I laughed. (click to see comic)
Well, there goes half the readership :-)
That’s great!
Surprising, though. You’d think the cartoonist would be a lib, based on his bio:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darby_Conley
Yeah, but he still has the half that can read. :oD
I have no idea what the cartoonist’s politics are, but “Get Fuzzy’s” cat, Bucky, snarks on liberals just about every week. LOL
Must be an Osama fan...
Whatever political affiliations aside, “Get Fuzzy” is one of the most consistently funny strips out there. I definitely rank it up there with “Dilbert” and “The Far Side.”
The New York Daily News puts it on page 3 of the comics, which is a good spot). Front page is ad space, page 2 is Prince Valiant (a must-read since the News started carrying it) and Opus (a must-puke since the News started carrying it).
The other highlights are Rose is Rose, One Big Happy, Girls and Sports (uneven, but with a grain of truth to it), the Family Circus (yeah, I shoulda grown outa that 'bout 20-30 years ago) and the Kakuro puzzle. Everything else is usually hit or miss (like Hagar) or just bad.
The original link goes to the daily main page instead of the archive link for 9/9/07.
Oh, right away I thought it a lib cartoon. Far left.
He’s hitting on the Dems for not having the spine to stop the war.
Good political humor is clever, not just consisting of insults. This is the kind of thing that liberals do.
Great strip.
Has anyone else noticed the commercial for the new season for HouseMD? Someone asks House where he came from? His reply, “Well, if you are a Democrat you think that I came from apes”.
"Tax my tuna and give it some drugs."
A couple weeks ago, one of the dogs said something like “spending money like a Democrat at a Gay atheist bake sale”!
Or maybe, he is hitting on the demoncraps for not having a spine to fight the war.
“Must be an Osama fan...”
Do you mean Obama? I still get the two confused.
L0L!
Slugus Democratus

My alltime favorite is when Bucky gets busted with the whiskey bottle. ‘And then he took my catnip!’
I’m going to remember that one for the next time I offend a liberal: “Oh really? Why don’t you tax my lunch to buy drugs for the homeless, then you’ll feel better.”
I was reading the comics yesterday and I laughed out loud when I saw Get Fuzzy. It’s quite an accurate description.
That's funny I have read the exact same comments as in the comic about Republicans right here at this very site.
Priceless!
And oh, so true.
Conley may be a lib that uses Bucky to character assassinate non liberals.
I'm not seeing this the same way others here do. I see the same ol' leftist crap with the same message that is subtext in anything and everything Hollywood does. It's just a bit more subtle this time.
Bucky says things we'd like to say, this is true. In context, though, Conley's message is exactly the opposite. The cat Bucky is not a nice character at all. He is selfish and hateful and cruel. Just take look at the way Bucky is drawn, with big bugged-out eyes and his hair standing on end. This is Conley's idea of a Republican (or anyone who doesn't buy into Socialist utopia) - someone who is stark-raving insane.
In Get Fuzzy the dog is the 'nice guy', the cat is mean and heartless. Bucky would injure or kill the dog if the human in the household did not constantly interfere - he has tried it many times.
The intended message here, delivered in a typically Hollywood deceptive way, is not a zing to the Dem/socialists. It is a message about what kind of people are NOT Dem supporters. Make no mistake, when Conley is ascribing your ideas to Bucky he is insulting you.
This reminds me of Archie Bunker. When Archie Bunker spoke, the producer's intended message was not 'here is the truth', the message was 'here is the voice of ignorance'. Having viewed Get Fuzzy over time it is clear to me that Bucky is not cast as the voice of truth, or reason, or goodness, or logic. Bucky is the voice of nastyness, selfishness, and hatred.
Thus the subtextual message ... once again, as ALWAYS for the lib-media-preaching crowd ... is that "nasty people are Republicans". The same old stuff. Furthermore, nice people (like the dog) are sick of hearing it.
Same with the "House" character mentioned above. He is portrayed as a mean, angry, hypocritical, drug-addicted doctor. The character is not intended to rouse feelings of sympathy or identity in the audience. His co-workers don't like him and we aren't supposed to like him either. He doesn't shave or wear clean clothes and he most likely does not bathe, either. Having one's views ascribed to this character is an intenional insult. This is not a spokesperson we wish to embrace. The message in the cited promo spot, again, is that 'a--holes are Republicans'.
This is kinda like being a manufacturer of skin cream and finding a billboard featuring Jabba The Hutt endorsing your product ... it's NOT a good thing.
I know a bunch of you want to tell me to lighten up, stop digging so deep, and just be entertained. I submit to you this thought: Conley's tactics here are exactly the same that we use when we portray Osama Bin Ladin as a Hillary supporter.
Suppose that you log in to FR and see a graphic of OBL carrying a 'Hillary For President' sign. That's not hard to imagine, is it? What is the meaning? Do we hope someone will see this and be moved to vote for The Hildabeast? Of course not. The real meaning is not to validate the text of the sign, but just the opposite. The choice of spokesperson is designed to invalidate the "Hillary for President" message. Do we want the audience supposed to just "lighten up" and not think too deeply? I don't think so.
When I read that Get Fuzzy strip I am at first amused by the text, but I know I am being insulted and that doesn't sit well. It's the same ol, same ol, prepackaged Hollywood message again: they deliver the message that 'Republicans are evil' by casting only their evil characters as conservatives.
The only difference here is that in this case the leftist author (check the bio link given to us by FReeper LibFreeOrDie - Conley: boston-based elementary school teacher, animal rights activist, vegetarian) has a better idea of how to spoof the things a sorta 'mean right-wing bas**rd' might say.
Often we can spot such tactics easily because the leftist author has so little idea what a conservative says or thinks that the end product is just blatantly silly. It is unusual for a lefty to be able to suspend their own viewpoint enough to write an effective parody. Conley is a bit more clever, a bit more able to think outside his own box, and so has done a better-than-usual job of insulting us.
Clearly.
That’s my kind of Cat.
Nicely done.
Why, thank you - but our roles should be reversed. I should have been first to compliment you.
At the exact same time I was practicing my verborreha you said the exact same thing with only seven words. Much better. Well done.
You objectively looked at both sides (Hillary reference), and examined the psychology involved, important for a full understanding.
My favorite was when Robert made Bucky fight a chicken. :-)
W&W,
I agree that Conley is taking pot shots at ‘Pubs with regards to Bucky, but it is a damn funny strip. Bucky is just like Rat in Pearls Before Swine.
MSM dishes the stuff out - dishes endlessly on Republicans, but they can't take it when it's their turn. Ever see a conservative strip in your local paper?
Conley's got to be careful or he'll be drawing for the Beach Bee with a circulation of 5,000...
