, although I miss Rose. I thought this season’s “Gridlock” was pretty good, too.
I've been wanting to get back to the novels, but got caught up first with re-reading LOTR (40 years later) and then (30 years later) Donaldson's, um, indescribable Covenant trilogies (I'm almost to the finish line, hurray!), while waiting for the latest of SF-turned-fantasy writer George R.R. Martin's latest fantasy series. Then I'll be back to novels, whether new or revisiting my library downstairs.
Although I did get Red/Green/Blue Mars into the midst of this. (Not sure I cared for some of that, though.)
I thought "A Deepness in The Sky" was much better than "A Fire Upon the Deep" - but I haven't read "Rainbow's End" yet.
